May 31, 2017 - It was like going to Church

We left Colorado to drive to South Dakota. We spent the night along the way in Wyoming. In Wyoming, we saw a children's home in operation. I have not seen one of those is quite a while. I wonder if this home was used when the Catholic church took the Native American Children off the reservation and put them into these schools. Now to South Dakota. I have always wanted to see Mount Rushmore. We were definitely going to see it but there is so much more to see and experience. The first trip out was to the East where we went to the Minute Man...

Jun 15, 2016 - Tornados, Presidents & Indians

Well the actual order I guess, is presidents, tornados & Indians. Let's start first with the drive to Keystone which is another total tourist town. We did have a great lunch at Ruby's though. Then we kept going to MT Rushmore. I'm glad we saw it, but I have to admit it was less than I anticipated. CW felt the same. Side note the Grandview Terrace was built (donated) by the previously mentioned Homestake Minning Co. George Hearst. Just as we we ready to leave it started to sprinkle. BUT, by the time we were part way home it was pouring. Then...

Jun 13, 2016 - Hermosa S. Dakota

It's been a few days since we've talked. So today's chat is likely to be a bit longer. Thursday CW & I hung out at the RV park using the pool etc. A storm rolled in at night with thunder & lightning. It is always windy, not breezy, but windy. The only time it isn't is when there's a storm coming. Then it is a dead calm. Friday we went to the town of Deadwood. Gold was discovered in 1875 & by 1876 it was a town. That August, Wild Bill Hickok was shot in the back of the head by Jack McCall at Saloon #10,so named as it was built on gold claim...

Oct 3, 2013 - Heartland RV Park , Hermosa, SD

Wednesday, August 28 --Sunday, September 29--Heartland RV Park , Hermosa, SD We came back to Hermosa, SD after leaving West Yellowstone, to stay for a month to enjoy the Black Hills area, we love this area and there is lots to do. The first half of the month was in the low 80's and the last half was in the low 70's and cool at night--- just right for us. We decided to stay for the Buffalo Round-up at the end of September which is when they round up some 1300 buffalo into corrals for sorting and branding. They choose some of them to sell to...

2013 NORTH WEST TRIP

Sep 24, 2013 - OTRA - SD - Hermosa

9/24/13 Back down I-90 and U.S. 79 we went once again, this time to Hermosa, SD. It was a nice short trip down from Sturgis on a clear day. Left around 11:00 and got to the Heartland RV Park & Campground about 20 miles south of Rapid City about 1 ½ hours later. The campground is right close to highway so we’re going to get truck noise but with either the air conditioner or the heater running, we don’t hear too much. There’s also train tracks on the other side of the highway but since we both like trains, that won’t be a bother either,...

Aug 15, 2013 - Heartland RV Park, Hermosa, SD

Wednesday, July10 --Friday, August 16--Heartland RV Park RV, Hermosa, SD We stayed here over a month to visit the Black Hills, Custer State Park, and many other places in the area. It was a very pleasant stay--the temperatures were mostly in the low 80's although we got some rain about every day or at night. The rain usually was short in time and dried off quickly. The first day we got to the park we had a hail storm with hail over 1/2" in diameter and that was a little scary. It sounded like bombs exploding on the roof of the motor home....

2013 NORTH WEST TRIP

Jun 15, 2013 - Hermosa, SD (Rapid City)

Jun 7, 2013 - June 7th Friday

Another day in the West. Today we went to Mt Rushmore. The trip there was quite scenic. Steep twisting mountain roads. Lots of wildlife Devin claimed he saw 3 turkeys. The entrance and parking were a little confusing, but soon we were parked and on the way to the base of the mountain. We stopped and let the kids fill out a small booklet with many questions about the park and what it was about. Both completed their tasks and earned junior ranger medals. We did a little walking while we were there. The visit lasted over 4 hours. Later we went...

Yellowstone 2013

Jun 6, 2013 - June 6th

Big day today! We woke about 8 Mountain time. Devin and I rode our bikes to the local Ace hardware in Wall to get a set screw to repair a clothes rack in the bedroom. He did really well riding that far. The service at the store was exceptional considering we were only getting a 60 cent set screw. We repaired the clothes rack, ate breakfast, then prepared to move on. We fill the diesel tank before getting on the Interstate. We were on our way to Custer State park, south of Rapid City when the wind shield chip sent out a couple of cracks...

Yellowstone 2013

Aug 28, 2012 - The Badlands of South Dakota

The South Dakota Badlands, August 20-21 After getting over Frank’s Birthday, we had to get back on the road and we made it to the Western part of South Dakota, the part most people outside of the state know, the Badlands and the Black Hills, home of Mount Rushmore. Again, South Dakota has made what seems to be a great effort to attract people to live in the state by marketing the beauty of this part of the world and supporting the creation of Mt. Rushmore. But there was so much here, we decided to divide this visit into two sections. This...

Went to church at The First Baptist Church of Rapid City. Met a nice couple across from us from Georgia. Jim and Linda Mumpower. They were at church. Went home and had pulled barbecue children sandwiches for lunch. Spent a lazy day. Got the laundry done. Will have to get out early in the morning to get the trailer over to be worked on.

Don't wake me up

Aug 17, 2012 - Another Great Drive

Back to the black Hills to drive some of the road we didn't make yesterday. We started out going up what they call Needles Hwy. I think it is called that because there so so many pine trees. The elevation is above 7000 ft. You could see forever at some of the places. There are 6 one lane tunnels on the route. One of them we went thought was only 8ft 4 inches wide. We barely fit thought. Wish we could have gotten a picture of that. There were people parked outside the tunnel watching, I don't think they thought we were going to make it....
