Jun 24, 2018 - Fort Thompson SD - Lake Sharpe - Left Tailrace COE Campground

We’re at the fishing grounds and we are finding fish. Only problem is that they are too small. We’ve landed a lot of walleye, but only 4 were big enough to keep. Here’s hoping the fishing will be better next week at West Pollack. Meanwhile, we’re taking the weekend off. This stop hasn’t been a bad one, though. We met a lot of new people and enjoyed talking to them and sharing our experiences. One couple is on their way to Alaska. They have quite an adventure ahead of them. They have a 7 month old puppy (he’s some breed of sheep dog) and...

Aug 20, 2017 - Big Bend Dam - South Dakota

. Hazel and I left Minnesota last week, heading for St. Paul, Nebraska to see the Eclipse. The first night was a stay in the Marshall, Minnesota Walmart, then on to the Indian Casino in Flandreau, South Dakota. On the way, we had an unscheduled stop at a tire shop in Pipestone, when a rear inside tire suddenly popped up on my Tire Minder system as going to just 35 pounds of pressure. . I was shocked when I saw the two back tires on that side, one completely destroyed, the other well on the way. "You hit something and broke the cords", the...

Jul 27, 2017 - Fort Thompson SD - Lake Sharpe - Left Tailrace COE Campground

We came back to Fort Thompson to finish catching our fish and found the heat. It was in the upper 90’s and low 100’s almost every day. Fort Thompson is in central South Dakota and we noticed that eastern South Dakota (e.g., Brookings, Watertown, Sioux Falls) was about 15 to 20 degrees cooler every day. Don’t know how they got so lucky. Anyway, we were successful in our fishing and our freezer is now full of walleye to get us through the winter in Arizona.

Jun 27, 2017 - Fort Thompson SD - Lake Sharpe - Left Tailrace COE Campground

Finally got our chance to wet a few worms and catch some walleye. This trip, it turned out that Lake Francis Case was the place to be. We caught 12 fish while at Fort Thompson – 10 on Lake Francis Case and 2 on Lake Sharpe. I took the first go-round of our annual fishing tournament catching the most keepers (8) and the largest (18 inches). Roger probably caught more fish than I did, but his weren’t big enough. In June, the minimum length walleye you can keep on these lakes is 15 inches. We both had our share of 14 ½ inch fish that had to be...

Jul 23, 2016 - Fort Thompson SD - Lake Sharpe - Left Tailrace COE Campground

THANK YOU, SOUTH DAKOTA!!! Decided we couldn’t go home without some fish, so we changed our itinerary and went back to Fort Thompson SD. We figured if we could find any fish, it would be at Lake Sharpe. We arrived in the midst of the excessive heat that hit the Dakotas, Minnesota, etc. So, we came north and got a taste of the heat we try to avoid by leaving Arizona every summer. We arrived at Fort Thompson to a temperature of 105 degrees (feels like temperature was 111). I checked and Buckeye was only 102 that day. Go figure! 𯘩 The...

Jun 5, 2016 - Fort Thompson SD – Lake Sharpe – Left Tailrace COE Campground

Finally, a spot to go fishing for walleye! Our first day out, we got 6 keepers! Well, Rog got 4 (his limit) and I got 2. For a while, I was at least ahead on total fish count, but I think Rog ended up beating me in that category, too. We had walleye for dinner that night. Mmmmm, mmmmm, good! Took a day trip into Pierre to pick up mail, tires for the boat trailer, etc. Turns out that’s about the only day the wind wasn’t blowing. Some days, the swells on the lakes were pretty good sized. I had all my GOOD luck fishing that very first day. I...

May 25, 2014 - Fort Thompson SD - Left Tailrace Campground, Corps of Engineers

Arrived in South Dakota for some fishing on May 15th and will leave Memorial Day. Came to one of our favorite Corps of Engineers campgrounds and got a great site with views of the lake and lots of room to maneuver. It took us a bit longer to get our limit of walleye this year than it did last year, but we got the job done. The fish are in the freezer just waiting to be eaten. Having gotten that done, we ended up with a couple of days to relax and enjoy. The weather is warming up nicely, but the wind blows every day. That wouldn't be bad...

Sep 1, 2013 - A Healing Week

It was a calm, healing week. The temps hit 101 on Thursday so we just stayed in the rig. Ron is healing very well. We go for walks in the early morning or in the evening and read, play on the computers or nap the rest of the day. We have had a great week despite the heat and some pain in Ron's chest. When he fell, he landed on his breast bone and bruised it. They took x-rays and noting is broken but it is bruised. It will take quite a while to heal. Tuesday we went into Chamberlain again for the Dr. to look at his arm and hand. All is...

Summer 2013 Travels

Aug 26, 2013 - A calm week until SUNDAY!!

Thursday: Friday: Saturday: These were pretty routine days. We watched boats launch, watched them come in and Ron even went over to the fish cleaning station to see what they caught. It was windy and hot. Ran the AC in the afternoon and took a nap in the cool bedroom. Then came SUNDAY!! For once the wind wasn't blowing. So early in the morning, Ron decided to go fishing. There is a point across from us and he had talked to a lot of people who had been fishing from the bank there. They were catching their limit of walleyes and even some...

Aug 21, 2013 - Lake Francis Case

Sunday: A bit nicer morning with no fog today and a bit less wind. But the forecast is for it to be in the 90's for the next 3 days. Yuck!! with the humidity in the 80 and 90% range, it make for a sticky time. Oh, well, we aren't paying for electricity so we will just turn on the AC. Monday: Ron went into town for some more worms. His had croaked by being stored in the cooler. So I now have worms in my crisper drawer in the house fridge. YUCK!! He tried his luck, but no one is catching anything at this lake. We are hoping that the next...

Summer 2013 Travels

Jun 22, 2013 - Fort Thompson SD - Left Tailrace Campground, Corps of Engineers

Stopped in Fort Thompson to finish out our fishing trip. By now, we'd had fish for dinner several times and needed to replenish our supply to insure we had our allowed number of fish. We definitely have a freezer full of fish from walleyes to northern to bass to trout. We have a good cross section. Looks like Roger won the biggest fish category with his 29" northern. I squeaked out the biggest walleye at 22". (His biggest walleye was a mere 21".) For most fish caught, I started the trip out with a good sized lead, but Roger out-fished me...

May 29, 2013 - Fort Thompson SD - Left Tailrace Campground, Corps of Engineers

First day of fishing was great. We each got our limit of walleye!!! Yahoo. Also got the best campsite in the campground. We're right on the lake and can sit and watch the fishermen in their boats to see if they are catching anything. Two other campers want to move on to our site when we leave. It really is the best site.
