Jun 23, 2008 - A Hike Up Bear Butte

Just east of Sturgis lies Bear Butte National Monument. The visitor center calls Bear Butte “almost a volcano” – meaning it almost but never erupted. It stands as a high point in the area (4400 feet) and was a pioneer landmark. It was and still is considered sacred by the Native Americans, and there is one butt-kicker two-mile trail that takes to you to the top. We were lucky to have a calm, somewhat sunny day for our leisurely hike and took these pictures along the way.
