Jun 7, 2015 - BMW Factory Tour

Well, we managed to squeeze in one last tour before leaving Asheville.. a guided tour of the BMW factory near Spartanburg. We had tried to do this when we were in the area two years ago but the plant was closed to tool up for a new product. This plant produces all of BMW's SUV's - the X3, the X4, the X5, and the X6 with plans to build their newest model, the X7. Once completed, It it will be their largest assembly plant in the world and it's only factory in the U.S. employing 11,000 people. The plant builds 1300 SUV's a day with 70% of them...

This is a quick entry. Spartanburg was a stop to rest. We stayed at a really pretty campground called Croft State Park. It was quiet and beautiful. We had a pretty busy time in Charleston, so we decided to take a break and also break up the mileage to the Smokey Mountains. Which is our next stop.

South to Warmer

Apr 19, 2012 - Southwest Bound.

CUNNINGHAM RV PARK SPARTANBURG,SC THURSDAY 4/19/12 Got up to cloudy skies and cool temperatures this morning. It rained for a couple hours last night but the rain is all gone now. We didn't have to hurry this morning, in fact haven't hurried much on this trip. New mode of operation this year. We left the fairgrounds a little after 1000 and stopped at a filling station we had scoped out yesterday. Got in and out of there nicely and soon were on US 64 West, heading for Interstate 85 in the vicinity of Charlotte,NC. There was no place to...

Day 4, February 21/12, Tuesday Arrived for our tour of the Spartanburg BMW Assembly plant. It had been recommended by friends and certainly exceeded all expectations. For a guy who hadn't toured a modern assembly plant this was an eye opener and the tour and leader were both “first class”! There are many unique features about this plant that just astound you, too many to mention here. Shopped a bit on the way back to camp. Where the hell are these financially strapped Americans, the restaurants were full, the stores were busy – go...

Day 3, February, 20/12, Monday Woke to a very dull, misty, cold morning. The only blessing was the snow had stopped and the highway was bare, but wet. Headed south down the Cumberland river valley and through the Cumberland Gap on US 25, great road. After about an hour the sun broke through and you can't imagine the drastic change, temp climbed to 11 C the snow had disappeared and it was a really beautiful drive. Drove across Tennessee and continued south on I-40 into North Carolina and through the Smoky Mountains, an impressive drive! Left...

Apr 10, 2010 - Spartanburg, South Carolina

We left Hilton Head at noon and planned on staying overnight at Columbia SC at Camping World but their store was located on a big incline and we didn't fancy that so we continued another 80 miles or so to Spartenburg KOA where we will be staying for 5 nights. Spartenburg is where the coach chassis is produced and they have a 2 day "owner training" program that Graeme's going to participate it and then we have the coach booked it for a major service before we head out west for the next 12 months.

How quickly plans can change. Last evening we got a call that my aunt had passed away. This was not unexpected as she has been in failing health for some time. After a long drive today, we are in a small campground near Spartanburg, South Carolina. This has not been the uneventful day that we hope to have on any travel day. It actually started with last night’s thunderstorms in Nashville. The wind blew and the rains came and we got up this morning to a soaked carpet under the dining table. Of course, we did not have time to deal with wet...

Aug 13, 2008 - From 4 Paws to Camping World

After extending to a week at Four Paws, it was time to head home. We stopped at Camping World in Spartanburg to get the AC fixed, and of course the part had to be overnighted. So we "boondocked", meaning we set up in the parking lot and ran on our generator and own water supply. Fortunately, the part came in, was installed quickly and we were on our way!

Mar 21, 2008 - Spartanburg, SC

Our first stop in South Carolina was Spartanburg. I am moderately into my family genealogy and wanted to scout out a couple old cemeteries. My family settled for a short while in Spartanburg County as they migrated from Virginia and North Carolina to Tennessee. I still have an uncle, aunt, and several cousins living in the area. I got with my uncle and found one of the two cemeteries I was interested in. This tombstone is in the old family cemetery located on land that was once my great-great-great uncle’s plantation. It was pretty...
