Nov 7, 2012 - Santee SP in SC

Drove from Croatan NF to Santee SP (SC) through Myrtle Beach area, Georgetown and then NW. ROUGH roads on the RV in SC. Lakefront site with feral cats running the campground. Biked around park and saw the over water cabins available here---cool! Lovely fall colors throughout this trip. Yesterday to Congaree Nat'l. Park for a walk, then to Orangeburg shopping at WalMart, DDD lunch in Summerville (perfectly Frank's). Few rain drops yesterday. Cold at night, but decent during the day. Cleaning/biking/walking today and staying in campsite....

Jun 4, 2012 - And we're (sniffling) off

Got a late start yesterday as Shirley went back to bed after going to an urgent care center. He has a sinus virus and is feeling a little punk. We put in about 4 hours and pulled into Santee SC and the Santee State Park on Lake Marion. It was a beautiful day for a drive, sunny and in the mid 80's and off the interstate. We had thunderstorms overnight but looks like we will be able to get out without getting too wet. Heading for the Raleigh area today. Enjoy the pics.

Feb 27, 2012 - Liquid Sunshine

Oh my…I really think we’ve had enough liquid sunshine. I am carrying or wearing my L.L. Bean raincoat everywhere and thank goodness for my slip-on all-weather shoes! I keep reminding myself that the sky is still brilliant blue and the sun is still shining above that gray blanket in the sky. It hasn’t stopped us from enjoying ourselves, but we are a little wistful for the sunshine and warmth we enjoyed during last year’s winter trip. Next year I think we’ll go back to southern Florida where we enjoyed more settled weather and had a chance to...

Nov 27, 2011 - Jolly Acres Campground, St George, SC

One night in St George, SC at Jolly Acres Campground. Temperatures in 70's even at 6PM. Stayed here before. We were overjoyed to find that this campground like all the others this trip is located very close to a live railroad. It's fun to lie awake at night and listen to the rumble and the roar of a southbound freight train or an Amtrack blowing the horn for a crossing. I was hoping that the conductor would offer coffee while passing by.. however, NADA....

Jun 28, 2011 - Santee State Park

Hi everyone: Sorry for the lapse in coverage but we did not have any Internet service in our second stop. That will happen from time to time so don't get discouraged. We are still out there and will send Updates whenever we can. OK- After a night of rough storms at Lake McIntosh Campground we got up to a beautiful morning. The small lake was like a mirror and the fish were jumping all over the place. It was hard to keep the boys out of the water but the last thing we needed was three wet fur balls as we move on. Back on I-95, which I...

Sep 28, 2010 - Camping by Lake Marion, SC

The sun came out this morning and we had a pleasant ride to South Carolina. I decided to stay in a campground along the shores of Lake Francis Marion, part of the Santee-Cooper reservoir. I wish I had a fishing pole because you could see the bait fish jumping trying to get away from the stripers. Our next stop is Camping World in Pooler, Ga to get the refrigerator fixed. That's right last year this time I stopped at the same CW for the same repair. Deja vu all over again.

2010 Fall Trip South

Sep 7, 2010 - Travel to Santee, SC; Visit to Maurice's BBQ

September 7 – Travel to Santee, SC; Visit to Maurice’s BBQ We arrived a little later than planned in Santee, SC due to our tire change in Ashland, VA so we could not dine at Maurice’s BBQ at lunch AND dinner. We camped at a non-KOA campground to be able to be close to Maurice’s which, from a previous visit, has the best pork, hushpuppies and especially banana pudding. The food met our expectations as shown in the attached photos. : )

Nov 21, 2009 - Driving Ms Beverly

Back on the road again today.Headed for Santee Lake.Arrived at Santee Lake to find plenty of sites. The campground is backwards. You drive in on oneway dirt roads and the hookups for water&electric are on the wrong side.We decided to turn the bus around facing the wrong way,but putting things right. Also gave us a better view.Frank the camphost said we would might get in trouble.Nothing been said yet.Bev rode her bike down a two mile bike trail and came back with unwanted guest;TICKS.It might rain tonight and that will make this place a muddy...

Oct 17, 2009 - Boring at Big Water

You may recognize the campground, Big Water, from our visit here last year. We stopped here for a few days on our way back from Myrtle Beach and we spent a few days with Ray and Jeanie. It was cold and windy, so we said then we’d come back again when it was warmer. Well…we’re back and it’s still chilly, rainy, and windy. The first two days were pretty nice, but the weather went downhill from there. Consequently, we spent a lot of time indoors. Being retired, it shouldn’t surprise you that, at times, it gets a little boring. Big Water...

Sep 19, 2009 - A really bad day!!

Second day on the road was hopefully the worst, and maybe things will look up from here…I mean, can it REALLY get much worse………fridge won’t work, so we decided to go to the local Walmart and buy a small electric fridge to at least be able to have milk and a few other essentials that need refrigeration…. After getting directions from the locals, we head back down US 1 to Callahan, then over A1A, past our 95 turn, and keep going, and going,….trying to find this elusive W-mart. After driving at least 10 miles out of our way, we finally spotted...

Fall trip to DC

Sep 15, 2009 - St Augustine FL to Santee SC

Hi everyone. Well, we've been gone for 6 days now and still not far from home. We spent the first 4 days in St Augustine, FL - a mere 1 hour from home! We were at the first annual St Augustine Bike Festival. The first couple of days we spent riding our bikes around the town with some friends of ours that live in St Augustine. On Sunday we participated in the "Endless Summer Watermelon Ride. Up to this point the weather had been hot but nice. On Sunday it was cooler but rainy - what a day for a ride! But hey, we're on vacation so we did the...

Nov 20, 2008 - Lake Marion, SC

We arrived at the Big Water Campground, an ROD park on Lake Marion in Central South Carolina, on Sunday afternoon. On the way here, we received a call from Linda and Denny who left Myrtle Beach when we did. They were heading back to Ohio and were flagged down by a passing motorist who told them they had a flat tire. Well...crap! They went about 6 miles more and pulled over at a Flying J truck stop and indeed, the left rear tire on their Palisades fifth-wheel was flat. Luckily they have road-side assistance and were able to get someone to...
