Oct 18, 2017 - St george

We are at Jolly Acres, it's off the interstate at least 5 miles but we have a nice wide spot, pull thru, with satellite. At the interstate rest area we saw a motor home pulling a two tier trailer with a hydraulic lift for the two motor cycles on top and the car below. Quite a set up.

Feb 11, 2017 - Happy birthday, Molly!

It got down to 30 degrees Thursday night. Yesterday’s high was only 55, so we stayed home. Marilyn called and invited us to dinner tonight. She made us a delicious meal of roast pork, au gratin potatoes and vegetables. Janice and Larry came to dinner, too. Janice lived near Tom in Weston. She made a Boston cream cake for dessert. Janice’s sister Carole stopped by after dinner. We had a nice visit. Today is our last day here in St. George. I’ve finished up the jobs I wanted to get done around home. We are heading south to Florida tomorrow –...

Feb 9, 2017 - Still in Saint George, South Carolina

Wednesday, we drove down to Beaufort, South Carolina, about an hour and a half from here, to visit Tom’s brother Ray and his wife Marilyn. We spent the day with them. Tom, Ray Marilyn grew up in Weston, Massachusetts. There are a few other people who live in the neighborhood who are friends from Weston. A couple of them stopped by to say “hello” and reminisce. We had a nice visit. Aside from that, we have mostly stayed home. We went out to do a few errands and I scanned some magazine articles and saved them on a USB drive so that we can...

Feb 7, 2017 - The Audubon Sanctuary at Franice Beidler Forest in Harleyville, South Carolina

We plan for this to be a low-key week in St. George while we get unpacked, restocked and settled in. There are a number of things I need to get done in the motorhome, such as filing away stuff that came in the mail while we were away. We went to the grocery store yesterday to restock. In the afternoon, I worked on the five motorhome batteries, removing as much corrosion as I could and topping off the cells with water. After that, I checked the car battery and dropped the cover into the engine compartment, too far down to reach. While...

Feb 5, 2017 - Jolly Acres RV Park in St. George, South Carolina

We enjoyed a couple quiet, restful days visiting with my mother and stepfather in North Carolina. We read, played Rummy and watched a little television. Today, we made the four-hour drive back to our motorhome in St. George, South Carolina. It was a cool weekend in Brevard; it is warmer here in St. George. After sitting in storage for two months, the RV’s engine batteries were dead and the coach batteries weren’t strong enough to get it started. I tried jump-starting it with the car, and that didn’t work either. We borrowed a portable...

Dec 4, 2016 - Jolly Acres RV Park in St. George, South Carolina

We got to St. George, South Carolina, yesterday afternoon. We got the motorhome winterized this afternoon and packed for our trip across country. We have to do a load of laundry in the morning and load the car, then we will move the motorhome to the storage area here and be on our way west. It is noisy here at times. It isn’t traffic noise; it’s a rooster and occasionally dogs. We are on the edge of the campground. Our site backs up to a pasture where there are a couple beef cows grazing. Across the pasture there is a chicken coop and a...

Jan 9, 2016 - Audubon Center at Beidler Forest in Harleyville, South Carolina

Today was another cool, damp, cloudy day but we decided to get out and do some walking anyway. We went to the Audubon Center at Beidler Forest in the next town. There is a 1.75-mile boardwalk loop trail there. The trail goes out into Four Holes Swamp. It is the world’s largest remaining stand of virgin Bald Cypress-Tupelo Gum swamp. There are 1,800 acres of towering, thousand-year-old bald cypress trees. Bald cypress trees have knees. Cypress knees are cone-shaped growths on submerged roots. They stretch above the water most of the time....

Jan 8, 2016 - Back in St. George, South Carolina

Wednesday, we got back to our motorhome in Saint George, South Carolina. The refrigerator wasn’t cold, so I turned it another notch colder and threw out anything that might have spoiled. Luckily, there wasn’t much in it. By morning it was cold again. I’m not sure what the problem was. Maybe the campground lost electricity. Once it got warmed up on Thursday, I started up the RV, put the jacks down and the slides out. Everything worked in spite of the cold temperatures while we were away. We haven’t been doing much since we got back. We...

Dec 18, 2013 - South Carolina

1036 miles from home! We got a late start this morning as we gave both the Trek and the Jeep a good wash. It was so great that the RV Park allowed us to wash our rigs. It is a very rare park that allows it! We hit the road about 10:00 am and had a very enjoyable ride today. It was so relaxing, knowing we were out of the snow and ice. The roads were gorgeous! They even sound different as they are concrete here instead of asphalt. We are camped at a Comfort Inn tonight. They have a small RV park in back of the hotel. It is convenient to...

Sep 30, 2013 - Asheville

It's a beautiful crisp, sunny morning in South Carolina. What a difference from the hot, humid weather in Florida. We're about 3 hours out of Asheville. We drove until 10 p.m. last night and stayed at a rest area. The "Bus" didn't seem to want to stop. We put her in park and she just kept revving up! Mike and I looked at each other and cracked up. Decided we were ready for a cocktail and we would worry about it tomorrow. We both slept great and the "Bus" was ready to go when we were. Working on my second cup of coffee, listening to good...

Oct 6, 2010 - Sightseeing in Charleston while in South Carolina

On Wednesday, October 6 we headed east to St. George, South Carolina to a park we hadn’t stayed in before. We were a little leary about the campground, but as it turned out it was a really nice place, and since it was a Passport America park, it was relatively inexpensive. We would be here for 4 days, so we thought we’d have time to finish up washing and waxing the rig that we had started while we were at Lake Oconee. The weather cooperated and we were glad we finally got that chore completed. Now we were ready for the beach. It couldn’t be...

Nov 28, 2007 - Finally! Really on our way to Florida!

We're in Jolly Acres RV Campground in St. George, South Carolina today. This is a clean, neat small private campground about six miles off of I-95 and 45 minutes from Charleston. The owner is a little lady who appears to be in her 80's. Her daughter (granddaughter?) registered us at the camp when we arrived. As I registered yesterday afternoon, I noticed the delicious aroma of potatoes, carrots and cabbage - obviously being stewed with fatback - cooking in the campground office. Good Southern country cookin'. There must be men around to do...
