Mar 4, 2018 - Update on All that has Happened Since Last Journal

Contrary to rumors, we are still alive and well, back in Mebane NC. We just have been slack in not publishing an up-to-date blog entry, so here it goes: Christmas in Durham We decided to spend 2017 Christmas in Durham this year to be near Rick’s Mom who now lives in Cary. We bunked at son Bryan’s home, had Mom over to bake cookies, and then had a Christmas dinner with Bryan, Alison, and Noah, and son Ken and Trudie with Isaac and Darby. Granddaughter Alex was down with a bad cold. But Mom was Queen for the Day and she basked in all her...

Dec 14, 2017 - Thanksgiving and Christmas

Wow! Christmas is only two weeks from now – followed closely by 2018. 2018!? What? Wasn’t it just Y2K??? We are currently – for the fourth winter – in Myrtle Beach at the State Park. We are again “working”/volunteering at the Nature Center for the third time. Our annual Santa (and Mrs) Claus was “on the Beach” on December 2 & 3 for photos with kids of all ages – from a 3-week old baby to a 103-year young great-grandpa. We had nearly 1000 folks on our laps, about 100 dogs, and a too-big-for-my-lap potbelly pig. The weather was perfect –...

Feb 27, 2016 - Time to Move On

Well it is the end of February and time for us to leave Myrtle Beach State Park. We finished up our scheduled time for volunteering on Friday. Thursday was one of the new volunteer’s birthday so we celebrated with apple pie and ice cream. It was also a farewell to us. We have worked with some really nice people these past 4 months including rangers, interns and other volunteers. We are looking forward to coming back in November to once again volunteer at the Nature Center including being Santa and Mrs. Claus during December. Everything has...

Jan 30, 2016 - Is January Really Over?

It doesn’t seem possible that January has come – and gone! We’ll be here at Myrtle Beach State Park until the end of February. I’m sure the next 30 days will fly by. For those who we didn’t get to say it: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We had one of our best holiday seasons. Santa and Mrs. Claus got to have our great nephews, Chase and Tanner, on our laps and this year both of them climbed right on with no coaxing. Of course, we had a nice with visit with their Mom and Dad, Glen and Siri and with my brother, John and sister-in-law,...

Dec 11, 2015 - Merry Christmas

Hey, Y’all! Guess the last journal was from before Thanksgiving, so I’ll start there. We had a double-header! Dinner on Thursday with Betsy’s nephew Michael’s family here in Myrtle Beach followed by a (4 hour) trip to Raleigh on Friday to have dinner at son Bryan’s home. His family and we and were joined by son Ken and his family. Now that’s a loud crowd! We were especially thrilled to see grandson Isaac who flew in from Salem, Missouri, where he has been on an Americorp assignment buildimg a campground in one of the national parks. Let me...

Nov 23, 2015 - Happy Thanksgiving

We arrived at Myrtle Beach State Park on Nov 1. Our site had a fresh load of fill to prepare it for us after the flooding in early October (15 inches of rain). There were still areas of standing water around the perimeter of the site which the mosquitoes loved. On Monday morning we met with the lead ranger of the Nature Center for our orientation. In the afternoon it started to rain, rain, and rain for 3 more days. Our camper became an island surrounded by 6 inches of water. We had to make a run to Wal-Mart to buy rubber boots just so we...

May 12, 2015 - Myrtle Beach, SC

Myrtle Beach is a lovely beach area on the Atlantic Ocean. The mock orange was in bloom, and the aroma was so delightful that I insisted on leaving the windows rolled down, even in the heat of the day. While not as pristine as the Gulf beaches, the sand was sandy, the waves were wavy, the sun was sunny, and the ocean was salty. We spent several lovely days on what is known as the "Grand Strand." Larry picked up a nice sunburn, which browned up nicely after a few itchy days, and my tan is coming along nicely - (Thanks, Dad for my resilient...

Oct 25, 2009 - South Carolina

Weds. Oct 14 - Fri Oct 22 Myrtle Beach State Park We had a nice relaxing week. It rained all the way to the park and while we set up, and was rainy or cloudy everyday through Sat. There were a few breaks where we got to ride bikes and walk on the beach. Nice park and a great beach. Paul's big project was to set up the satellite dish. After the second day of trying, the neighbor felt sorry for him and brought over his signal tester and they finally got it up and running. We checked out Huntington Beach State Park. Nice park too, bigger,...

Jun 6, 2009 - Murrel's Inlet and Margaritaville

A lot of rain last night and there are a number of wet tenters around us. We had to move sites this morning but that's no big deal. On to our new site by 10:30 and then off to Murrel's Inlet just south of Myrtle Beach. No shopping involved, just lunch. Ate at Creek Ratz on a beautiful covered deck overlooking the water. Marilyn went for the deep fried oyster platter and I had a blackened grouper sandwich. We then headed over to one of the new complexes called Broadway on the Beach. It is a small town surrounding a man-made lake. Stores,...

Jun 5, 2009 - Myrtle Beach and the Carolina Opry

Had rain last night. No thunderstorms just rain. Spent some time in the office this morning as they have internet access. Met a couple from just east of Algonquin Park. They are traveling in an Aliner trailer. That's the one that tows flat and likes like a teepee when it's raised. They are like us in that they travel in the spring for a month (black fly season) and a month in the fall. Nice people. We then went to the Grand Coastal Mall as Marilyn wanted to check out Dillard's, a large upscale department store. Guess what she found? Another...

Jun 4, 2009 - Myrtle Beach

Very hot and humid this morning. Rode our bikes to the office and met Josh. We were checking to see if there was a site for Saturday. There was and there was a better site for the next 2 nights so we switched sites. Done by noon. We'll have to switch sites again Saturday morning but it's no big deal with the 5er. Much easier to hook up than the travel trailer. Headed to one of the Tanger Outlets to look for Marilyn's wedding dress. Success! She is ecstatic. Now she can relax and browse the other stores. Still looking but no pressure. By the...

Jun 3, 2009 - Problem Solved and on to Myrtle Beach

Work started on the cord just after 8:00 AM and I decided to have a cord connection put in the bed of the truck so this problem wouldn't happen again. This way you don't have a cord hanging over the tailgate. Got a quote and it was reasonable. The cord was finished by noon. Took longer than expected and we hooked up to try it out. Still no brakes. Oh! Oh! Checked out the controller. It was OK. After about an hour and phoning the brake controller manufacturer to get advice, phoning my dealer, Can Am RV in London, and phoning the fifth wheel...
