Jan 13, 2015 - Following the Coastal Highway

Not much to report today as we drove down US 17, the Coastal Highway. It runs 1,206 miles from Winchester, VA to Punta Gorda, FL. We picked it up in Norfolk, VA on Sunday and we'll be following it to Jacksonville, FL. Today we passed through Wilmington, NC, Myrtle Beach, SC, and Charleston, SC. We didn't stop in any. Wilmington looks like a pretty neat place to visit with the USS North Carolina and an interesting waterfront. It's worth a trip back sometime when the weather is better. Myrtle was pretty crowded for January. It's a lot like...

The Gypsy Whaylands

Dec 5, 2012 - Back on the road . . .

We left Wilmington this morning and traveled a little over 200 miles through the scenic coastal marshes and the much more densely populated Myrtle Beach area to our destination for the night - Lake Aire RV Park in Hollywood, SC. We can't really recommend this one. We had active railroad tracks next door and are near one of the flight paths for an airport - quite a departure from some of the very quiet campgrounds we have been in recently! We stopped at a Camping World store in Myrtle to pick up a few essentials.

Oct 25, 2010 - The Old South, part 2

Another warm day although overcast most of the day. The rain held off until we were on our way back to the rig, though. We are now enjoying a thunderstorm, though it is supposed to be over by tomorrow. Into Charleston (or, as we were instructed by one of the locals, Chaaaston) SC today. Started looking for Ft. Sumter, but at the end of the road which seemed to lead to it on the map, discovered it was in the bay and we would have to catch a ferry in another part of the city to get there. Well, we tried. I guess ignorance is not really an...

Oct 24, 2010 - The Old South

The weather has been cooperating well with a beautiful sunny and warm fall day yesterday as we drove to the Charleston, SC area, and then today with sunshine and temperature in the high 70s (as high as Linda ever wants it to go)! We decided that it was time to see what we had always read about concerning the "deep south," and spent most of the day visiting the Magnolia Plantation Gardens and adjacent Audubon Swamp Garden. This plantation was established in 1676 when the newly married Draytons were gifted with the 2000 acres by the bride's...

Apr 20, 2007 - No Fancy Title

Still from Lake Aire RV Park, Hollywood, SC Rain drops kept falling on our head during the night, at least onto the roof of the bus.....a heavy sprinkle at most, but it made for a nice lullaby. We were concerned enough about what the rain might do that we went out & stored the patio chairs in the cargo bay before we went to bed, but the look-back today told us that that had been unnecessary. The rain was just enough to settle some of the dust; there definitely was not any problem with mud today. Rick, our tour guide yesterday, had told us...

Apr 18, 2007 - Never Too Old to Learn

Our third night at Lake Aire RV Resort, Hollywood, SC, just west of Charleston. P. S. to last night....I had difficulty loading the photo of the Sweet Grass Baskets, but have now been successful. Check back to last night's entry for that photo. If the old saying that "you are never too old to stop learning" is true (& I believe it is), then I have my made efforts today & yesterday to stay young. Yesterday I learned an additional fact about towing the Jeep. I had continued to have a problem of the odometer clicking miles while being towed. I...

Apr 17, 2007 - Rainbow Row

From Lake Aire RV Park, in Hollywood, SC, just west of Charleston. Granted, it is often the small & novel things that I encounter that are most entertaining; so it was with the drawbridge that we crossed over each time as we came & went at Skidaway Island. We encountered it a couple of times where we caught just the tail end of the traffic back-up from it having been in the open position. But, finally, as we approached yesterday to make our final crossing, we were about ten vehicles back. As we approached, we were early enough in the...
