Oct 15, 2016 - Carolina Landing in Fair Play, South Carolina

We continued south on I-85 today through North and South Carolina. The stretch of road south of Greensboro NC is new to us. We got a late start. I slept later than usual and then spent quite a while trying to find a place to spend tonight. There are five campgrounds along I-85 between Greenville, South Carolina, and the Georgia border. I wanted to stop just south of Greenville but the first four campgrounds didn’t have sites available. I wasn’t sure how to get out of the campground this morning and didn’t take the best route. Our site was...

Our 2016 Travels

Oct 7, 2016 - Anderson, S.C.

It's a good thing we wanted to stay inland for this period of our travels, as the coastal cities are being inundated by the effects of Hurricane Matthew! Our being inland about 200 miles gives us only a little rain and some breezes, so far. As I write this, we just started to get alittle rain, it's Friday early afternoon. Our drive yesterday was pretty easy considering it was pretty much straight south from Mt. Airy, N.C. to Fairplay, which is near Anderson, S.C. We aren't on a schedule for this stay, so we'll get a lot of reading done...

Apr 17, 2016 - Fair Play, South Carolina

The very easy 205 mile drive from our last stop in North Carolina to this place near Fair Play, South Carolina was a nice one that day. This is another of the Thousand Trails preserves, one of our favorites. The next day after landing here, we packed the four of us and Bambi into our pick up and went to spend the day in the little town of Helen, Georgia. It's up in the hills of NW Georgia. A very popular vacation and touring town with a Bavarian theme. Longtime readers of this journal know Rebecca and I have been here before, but our...

Dec 12, 2015 - The Lake

Friday morning we all slept in, then got the car packed for a drive to their lake house in South Carolina. We had been here with them before also so it was fun to reconnect with their neighbors as we gathered in the driveway for drinks. Then it was off to the pizza place for dinner two friends and grand children. The 3 grandchildren were delightful and so very polite and well behaved. The pizza was delicious. And so again a great evening. From there we went to Denny and Donna 's house for an after dinner drink. It was a new house for them,...

Oct 31, 2013 - TTN Carolina Landing, Fair Play, SC

Photo's to follow Our drive of 235 miles due East from Snead, AL toward Atlanta, GA then up I-85 to Fair Play was a terrific day for us. Starting on Hwy 278 this drive through the countryside is awe-inspiring this time of the year. We passed numerous little farms, some had stately manor homes and we passed by many little shacks with autos up on cinder blocks! This park, though a little dumpy, is one of our favorites due to it's location on Lake Hartwell. There are several exciting things to do and see in this area. So stay tuned and check...

Nov 3, 2012 - A Short Visit in South Carolina

After one night on the road north of Knoxville, we arrived at the Thousand Trails Carolina Landing campground in Fair Play, SC on Sunday, August 12. We had only planned on one night here, but Don had a doctor’s appointment in Gainesville, GA so we changed our plans to stay for 3 nights. On Tuesday we drove about 60 miles to Gainesville and since we were then so close to the kids, we drove back to Cleveland for a quick visit with both of them. Our family doctor is also in Cleveland and I was really feeling bad, so I decided to make an...

May 29, 2012 - Norwestern South Carolina

From Unadilla, GA, we headed north and a little east toward Fair Play, SC. One of the reasons I don't like the Interstate System in the South is that you're frequently driving in a green tunnel. And those tall pine trees along the interstate call for really tall billboards. We were in Georgia as Georgia peaches, Vidalia onions and the most wonderful cantaloupes were being harvested. Roadside veggie stands were everywhere and we managed to stop for some goodies. After Macon, we were off the Interstate and it was better. We passed a huge tree...

May 29, 2012 - TTN Carolina Landing

We drove only 110 miles from Pointes West Army resort to Fair Play, SC and the Thousand Trails Carolina Landing Resort. The rain fell on us from start to finish, sometimes it fell very hard giving us some caution while we’re driving and slowing us down to 30 mph for safety. There was a time when we pulled into a large fuel station, notice we said “fuel station” not “gas station” as we don’t use gas, for refuge from pounding rain. We found our perfect spot in the 30 amp area. It’s high on a hill in the trees. We’ve determined while here to...

May 7, 2012 - new flat panel TV

Since Larry and Pat did such a wonderful job on installing the flat panel TV, I thought that I would post a few more pictures. They took the old TV out and then put a door on the old TV cabinet and installed the flat panel TV on the door. This gave me a huge amount of extra storage. Larry finally found some folding support braces for the door so I don't have to hold the door open with one hand while trying to put stuff in with the other hand. We are still in SC and planning our trip to eastern Canada this summer. The weather has been hot...

Apr 28, 2012 - RV Remodel finished

Well we finally have the RV remodeled and as promised here are the pictures. We got the old beige carpet taken out and a jade green textured carpet installed. The gold fabric captain's and co-pilot's chairs were reupholstered in white ulta leather. The valances used to be maroon and gold and are now white ultra leather and the same fabric as on the new dining chairs. Where the old gold sofa was is now a credenza and table. Where the dinette was is now a map table and 2 recliners. We took the old dinette table and turned it sideways to make...

Feb 20, 2012 - Fair Play, SC

The forecast rains finally started on Saturday evening and continued off and on through the night. It was still lightly raining on Sunday morning. I was a little concerned, because the roads in the campground are all dirt, but we had no problems getting out to the highway. For two hours, we drove in the rain, over good, but curvy highways and seemed to wander all over the mountains of Northern Georgia. When we got to the Thousand Trails campground near Fair Play, SC, we found what could be the hilliest campground we've ever visited. The...

Aug 14, 2011 - Lazy Day

Aug 14 Today was a lazy day, after all the driving around yesterday I needed a rest! So, today I cleaned the rig and removed at least a ton of cat hair!! I also decided to seal the sink area, I had been getting water under the sink—I thought it was from spilling as I was washing dishes. So I sealed it up with a clear sealer and was really proud of myself; then it rained…there was water on the counter. Window? No the window was dry, I checked under the sink, and yes wet again. WTF. I started looking around and found a couple of drips of...
