May 11, 2018 - Dillon, SC

Fri, 11 May: A long day on the road... Today we put on some miles. As a rule we don't care to drive much over 200 miles in a day. Today was an exception as the weather and road conditions were good and we do have to put miles behind us during the next few days. We were up around 0645 and had a hasty breakfast. We went thru our checklists and Bob rolled wheels at 0830. It was a quick mile to the interstate entrance and we were soon rolling northward on I 95. Just south of the South Carolina border we changed drivers and Sandi continued...

2018 Travels

Oct 7, 2017 - South of the Border

It's starting to get warm down here, it was 17c when we got up! A dense fog lifted fairly quickly, and we were on our way. Of course it wasn't long before Mike had to pull over for a pee. He has excuses but most likely it just that he's old. Today was a 'get some miles behind us' day and being a Saturday, it was a good day to travel. The roads were smooth and for the most part clear and uncrowded. At the North Carolina Welcome Center, when Michelle ran in to get a map, the gentleman said that they do most of their construction at night, so...

May 2, 2017 - Little Pee Dee State Park (4/18 - 4/9/17)

We made it into South Carolina. Little Pee Dee State Park is just the kind of place we love. It is very woodsy and the sites are quite large. It is located on Lake Norman. Lake Norman no longer has water because the dam was breeched during Hurricane Matthew. We were able to gather lots of wood and have a great fire. There were many squirrels and birds in the area. Located in Latta, SC is a well-known restaurant - Schuler's BBQ. It was featured on the show, The Profit. We love BBQ and had to try it. It was quite good. We try BBQ everywhere...

Dec 2, 2016 - Camp Pedro at South of the Border in Dillon, South Carolina

We started south today. We took I-95 through Virginia and North Carolina and made it just over the state line into South Carolina. We are spending the night at Camp Pedro at South of the Border in Dillon, South Carolina. It was sunny and cooler today. It got down below freezing last night. I’m glad we disconnected the water before we went to bed. We waited for the temperature to rise some before we got going this morning so that the hydraulic fluid could warm up. It was a windy drive. We didn’t get here until 4:30. Weather: low 30°, high...

Our 2016 Travels

May 22, 2016 - Dillon, SC

Sun, 22 May: Continuing north... We awoke about half past seven, had breakfast, went thru our checklists, bade farewell to Dave and Rebecca Fuller, and wove our way thru the forest and out of the Thousand Trails park. Once clear we connected the dink and rolled onto I 95 northbound. It was an uneventful drive with no stops other than to switch drivers about half way. Just shy of the North Carolina border we exited at Dillon and found a prime spot in the Wal*Mart parking lot. We're currently enjoying the cool weather (it is forecast to drop...

2016 Travels

Jan 25, 2015 - Dillon, SC

Dillon, South Carolina is on I-95 near the southern border of South Carolina with Georgia. We made this a short distance stop on 185 miles because we have 2 UConn basketball games to watch: the men at noon and the women at 3 PM. Also, after a couple of 8 hour driving days we can use the rest. Our satellite dish works great! Mack and Holly have adjusted well to the road. They were a little nervous on the first day but then settled down on the days after. Just before we got to Dillon we passed the 'famous' South of the Border retail outlet....

May 5, 2014 - Roadside America

The billboards began lining I-95 in South Carolina about 60 miles from the RV park and continued every two or three miles. “Pedro” was the billboard’s mascot and the billboards had kitschy sayings like “You never sausage a place!” “Pedro’s weather forecast: Chili today, hot tamale!” “Keep yelling, kids. They’ll stop.” We knew we finally arrived when a 97 foot tall “Pedro” caricature greeted us at the exit of the freeway holding a neon sign welcoming us to “South of the Border.” SOB, as it is known, and is located just south of the North...

1/2/14 We pull out of Wilson NC around 1030 and head south. 1355 entering SC We can't check into the next campground before 1500 so we kill a little time along the way at South of the Border, just after we enter SC. They have signs for over 100 miles in both diretions and have mastered camppy and tacky. They have fireworks, arcades, a campground, restraunts, gas stations, truck stop and a bunch of shops with a tons of junk. About 1530 we enter Bass Lake RV Park in Dillon SC, it's right off I95 easy in and out. It's raining when we pull...

Well after another grueling 78 mile day here we are within 40 miles of Darlington Raceway. Nice park with an unlimited number of shops restaurants ice cream stores miniature golf etc and its called South of the border, you can guess the general theme of the place. We must be back in S Carolina as there are fireworks stores everywhere. Weather is again humid with mid 80's temps so forecast is good for the days ahead at the track. Deadline has passed for this weeks questions and I am happy to announce that all who responded had the right...

Away we go 2013

Jan 7, 2013 - Dillon, South Carolina

We stayed the last two nights at South of the Border in Dillon, South Carolina. This is literally right at the No. Carolina/So. Carolina border. It's quite a complex. It was built in the 50's and was a huge tourist destination in the day. There is a campground, a motel, 5 restaurants, a small amusement park, a reptile lagoon, several specialty gift type stores, a couple of gas stations, a small market, a convention hall, arcade and casino. The campground is great. There are 164 full hook-up sites with security. Our site was 90 feet long....

Jul 10, 2011 - Say Hello to my Little Buddy!

Sunday 7/10 /11 Say Hello To My Little Buddy! The Navigator and I are trying our hand at volunteering at National and State Parks as camp hosts, visitor center info peeps, interpretive guides or anything else short of manual labor. After joining Workampers and publishing our resumes on their website, we were contacted by many organizations looking for workampers. We accepted a position as camp hosts at Greenbrier State Park in Western Maryland. As a precursor to our trip, we decided to spend a couple of days at Anastasia State Park in St...

Gone with the Wind!

Jun 19, 2011 - South of the Border in Dillon, SC

On the way to Albany, GA spent two nights on the road. Stayed at a place called South of the Border, which has a campground, hotels and restuarants. It's a great place to bring kids as there are a lot of stores and activities for kids. Everything is on a mexican theme. Every restaurant is on this theme, even steakhouse The Peddlar, which is an upscale restuarant that built their restuarant into a huge sombrero. There's also a sombrero on top of a high tower where you can walk around the brim of the hat to take pictures and see the...
