Jun 26, 2007 - Charleston, SC - Day 1
Today was what this lifestyle is all about - a new city with lots of history and places to explore. We got up early, packed a picnic lunch and headed out for a whole day of new experiences!!!! First up was Drayton Hall and Plantation. The Drayton family came to South Carolina in the 1680's and quickly became one of the richest families in the colonies; growing rice, indigo & cotton with slave labor. In 1738, John Drayton, who was a younger son and therefore would not inherit the family holdings, began construction on his own home. Drayton...

We drove Minnie down to Charleston from Myrtle Beach on Friday morning. It was a short and easy drive south. We got into Mount Pleasant around noon and sit up camp at the KOA in that city. After a quick lunch, we left Mount Pleasant for Patriot's Point Park - located about seven miles down the road. As we approached the USS Yorktown, I saw the Fleet Balistic Missle tribute. It was the actual sail of a missle boat, and the remainder was made of bricks. Memories flooded back, and I made a quick left into the parking lot. The monument is well...

Jun 1, 2007 - Charleston
June 1 Our drive to Charleston was not a great distance and we took side roads to enjoy the time. The woman who served me in the bookstore in Fairhope said if you're going along the South Carolina coast, you must visit Beaufort. It wasn't far out of our way and the drive was very scenic with salt marshes and estuaries along the way. We were just going to drive through but opted to park by the marina and stroll along the harbour front scenic walk. That turned out to be a great idea and we found a nice covered patio for lunch. The historic...

May 6, 2007 - Hi, y'all, from Charleston!
What an amazing "city"! It's hard to imagine Charleston as a city because the skyline is so low that it looks like a large spread-out town. By law, no building can be higher than the tallest church steeple. It looks as if 99% of the buildings are no more than three stories. There's one six-story building near the waterfront and it sticks out like a sore thumb! I'm not going to reference all the pictures in the text like I did last time because there are so many of them and it would take FOREVER! Just keep in mind that all those "Beautiful...

Next-to-last night from Lake Aire RV Park, Hollywood, SC, near Charleston. I have a new girlfriend!!!!! Not that I love any of my other girlfriends any less & they certainly should not be jealous of this new one. I have fallen in love with this town that calls itself Charleston!!!!! Its beauty is so deep, so full, so sincere. That beauty is much more than skin-deep; it goes to the girl's very soul. It reveals itself in soooooo many different ways. I truly believe that I will regret leaving here Tuesday as much or more than I have regretted...

Apr 20, 2007 - Charleston, SC
We left Myrtle Beach this morning around a 11:00. Had to wait for Lowell to wake up.:) After a shopping trip to Camping World to pick up some more RV stuff, we headed south to Charleston. About a 2 hour drive down US-17 for us. A pretty nice drive without much traffic, luckily. We arrived at Lake Aire CG around 1:30 and checked into our site. An OK place, but probably not somewhere we would hurry back to. Our plan is to stay a few days and visit Charleston and the surrounding area. So far we shot a few pictures of some wierd birds that look...

Still from Lake Aire RV Park, in Hollywood, SC, just west of Charleston. I've said it before in this journal, but days like today just feed my excitement about continuing this lifestyle for the next 15-20 years!!!!! What a day. Again, Vicki had taken charge of researching & planning the day's agenda. She chose Tour C with Charleston's Finest Historic Tours, Inc. Tour C gave us a package deal combining their A & B Tours. How novel of them to name the combined tour as Tour C, huh??? Our driver/narrator for both segments was Rick Smith. Rick...

Apr 15, 2007 - Charleston SC
No bad weather last night. It was windy as tree limbs are all over the place. Not much rain. We got lucky and it went north of us. We drove about 140 miles north to James Island county park in Charleston, SC. The wind was blowing hard all day and that makes it hard to drove these big motorhomes. It took about 50 minutes for us to get out of Savannah. That town is not laid out very well, so it was a problem driving with a lot of stop and go. Finally got to James Island County Park. Appears to be a nice place. While checking in, the...

Carla and Pete here—We arrived in Charleston on March 28 after attempting to leave twice, on the 26th and the 27th, but the flights to Spangdahlem, Germany were cancelled so we waited at Pete's parent's house. When we got to Charleston we learned there weren't any seats on the flight leaving that day and the "show time" for the flight on the 29th wasn't until after 8 pm so we went sight seeing during the day on the 29th (Thursday). We took a drive into Charleston, crossing the Cooper River bridge (really new, really cool suspension bridge)...

Mar 25, 2007 - We're heading out!
Carla here--Well, I'm feeling better so we're leaving bright and early tomorrow morning (Monday). Hopefully we'll be able to catch a flight out of Charleston, SC tomorrow afternoon heading for the Air Force Base in Spangdahlem, Germany. Spangdahlem is on the west side of Germany, north of Trier and south of Colgne. Our tentative plans are to spend about a week sight-seeing around Spangdahlem. We want to go south to Trier, which is Germany's oldest city and is supposed to have the best Roman ruins in Germany. We also want to go to Colgne to...

Friday-Monday, February 2-5, 2007 Friday, February 2, 2007 At 10:54 we left Rincon with no rain or wind. It was 51˚ and cloudy. We traveled I-95, Highway 17, I-526, I-26, and Highway 78. We passed a building called US Vegetable Laboratory. We wondered what new foods they would be developing. We arrived at Ladson, about 25 miles north of Charleston, at 1:15 pm. After driving 142 miles the temperature was 59˚ and it was partly sunny. The hooking up was easy but not so with our satellite dish. When we tried to lock onto the satellite, we were...

Jan 2, 2007 - Maritime Museum
We've seen a submarine (back in October in New Hampshire) and a battleship (last week in North Carolina), so, today we decide to complete our Naval and Maritime knowledge by touring Patriots Point in Mt Pleasant (Charleston), SC. Just like touring the battleship, we get to walk the decks of the famous "Fighting Lady", the aircraft carrier Yorktown. She is 888-feet long, carried 90 planes and a crew of approximately 3,400 people. She earned 11 battle stars in World War II. We also got to tour the destroyer Laffey and the Coast Guard cutter...
