Feb 8, 2017 - San Juan, Puerto Rico

We arrived in San Juan 7:30 am and left at 3:00 pm. We had also been here numerous times, so again we walked around Old San Juan. We took a free trolley, but it was a closed vehicle and it was hot. We got off part way up to the fort, and waited for a while, hoping to catch one of the open air trolleys. After a while, we set off walking again. We never did see one of the trolleys that we took on our previous trips. Perhaps they aren't doing that anymore due to the poor economy here. The show tonight was Getaway Island and was pretty good.

Nov 10, 2016 - Land Ho!

We've been able to follow our journey across the Atlantic on our TV, much like the inflight displays on airplanes. Across the top of this map, a ticker tape with information runs, giving current latitude, longitude, weather conditions, sea conditions, ship speed, time, distance from origin and last ports, and distance to next and final ports. Mike is amazed at the straight line of our travel, with no course corrections, as he's been watching the course direction. It instills confidence, these guys must know what they're doing. Earlier in...

Portugal Cruise

May 2, 2015 - board Jewel of the Seas

Our hotel was so close to the ship, we could have walked there. Even though the luggage weighs less than usual, schlepping it half a mile was not appealing; we took a cab. Boarding couldn't have been easier, a great improvement over our last cruise which gave us a significant discount on this one. It was extra important that all went well, because it is Ken's birthday. I came well prepared with something to hang on the wall outside our door so all who passed by would wish him well. It took a while for our luggage to come, but wouldn't you...

May 1, 2015 - fly to the Isle of Enchantment

San Juan is always farther away than it should be. In my mind it is a simple jaunt to the northern Caribbean, but it took us all day to get here - as it always does! We couldn't get a good deal on the non stop flight, so we paused in Orlando before continuing on. Fourteen of us took the whole flight so in that pause, the Southwest staff quickly and efficiently cleaned up the plane, loaded more snacks, exchanged passengers and we were off again. It took only forty minutes. We were glad we had brought along a sandwich from Chicago. There was...

Mar 16, 2014 - Parque Forestal, La Marquesa

If I could speak and read Spanish, I could tell you the name of the place we went to but I copied the name from the brochure. It’s a pretty cool place. It’s a forest park and a conservatory for local birds and butterflies. I would definitely add this to anyone’s list of places to visit while in PR. The place is located on a side of a mountain with a great view of San Juan and the Caribbean. We left there hungry and couldn’t wait for some of Matt’s ribs.

Mar 14, 2014 - San Juan Puerto Rico

I was more than just a little concern about driving in Puerto Rico. I had these imagines of un-organized traffic, cars dodging and weaving. At the car rental desk, they advise that I get all the insurance I could. I normally don’t, I just use my auto insurance to cover travel like this. I decided to talk to my insurance company; “Sorry, we don’t cover you in Puerto Rico”…um….now I’m concerned. We are in PR to visit our son Matt and his family. He is a chief in the Coast Guard and stationed in the San Juan area. His new assignment has given...
