May 20, 2012 - First Four Days Down
So we did our first four days of work....a few minutes (very few) of boredom and a whole lot of Chinese Fire Drills. Lots of stuff to learn how to do on the computer system, and even the best teachers in the world would struggle to teach me something new. Anyway, by the end of day four the comfort level was rising as well as the need for a day off...and we have four of them! Yesterday was our first day off as our mentor/partners took over running the gatehouse. Our first order of business in the morning was to saddle up and head for the...Jump to full entry
May 14, 2012 - The Day Before We Go To Work
We start work tomorrow, so the pressure started on Friday...we trained for a good part of the day with our partners. Saturday we all worked at cleaning the building we will be working in...we also hung some flowers outside. Sunday Ivory and I drove to Tioga Downs in New York anticipating a knock-out flea market. The people were nice but the market was only so-so. They do have pacers and a casino there however, so we expect to return later this summer. When we got home Sunday Destiny and True had done more landscaping and we had also brought...Jump to full entry
May 13, 2012 - He's Baaaaaack!
Most of our time has been spent doing little jobs around the campground...cleaning up the area around the coach...planting...training for the job...hooking up the aux propane tank...cleaning the building we will be working in...making runs for ice cream. But Friday Ivory made a run north to Arnot NY with Destiny...so I went to the range. Brought a .45 pistol, a rimfire rifle and my 45-70 Buffalo Classic. Shot the pistol and the rimfire at varying targets and ranges. Then brought out the 45-70. Oh my....first round thumps down range and...Jump to full entry

May 7, 2012 - What's Been Goin' On
Tomorrow we are here a week. Most of last week was spent with Destiny and True, driving around, learning something about the area, and meeting some of the Rangers. Saturday we drove up to the Finger Lake area...stopped at a really big Amish market, then drove through several towns in the area, including two shown in the photos above. Sunday we spent most of our time working on our site and cleaning the coach. Weather wise, we had a couple of stormy nights last week, but most days have been cool and partly cloudy. Only one day was really...Jump to full entry
May 5, 2012 - Yikes - Bikes
So the dumpster bike is a POS...it rolls but doesn't shift, the back wheel is bent. It'll be going back into a dumpster....or I'll give it to somebody who REALLY needs a bike. Ivory's bike is a tad too small for her. All adjusted out, but the frame is just not quite big enough. I bought another bike for myself yesterday....found it on Craig's List...this one is a home run...mountain bike, runs perfectly, ten years old, original cost about $600, I bought it for $50. Now got to find a deal like that for Ivory. Visited a laundry yesterday, ate...Jump to full entry
May 4, 2012 - Checking Out Pennsylvania
Yesterday Ivory made a run to a couple of the local towns while I washed the coach. When she returned I drove to Muncy to pick up her new (to her) bike. We bought it two months ago on Craig's list, the seller has been holding it for us until we got into the area. While I was loading it into the car he mentioned he had another bike he had found while "dumpster diving".....I bought it on the spot...for $10. Every night we have had storms rumble through the area. Night before last the camp host came to the door just before 10PM to warn us of...Jump to full entry
May 2, 2012 - We Are Here!
Yesterday we arrived at the campground we will be working at this summer. We left Montoursville around 10AM and we were here by 12:30. True Blue and Destiny Glow arrived at about the same time we did. The rest of the day was spent sorting out the coach...going from travel mode to camping mode. Our site is a little rough right now, but has great potential. Most of it is green grass except for the pad we are parked on which is heavy gravel. We have two picnic tables and a clothes line (!). I guess they think we will eat a lot and do a bunch...Jump to full entry
Jul 20, 2011 - All tuckered out
Tuckered Out What a day we had yesterday. We went down the road from the lake we are staying on and hooked up with a ‘Rails to Trails’ bike trail. This trail runs from near Wellsboro, Pa. for about 64 miles into the Wilds of Pennsylvania. It passes through what is called the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. What a pipe dream that is! Don’t get me wrong, the trail is magnificent as it winds through scattered farms along a slow moving creek. It then joins with another creek, Pine Creek, and becomes the famous Pine Creek bike trail in the Rails...Jump to full entry
Jul 18, 2011 - How Sweet It Is
To be back on the road again. We hit the road just before 10 AM yesterday morning. We wanted to get around Harrisburg before any Sunday traffic built up. Our last week at Jack and Sharon's sure went fast. Everyday we completed a few tasks to get 'the Neighborhood' ready for the next leg. Then we would play tennis, grocery shop, and make and eat great dinners. The weather took a turn for the good, amazingly enough. Humidity levels and dew points were low enough that it was quite comfortable outside for these parts. This temperate phase...Jump to full entry
May 8, 2009 - Ives Run Recreation Area
Up early and headed to Walmart, sorry David, to grocery shop and also to look for some other things we needed. Left Genesseo after lunch and headed for Pennsylvania. Stayed in Tioga in an Army Corps of Engineers Recreation Area called Ives Run. Beautiful. We lucked out. Wonderful site overlooking the lake. Dinner and a huge walk.Jump to full entry
