Oct 13, 2018 - Yuengling brewery tour

The drive north to Pottsville took us very quickly into the mountains and the town is on a severe incline. We saw a man pushing a cart up the hill from his car that was parked next to ours - would be hard to get anything heavy transported that way. We are at the oldest brewery in the US - was established in 1829. That building soon burned and the buildings we toured were first built in 1831. This was just great. The tour started in the original cave, dug by hand, to store the beer in a cool place as there was no such thing as refrigeration...

2018 Trip

Oct 12, 2018 - Daniel Boone homestead and Hopewell Furnace

It was rainy yesterday so we stayed at the Eagle. Today we toured Daniel Boone’s parent’s home, a very good tour of the original log cabin foundation. This was the foundation of the log cabin built in 1730 by Daniel Boones' parents who were the first white settlers in this area. There is a spring that runs through the basement to provide water and cool storage for milk and vegetables. Daniel played with Indians here and learned hunting skills from them. The Boone's moved on into Kentucky in 1750 as two of the sons married non Quakers and...

2018 Trip

Oct 10, 2018 - Shartlesville

I didn't plan our lunch spot - from Bristol to Shartlesville the interstate was busy but not backed up, thankfully. We took the Tappan Zee Bridge for no toll as we were going the right way. However there are no rest areas and we were trying to find a Walmart that was not at the exit in the book, saw the sign as we drove past it. Then tried to find the next one about 10 miles down the road, got off, made the wrong turn and drove through narrow streets to get back on the highway. Next stop was that looked possible was a Pilot with a T/A...
