Aug 1, 2012 - Almost in Paradise! ***Country Acres C'ground, Gordonville, PA

Moving from Gettysburg PA about 60 miles today to Gordonville, PA took about 2 and 1/2 hours. Traffic, traffic, traffic. Another mile on Highway 30 east is the town of Paradise! We didn't make it today, but will tomorrow. I assumed the "Pennsylvania Dutch", the Amish farms in Lancaster, PA county were in a rural area. NOT! They are surrounded by city, outlet malls, theaters, tourist shops, restaurants. The campground where we are parked offers a free two-hour bus tour of the farms. We are going in the morning at 8:45 a.m. We drove around...

Jun 9, 2011 - Pennsylvania Dutch Country

Sunday through Thursday. We traveled down to Gordonville on Sunday along with Beth, Jim, Gram and Mo. We camped at Country Acres Park. Jim and Beth had a cabin and we had the campsite next to them. This is the nicest campground we have stayed in. We had a big, open grassy area between our sites for the kids to run and play on. There is a really nice pool and the bathrooms are spotless. The only draw back is that we are immediately adjacent to a large tract of farmland where they have recently spread manure. The fragrance was pretty bad...

Jun 2, 2009 - A Kick Back Day

Today was a kick back day in camp. It definitely is more humid and this afternoon, the dark clouds are gathering again, an ominous sign of things to come. In fact, the severe thunderstorm warnings have just started showing up on the Weather Channel. Today was a day for long hot showers and doing the laundry. It is always such a good feeling to have all the laundry done and the bed changed with clean sheets. If I was wealthy, my one indulgence would be to have clean sheets on my bed every night. -- Today, we have had the privilege of...

Jun 1, 2009 - Search for Covered Bridges and Intercourse

Now that I've got your attention . . . Last night, I discovered a new brochure that showed lots of the covered bridges in the area, so today, we set out to see if we could find some of them. We also wanted to return to some of the little towns for shopping and lunch or dinner. -- The weather today continues to be perfect although there is a nice breeze and it is cooler. The weather guessers are predicting a return of the humidity tomorrow so we wanted to finish up our tourist activities today. -- We found out that today was an Amish...

May 31, 2009 - Driving Through the Amish Countryside

Today was another perfect weather day. We had sunshine and a high temp of around 75 with no humidity. I could get used to this. We ran the AC briefly this afternoon while we were out and about just because the rig does tend to get stuffy. But this afternoon, the wind has kicked up, we have opened all the windows, and it is just gorgeous. It looked for a while like we would have a repeat of the recent thunderstorms, but they have moved out of the area. -- This morning, I packed a picnic lunch and we headed out the door to explore the Amish...

May 30, 2009 - Bunnies

This evening, while we were relaxing in camp, we noticed a bunny right outside our door and the cats noticed too. They are so funny to watch when they are "stalking" prey with no hopes of ever catching it. They crouch down and slink over to the door. The bunny was soon joined by a larger bunny, we assume mom or dad, and another small one. The cats enjoyed watching them for over an hour and as you can see, the bunnies were right outside the door.

May 30, 2009 - Side Trip to Philadelphia

Today, I got to cross another item off my "Bucket List". For many years now I have been interested in the Mutter Museum. I have watched many shows on television about it and have read articles in magazines. I would never have dreamed in a million years that I would actually get to visit it. What's that? You've never heard of the Mutter Museum? Well, most people haven't. -- The Mutter Museum is located in Philadelphia, which is about 70 miles away. We decided we would drive into Philadelphia today, thus avoiding commute traffic. Today was a...

May 29, 2009 - We Take a Bus Trip through Amish Country

Today the humidity is definitely higher although the high clouds continue to hang around. Once in a while the sun peaks through and then it becomes really muggy, so we are thankful for the cloudiness. The temp gauge this afternoon is sitting at 85. -- This morning we took part in a free bus tour of Amish Country as guests of the RV park. The Smuckers Brothers own five motels and the campground and offer free tours to their guests. Of course, the bus tour includes stops along the way at various Amish stores in the hopes you will part with...

May 29, 2009 - Amish Information

I wanted to try to remember all of the things our tour guide, Nancy, talked about today regarding the Amish. She was raised by Amish parents but when she was in her 30's, she left the Amish faith. Her two brothers and a sister also left and are now Mennonites. She said she can still attend church services but her parents are not allowed to sit with her. I asked if anyone ever joined the Amish faith even if they had not been raised in it and she said she has heard of it happening, but not very often. -- The Amish do not work on Saturday. It...

May 28, 2009 - Gordonville, PA

We had a short travel day today and headed east about 70 miles to the little town of Gordonville, Pennsylvania, which is located in Lancaster County otherwise known as Amish Country. The skies remain overcast and misty with the heavy humidity - about 65%. It is supposed to rain later this afternoon. The temp gauge reads 80 degrees. The air feels cool enough except when you get outside and move around too much. The drive today was mostly via highway but the countryside and the scattered houses were beautiful. -- We are staying over the...

Oct 7, 2007 - To Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

We had a short drive today to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. We stopped along the way to eat at Cracker Barrell. We both had their Sunday special fried chicken. For the next three nights our home will be the Country Acres Campground in Gordonville. It is a very nice one with the important amenities of full hookups, free WiFi, cable TV and laundry. We are very close to the laundry so getting that chore done was a breeze. We registered for a free two-hour tour of the surrounding Amish country tomorrow morning. We have to drive only about...

Jun 4, 2007 - Some Awesome Reunions . . . and then Amish Country

After we dispensed with being tourists, the rest of our time in the New York/New Jersey area was devoted to spending time with people we haven't seen in EONS. Before I go any further, let me get this out . . . . I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT I FORGOT TO GET A PICTURE OF US WITH MARGO AND JEFF!!!! Sorry for yelling but I've obsessed over that since Thursday night. When Margo reads this, maybe she'll have mercy on me and email me a photo of her and Jeff so I can at least post THAT. But I'm getting ahead of myself. On Thursday, we started out by...
