May 11, 2009 - Amish Country

Today we headed to Lancaster County to visit “Amish Country”. It was very interesting. Not at all like our “Mennonite” area. Very commercial. Basically it is three roads traveling east-west with farmland in-between. As you travel between the roads you get a glimpse of Amish farm life however along the three roads it is like a continuous main street of St. Jacobs only “tackier”. Had lunch at one of many “Family” restaurants that advertised a smörgåsbord. They are everywhere. As we got closer to Lancaster it became more commercial including...

May 10, 2009 - Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day. Surprised Marilyn with her Mother's day present – Tater Tots from Sonic Drive- In. She actually liked them. We then headed to the original outlet mall, VF Outlets, in Reading. A major disappointment. Half the stores were empty, as in closed for good, and many of the remaining ones were on their last legs. Needless to say we didn't spend a lot of time at the mall. Headed back to the campground and moved to an electric site. Very easy. Played with the TV and managed to get a huge number of channels with the antennae. No...

May 9, 2009 - South Of Reading

Slow start as we didn't have far go. Headed for the Reading and Lancaster area. Stopped at the Pennsylvania Welcome Center on Hwy 15 and got lots of information including a route to Reading. The route they gave us was awful. It went through suburban areas with lots of traffic lights and included sections with 9%-10% hills. Very slow going. After a tiring drive we ended up at French Creek State Park outside Reading around 5:00 PM. Had to take a non-electric site as everything else was taken. It doesn't bother us as we are self-sufficient. We...

Jun 12, 2008 - Iron Plantation

Hopewell Furnace - Thursday, June 12 We spent Wednesday in camp at French Creek, then on Thursday we took off on a bike ride and hike to see Hopewell Furnace. Like many of the attractions Madolyn finds, Hopewell Furnace was one neither of us had ever heard of before, but true to her track record of picking winners it turned out to be a unique and wonderful find. Getting there required a three and a half mile round trip through the woods. The trail was good, and while it descended several hundred feet into a valley it was stepped and built...
