Jun 14, 2018 - Charleroi, PA, near Pittsburgh, PA

14-Jun-18 Charleroi, PA, near Pittsburgh, PA The schedule called for a few days stop in New Philadelphia, OH with Cherie’s cousin Jan. They live in Maryland. But we couldn’t get reservations so we changed it to Harrisburg, PA. That meant that we had a stop somewhere in-between as it is too far than we like to drive in one day. We stopped at the Pine Cove Beach Club and RV Resort in Charleroi, PA, near Pittsburgh. This place has among other things, a fishing pond and a 1 million gallon pool complete with 2 water slides and water trampoline....

Jul 1, 2014 - Pittsburgh

Our trip from Gettysburg to Charleroi was without incident. We did run into one traffic back-up on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, but it was no more than a 15 minute delay. Crossing Pennsylvania was beautiful... As hard as it is for a southern boy to say this, Pennsylvania is a beautiful state... but... but... they do have a hard winter in this part of the state. We arrived at our campground and got settled into our site. We're happy with our park. The park was initially established as a swimming club as much as 40 years ago and the RV park was...

Sep 5, 2013 - Charleroi, PA

Today we head west. We take route 30 (the Lincoln Highway) to Breezewood. We drove the Lincoln Highway across Pennsylvania in 2010. It is a route you have to take once but that is enough. Oops, I guess I am wrong. You have to drive it twice. We see the mountains in front of us. We drive the twists and the turns. We climb over two summits with some 8% grades. We shift into low gear and put our flashers on. My palms are sweating. The good news is that we do okay. It is a good test run for the RV. We now have our motorcycle in the trailer. We...

Jul 19, 2012 - Here for one more day

We had some changes to our itinerary occur today. We were leaving this afternoon for Bedford, Pa. but when I called the park, they were full. Uh, oh, regroup time. Fortunately, we had 2 hours before we had to leave here to find an alternate place to stay. And, had to stay here another night. So, for real, we are heading for Champion, Pa. for 2 nights leaving tomorrow, then to Gettysburg for 5 days or so. And, we made reservations ..ta da! Once our life was on track again, we both looked at each other and said “Pizza?” Of course, we headed...

Jul 18, 2012 - Charleroi, Pennsylvania

We were very lazy today. Stayed around the house till 11:30, then decided it was time to see what Charleroi looked like. A little history…” Luck came two-fold in the beginnings of Charleroi, PA. Three men were touched with the luck of arranging to sell what, on the surface, appeared to be useless hilly, rocky land to farmers Robert McKean, Thomas Redd, and William McMahan. The decision to create a town with sale of lots on March 4, 1890 was soon followed by a second touch of luck: the discovery of oil and natural gas, and the laying out of...

Jul 17, 2012 - Ohio-W.V.-Penna

We left about 10:00 a.m. this morning and at 10:50 it was already 91 degrees outside. Needless to say, it was an air conditioner day, be damned the fuel mileage. We drove through 3 states today. We drove on I-70 all the way through Ohio, West Virginia (which was only 14 miles long) and Pennsylvania. Dropping down into West Virginia we only got to see the city of Wheeling as we were whizzing by at 60 mph. A few days ago John was over the moon when he found diesel for $3.39 a gallon. If we had a hundred gallon tank on the truck he would have...

Jul 2, 2009 - Southwest Pennsylvania

Yesterday was a travel day, with us arriving in Charleroi, Pennsylvania in mid-afternoon. Jim enjoys travel days. For him, as was true when he rode Harley's, "it's not the destination; it's the journey." He thoroughly enjoys driving the motor coach. The weather was not great- cloudy with intermittent rain. High in the mid-70's. Typical summer weather- at least for THIS summer. Today we went site-seeing. First stop was Wilmerding, Pennsylvania- a borough to the east of Pittsburgh that is the site of the George Westinghouse Castle. As I was...

Jun 2, 2008 - Travelling Into Pennsylvania

Monday June 2nd, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, & Pennsylvania. We left Yogi Bear Monday morning at 7:00 and headed east on I-70 again. We spent 100 dollars on gas yesterday. We saw prices as high as $4.05 a gallon in some places, but we usually got it for less in Murphy Gas stations at Wal-Marts. We had travelled so much farther than we expected yesterday that we were only about 41 miles from Ohio when we left the campground. Considering the fact that I was holding my speed down to 60 in an effort to get better mileage pulling the Casita,...
