Jun 20, 2018 - Day 17 - Ashland, KY to Bellafonte, PA

Another travel day with no attractions on the agenda. After a continental breakfast at the hotel, we left Ashland, Kentucky, about 7:45 AM and by 8:00 AM we were in West Virginia. WV is lush with the trees all dressed in their green finery now. The hills look like beautiful green carpeting. We did notice, though, that many of the hills had cell towers on them, something that is forbidden in the Adirondacks. The towers in the Adirondack Park may be there, but those that are there are in disguise (as pine trees). We traveled both interstate...

Jun 4, 2018 - Day 1 - Lewis to Bellefonte, PA

We left Lewis in the pouring rain (not when the pictures were taken - lol) at 7:00 AM. It was a cold damp 45 degrees! We try to eliminate as many interstates as we can, traveling mainly secondary roads, and some cow-paths as Gary will attest to. I set my GPS to where I am headed and some of the secondary roads turn into third-ary and fouth-ary roads!!! But we manage to get where we are headed. If any of you know Route 8 from Long Lake (Essex County) to Speculator, NY, you know how crooked that road is. Someday I am going to straighten that...

Jun 27, 2014 - Long Driving day

This was the longest leg of the trip. I drove about 317 miles. The drive got a bit exciting. I briefly crossed across West Virginia. They mountains there. One particular one a downward grade of about 6%. Well, a vehicle my size gains a lot of speed while going down hill. The RV has a grade brake that works with the transmission to slow the RV down. Well, I hit 70mph and looking ahead a saw a narrow bridge that went over the Ohio River. Then the GPS announced that I needed to take the next exit in .5 miles past the bridge. Here I'm hurdling...

Summer Trip 2014

Jul 5, 2013 - We're off!

Thinking that we were not traveling far today, we spent a leisurely morning at the Peterson's. Jenn, Lisa and Oma spent some time picking currants for jelly. We ended up with about 4 pounds of currants and Jennifer decided that she was going to take on the jelly making. We can't wait to taste it. We left Southbury at about 2:00, heading west on Rt 84 to New York. We had not been able to reserve a campsite for tonight because of the holiday weekend, every place wanted a three night minimum. So we had decided to spend our first night on the...

Aug 28, 2011 - Penn State & Penn's Cave

Last night we had steady, gentle rain that lasted into this morning, but no wind. By noon today, the sun was out and the temperature was in the 70s with a cool breeze. I forgot to mention that yesterday on our way west on I80, we saw heading east probably a hundred orange Asplundt tree service trucks and power trucks from various power companies. From the sounds of the news reports, they are all being used for hurricane clean up. The first thing we did this morning was ride around Bellefonte to see some of its Victorian buildings. All the...

Aug 27, 2011 - Bellefonte, PA

We headed west on I80 about 9:30 this morning. We had a quick, heavy rain shower last night about 2:30, and this morning the skies were still overcast. As we drove up and over the ridge to get out of the Delaware River valley, we drove through low hanging clouds, but no more rain. We stopped at a rest area and had lunch in Arvy. When we got back on I80, we came upon a long backup. There must have been something serious going on ahead. We stopped still. The traffic went as far ahead as we could see. We took a side road and found ourselves...

Jun 12, 2011 - Bellefonte, PA

Sun, 12 Jun: This morning we made the short (44 mile) drive from Lewistown to Bellefonte. We arrived at the American Philatelic Society (APS) right about eleven and got Carpe set up for our stay. Since there is no electic or water to connect, it was a very quick operation. Our route took us through Pennsylvania's rolling hills (where aren't there hills in Pennsylvania?). We used US 22 to US 322 to I 99 to PA 150 and then local streets. It was a very pleasant drive with excellent weather and light traffic. The slide behaved as it is supposed...

May 21, 2011 - Huaraz, Peru

Hola Amigos! Sorry because i am truly lacking in my updates and also in my knowledge of how to use this site--photo uploads take forever! Anyway, i´m in Huaraz, Peru and this place is freaking awesome! Smack dab in the middle of the Cordillera Blanca, where you can´t swing a dead cat without hitting a glacier or 6,000 meter peak. Put this place on your list, buy a ticket and get here now! I just finished the Santa Cruz trek, 4 days through big lush green valleys, topped off with 6,000 meter snow cap peaks surrounded by gigantic glaciers....

May 9, 2011 - just another bus in the night

Hey Benji, how´s things in PA? Is Troy keeping up on his belly rubbing duties? Get any ticks yet this spring? Sorry i haven´t been in touch, i´ve been having a blast here and it seems just as soon as i finish one thing i´m off to my next adventure, which brings me to the topic of this entry. Last night i was awaken by a loud thud then a screech. I turned to look out the window my head had been bouncing of off for the last 3 hours, and in my half awakened state i wondered why there was a tire, outside my window, rolling next to the bus. All...

Apr 23, 2011 - Visiting the Sacred Valley

The photos here are from my visit to Tipon, which was about half hour bus ride from Cusco. The Inca ruins here were a series of terraces up a mountain valley with channels constructed for the water. of course the rock work is amazing and to view the water canals still in operation is very impressive.

Sep 24, 2010 - Penn State in the Fall at the KOA

There is nothing like spending a fall Saturday afternoon with 107,000 of your friends at the Beaver Stadium at Penn State on a home game weekend UNLESS you come the first week of fall and STAY in your RV for the ENTIRE football season! The last week of August we head up to State College, PA with Big Blue as our Motor Home is affectionately called. We make reservations a year in advance for a monthly site at the Bellefonte KOA. It is about 16 miles from the Penn State Campus. We love this campground for many reasons. Sites are easy to get...
