Jun 28, 2010 - Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine

Up early, 8:00am, we got dressed and went to Cracker Barrel for breakfast. Our plan today was to make the 11:00am tour of a coal mine in Ashland, PA but we didn’t make it. We didn’t get to the Pioneer Tunnel until 11:30am. They had a tour at noon so that’s the one we took. We boarded coal cars and journeyed 1800 ft into the mine tunnel in the side of Mahonoy Mountain, which took us 400 ft in depth in the mountain. It was 50 degrees in the tunnel and we were all cold even though we had our jackets, except Bo who only wore his t-shirt. We...
