Jan 3, 2017 - Lahaina & Beach Day

Day 3: Lahaina & Beach Day. We started the day by attending a "Vacation Club" presentation in order to get free tickets to snorkeling at Molokini and Turtle Arches. It wasn't too bad, no high pressure and the guy was funny. So after an hour, we got our free tickets! Before the presentation, we had stopped at the Olawalu General Store, founded in 1932 and still like it was! They had the ever-present Hawaiian staples of SPAM and Boiled Peanuts. Out front there were some very pretty Hibiscus flowers! After the presentation, we had a very nice...

Jan 2, 2017 - Haleakala National Park

Day 2: Trip to Haleakala National Park. The weather was fairly clear today so we could see Haleakala from our condo. We decided to make the trip to the top (over 10,000 feet elevation!!) Haleakala is a volcano (dormant) that can be viewed from the top looking down into it. You can see where the lava flow broke through the rim and poured out down the side of the mountain. There are also a number of Pu'u's in the main caldera. Each Pu'u is a cinder cone from another subsequent eruption. Also we saw a Pueo (short eared owl) specific to Hawaii...

Jan 20, 2014 - Mon. Jan. 20 - Haleakala

Haleakala means "house of the sun" in Hawaiian. Once again, pictures cannot capture the majesty of this area. We drove up a series of switchbacks to get to the 4000' elevation on our drive to the top of the volcano Haleakala and stopped at the first visitors' center. Historians believe the last eruption of this volcano was around 1790. They use two distinctly different maps done about 20 years apart (one about 1780 the other about 1800) and because a bay is filled in with lava by the 1800 map argue the volcano must have erupted between 1780...

Aug 20, 2011 - Mt Haleakala Hawaii

Mt Haleakala is a magical place. It's like stepping into another world, the dormant volcanic region is truly a unique experience. The crater of Mt Haleakala is said to be one of the quietest locations on earth, so quiet that they cannot even measure it because it exceeds the technical capability of any equipment. The rare Haleakala silversword plant which is only found there is sight to see. As well as catching a beautiful Hawaiian sunset above the clouds.

Apr 7, 2011 - HAWAII - Insel MAUI: Haleakala Vulkan

Jan 14, 2006 - Service Project At Haleakala Crater, Haleakala National Park, Maui, Hawaii

My parents, TK and Lorraine, and sister, Eva, participated in a weekend service project at Haleakala National Park on the neighbor island of Maui. We spent the weekend in the extinct crater of Haleakala volcano weeding out non-native vegetation and enjoying the amazing out-of-this-world geology.

Feb 8, 2005 - Maui

I have been in Maui for a couple of days now and it is a far cry from the bright lights and skyscrapers of Waikiki that is for sure. I am staying at the Banana Bungalow hostel in Wailuku which is pretty hippy-like and not as nice/safe/clean as Waikiki Beachside but it is ok. The weather here has been excellent, haven't had any rain for the last week and the temperatures go between about 18 to 28 degrees. The drawcard of the hostel is the free tours they run each day. Some of the guys from Waikiki were here when I got here, Emma & Cien from...
