Jul 7, 2016 - Umpqua River Lighthouse and lots of sand

We took a drive today to the Oregon coastline. We stopped first at the Umpqua River Lighthouse and took a tour. The Umpqua River Lighthouse isn't actually on the Umpqua River, but was originally. The original lighthouse, at the mouth of the Umpqua River was washed away when the river flooded in the late 1800's. The lighthouse was rebuilt on its current spot and first lit in 1892. The lighthouse is 61 feet tall and the light can be seen from as far as 21 miles away. During the tour we were able to go partially into the cone to see how the...

Aug 17, 2014 - Winchester RV Resort, Reedsport Or, review

We arrived at Winchester Bay around noon. Could only get one night because park was full. We did get a good spot with view of the bay towards the ocean. Very nice park and is near off road dune area and Upqua Light House. Also a really good fish and chips restaurant that floats on the bay, Ungers. Good Verizon and AT&T service. Also near here is some dry camping, but some spot are really un level.

May 12, 2014 - Up to Reedsport

Up the coast and then inland to Eugene The coast highway fluctuated between forest blocking our view of the water and wide open beautiful views of the rocky beaches and haystacks. You can definitely tell this was caused by some ancient lave flow. We were reminded again of Oregon’s lumber industry as log trucks passed by. Many small beach towns along the highway were quaint and painted brightly. We crossed the Rogue river on stately bridges, then were back in the forested areas again. Another area of haystacks on the beach in the water was...

Aug 8, 2013 - Last day in Winchester Bay

We have spent the last 4 days in Winchester Bay where the weather has been cold and foggy. Craig and his family left for home yesterday....two days early. It was sort of a relief for us because we have had to nurse them along this trip as they were like babes in the woods when it comes to RVing. They bought their big trailer without really thinking it through and, after 8 days on the road, have decided to put it up for sale....much too much work for Craig. After they left, we just hung around the campground spending a lazy day. Adele worked...

Summer Trip 2013

Aug 5, 2013 - Happy Family Day

We happily left Lincoln City behind us. Fred never got over the fact that they cancelled our reservations and we didn't get the prime spot that we should have had. Today we hit the road for Winchester Bay. The trip took about 2 1/2 hours along the coast highway which isn't the best road for RV's but the views are amazing. There is no doubt that the Oregon coast is breathtaking. We got to our destination and breathed a sigh of relief to be parked at the best campsite right on the water. What a spectacular view we have! Photos to come in the...

Jun 14, 2013 - Reedsport Chainsaw Carving Championship

We drove to Reedsport to see the NW Chainsaw Carving Championship. There were 24 professional and 12 Semi-Pro carvers from all over the world. Some of these carvers are exceptional. The championship was over four days, each day they had a set time to work on their Main Carving (one for the championship), mandatory breaks, a quick carve session each day (1.5 hours to carve a mini masterpiece). Enjoyed out time.

Sep 8, 2012 - Winchester Bay Oregon - Winchester RV park

Still at Winchester Bay. Trash Service today, which brings to mind how the trash in Oregon reeks. In Bandon, the state was using these super compactor bins that probably only get emptied every 10-12 years and oh, how they reek…Don’t get a site downwind of those puppies or you will regret it. Here it is fish/crab. Everyone here is crabbing and fishing, pots are boiling outside (all the wives have experienced crabs inside and vowed never again). Once the feasts are over, to the trash cans go the spoils. Once again you either avoid them like...

Sep 7, 2012 - Winchester Bay Oregon - Winchester RV park

Since we had to move we were kind of stuck in the morning, laundry would get done as well as some Abby walks. Of course, everyone else that was departing today had left except the folks in our new slot, we did not see any movement until almost checkout time of 11am. 11am came and went and they were still getting their act together. We finally were able to move about 20 minutes late, got settled, got the laundry out, got lunch. We then headed for a bike ride through the metropolis of Winchester Bay, eclectic town some rundown some nice some...

Sep 6, 2012 - Winchester Bay Oregon - Winchester RV park

Staying at Winchester today and we decided we did not want to do 4 hours to Tillamook (Nuvi would say 3 but we now know better) and then 5 hours to our next destination, that we would stop here and see about extending, then we would head inland to Eugene and our next destination Westfir. We managed to finagle two more days at Winchester and then one at Casey’s in Westfir, but in Winchester we would have move to another site. After we accomplished that we set out to find a rental place (we did not get a good vibe from the place by the...

Aug 1, 2011 - Day trip to Winchester Bay/Reedsport area

August 1: Today we made a day trip to the towns of Winchester Bay and Reedsport. We had a beautiful and sunny day with temperature around 70 on the Bay and maybe 74 inland. Winchester Bay is the heart of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. They're getting ready for DuneFest beginning August 3rd. This the premier ATV event attracting enthusiasts from all over the country. There are already ATVs all over the place. We had a lunch of Fish and Chips on a small boat. Quite a restaurant. Three miles East of Reedsport we...

Oct 15, 2010 - Marching along

We are death marching to finish our family and friends trech. Our last stop of importance is Eurika CA to see Tom and Murline. Meanwhile... arriving in Reedsport was not a good time. We were approx 3 miles out when the trailer's left back tire was smoking. We stopped and let it cool off. With the help of a couple of men in a county truch with a flasher we limped across the bridge and to Les Schwab's. We were told we blew our axel....so we would spend the next 3 days living at Les Schwab's. They were very friendly and VERY accommadating....

Oct 10, 2010 - Trouble in Paradise

Well, our bearings blew out in the rear tire of the trailer. We limped into town with the help of a nice man in a city truck following with his yellow lights flashing. He followed us across the bridge to make sure we made it. We limped into Les Schwab's. We were greeted by one of the men who works there and reassured us he could help us. To further be helpful he let us park the trailer beside the shop and plug into their electricity. This helped keep us warm and the refrigerator cold. The people were awesome there. We were there for 3 long...
