May 10, 2012 - On our way to Walla Walla, WA
We had a beautiful two and a half day drive from Denver to Walla Walla, WA. We stopped for the night at our condo in Midway, UT. The Heber Valley is so beautiful. Just 15 miles from Park City and 12 miles from Sundance, it is wonderful all year round. Al Danner is with us for this adventure and we truly enjoy having him with us. We are missing Marty who had to work and couldn't come along. The truck is running great! We stopped in Boise, ID to visit with Al's cousins and stay the night. Richard and Debbie are a delight and we are happy to...

Aug 29, 2011 - Fort Lewis/McChord WA to Pendleton OR
Today was a short day and Marvin drove the entire trip. We left the base and drove to Tumwater (a Pilot truck stop) for diesel $4.009 per gallon. Further down the road in Oregon we saw it for $3.699 or 3.799 – less than unleaded, but we had a full tank so didn’t need any. It misted awhile this morning. The sun came out though and it was another beautiful day. We took I-84 out of Portland, OR and it runs along the Columbia River. In 1999 when we made this trip, we didn’t travel this route—think we went I-90 out of Washington. Saw lots of...

Aug 19, 2011 - Pendleton, OR, USA
We started our drive home to Florida today. We drove 362 miles and we still had scenery to enjoy. When we arrived in Pendleton we decided to ride around town. We went to the Pendleton Mills which makes beautiful wool blankets. We arrived too late for the last tour of the factory but not too late to go to the mill store. We bought an Indian design wool throw for our couch at home. When we drove through the town we found a farmer's market with some craft fare. We bought corn, tomatoes, smoked salmon, huge cinnamin rolls, and some bluberry bread.

Aug 10, 2011 - Underground tour!
Since we decided to stay one more day and check out the town and find out why Pendleton was known as the entertainment capital of Eastern Oregon! We sign up for the underground tour. Pendleton has many underground tunnels under it. Started when Wells Fargo was tired of the being robbed when the train came into town and they had to take the money to the bank a block or two away. So they got the idea to put a tunnel from the rail to the bank! Then everyone else thought it was good idea too. We toured a small part of it. Saw some of the...

Aug 9, 2011 - Rodeo Roundup
We arrived here after a 3 hr drive from Clarkston. The drive was on mostley 2 lane road thru rolling hills full of wheat fields one after another. Lots of small farm towns too. I thought the mid west was our bread basket! We had planned to just stay the 1 day but there seems to be a lot to see here. Pendleton was once a wild frontier town where anything could happen and did. But today it known for the Pendleton round up rodeo that runs for a week long event. We stopped in the Elks lodge here, to get the scoop on what goes on! The roundup is...

Jul 18, 2011 - Pendleton Underground
From John Day we headed to Pendleton. We spoke with one man at the Elks Lodge and he went on and on about the passes – how steep, narrow, drop-offs, etc. So I was really spooked about going. Some on-line friends got me calmed down and I vowed I would not freak out nor would I snivel. And I didn't. Besides – they weren't nearly as bad as some we have already gone over. So there! Macho man!! :D Years ago, when I was in 4-H, I also sewed in contests. One I really loved was the Make it Yourself with Wool Contest. At one time my prize was...

Sep 25, 2010 - On The Road Again - To Pendleton, OR
September 25, 2010 Today we ended 17 days of waiting for the parts to come in for the RV, and we are on the road again. We had expected to be on our way the 23rd, but the shipper in Seattle did not have a big enough truck to get the cap in, so he just let it sit, not bothering to let the RV dealer know, until he called. It was then to be sent the 24th but didn’t get to the RV dealer until 4 pm. They worked on our trailer until midnight last night and had it ready by noon today. They went out of their way to help us and although I was...

Sep 8, 2010 - Wild Horses couldn't drag us . . . .
It’s taken me a while to figure out what to write about Pendleton. It wasn’t one of our better stops – there are things to see, but none of them terribly exciting -- and our stay turned into another chapter in what our friend Fred likens to the Perils of Pauline. The drive down from Walla Walla (a 40 mile drive – one of our shortest travel days) was pretty interesting – more rolling hills, with a patchwork of golden yellow fields of dried straw alternating with fields that had been plowed under and were dark brown from the rain that had...

Sep 6, 2010 - Pendleton, OR
Today was a letdown for me. I chose US 395 because I thought it was a nice rural road. It started off that way but it only lasted a few miles. Almost all day we were on 4-lane divided highways with hundreds of other people. As far as I was concerned it was a zoo. We had to drive through downtown Spokane. We got faked out by their traffic signs and ended up on a street that was totally torn up. I had to crawl down it a half mile until I could turn off. I took US 395 to avoid the Interstate system. I ended up driving 70+ miles on I-90, 30+...

Jul 14, 2010 - Touring the Underground Streets in Pendleton
Today we were able to take a tour of the underground streets in Pendleton built in the late 1800's. The underground street contained a meat market, laundry, Shamrock cardroom, jails, Chinese living quarters. A problem existed trying to get exports to the barges before they were stolen so an underground system was set up to allow everything to be moved undergroud so they would not be stolen. The streets were set up meeting all needs. Very interesting to see. Above the underground was a hotel that the owner needed money and rented it to a...

Jul 13, 2010 - Moving onto Pendleton, Oregon
Today we traveled 90 miles Back on the road on our way to Pendleton, we will be camping at the Wildhorse Casino in a really nice campground. The casino is within walking distance. YAHOO. We passed by the barges on their way to the Pacific. After we arrived and set up in the campground we went to The Pendleton Mill, for a tour of the factory. Always interesting to see how different items are manfactured. And what beautiful wool blankets. Nothing matches our style, but really nice.
