A short but spectacular drive along the Columbia River valley brought us to Memaloose, a campground about an hour east of Portland overlooking the river. The expressway followed the river and the eastern end had steep hillsides full of dry, golden grass. There was just enough space for the expressway and a set of railroad tracks. The land was a big contrast to the blue water of the river. There were few towns and little agriculture, but as we neared the campground, dark green firs dotted the golden hillsides and signs of civilization...

Sep 12, 2012 - Columbia River Gorge

We arrived Saturday Sept 8 and are staying at Memaloose State Park near a little town Mosier. We are between the better known cities of Hood River and The Dalles. The park is very nice but a little wierd in that you get here through a highway rest stop. It's because the Interstate hugs the river most places so there is very little access to the river because of the highway. Our park is on the Columbia River so it is between the highway and the river. When we go westbound on the interstate we have to pass the park and turn around at next...
