May 15, 2012 - Memaloose State Park, OR

We arrived at Memaloose State Park about noon after a 74 mile ride along the Columbia River. The park is located approximately half way between the towns of Hood River and The Dalles. This is an absolutely gorgeous state park, the only downside it is located alongside I84 so we get some freeway noise, but not to bad. It is also very windy here, the winds from the Pacific sweep inland through the Columbia River Gorge, sometimes there have been 40 mph gusts. We have seen large whitecaps on the river and many wind surfers.

Among our favorite places is the Columbia River Gorge between Washington and Oregon, so on our trip back to Washington from Central Oregon, we stopped for a couple days at this park on the Oregon side of the river between The Dalles and Hood River. The park is right beside I-84 – in fact, you enter it through a rest area at about milepost 73 westbound. However, as soon as you drop down the hill toward the river into the park, it feels as if you have indeed left the interstate rat race. We had a fun day exploring the portion of the Columbia...

Jul 15, 2007 - Memaloose State Park

Wow, the drive to this park was awesome! Don chose this park so that we can tour the dam and fishery at The Dalles. Highway I-84 in Oregon is mainly along the Columbia River and as we were driving along the highway, it was an incredible site when all of a sudden Mt. Hood appeared above the river. It is quite breezy along the river, so it wasn't surprising to see windsurfers hopping the waves. What I had never expected to see were kite boarders. Funny thing was, I had just seen several of these on one of Paula Deen's shows (FYI for the...
