Oct 27, 2014 - McMinnville, OR

October 27, 2014 Even though it is not supposed to rain today we decided to stay in McMinnville rather than go to the coast. McMinnville is a sweet little wine country town with lots of healthy/organic foods, coffee roasters, more wine tasting shops than we recall and interesting restaurants. We got some coffee and window shopped for a while before going to Evergreen Air and Space Museum which is walking distance from camp. We had heard that Evergreen had gone through bankruptcy and were concerned about the museum. The docents said it is...

October 26, 2014 Raining again but that is what we expected. We are headed for McMinnville the home of Evergreen Aviation and Nick’s Italian Café which we will be visiting for the third time! The route is primarily SR 99 that goes through Newberg and Dundy which is the heart of the Willamette Wine Valley. We did not plan to do much of any wine tasting but did stop at Chehalem, wines we have liked in the past. Harry Peterson-Nedry, founder provides a plethora of information about all of the wine he produces (a booklet of charts, graphs and...

Jun 4, 2014 - Evergreen Aviation Museum

We had heard from several people at the Elks lodge that we would enjoy this aviation museum, and found out that it is where the Spruce Goose is housed. So off we went to see it. It was about 25 to the north west, amid farm and ranch land. We passed many vineyards and orchards as well as a huge Christmas Tree Farm. We got stuck following behind a farm truck full of something like wheat or hay and we were being rained on by what was flying off the top. We backed off and waited for a chance to pass him. The aviation museum was filled with so...

Jul 31, 2013 - McMinnville, Oregon

We left Kelso, heading South for McMinnville. We were diverting to Camping World to pick up a new convertor for our trailer. We phoned ahead to confirm there was a convertor put aside for us. Traffic was excellent heading into Oregon and we pulled in Camping World in Hillsboro, Or. After buying the convertor we couldn't help but poke our noses in a few 5th wheels and a new class A Winnebago. Amazing the things money can do to a travel trailer and motor home. Fred wasn't convinced that the Cairns trailer needed a new convertor and if it did...

Summer Trip 2013

Oct 31, 2012 - Astoria to McMinnville

October 30, 2012 Awoke to very heavy rain and were in no hurry to get on the road. Did some spade work on our remodel (got our permit today), sat in the lounge and took off up the coast on Hwy 101 to Astoria about 11:30. Astoria is a port town and in the rain/fog we did little more than drive through town and buy gas. That is unfortunate as there were walks and visits we could have done . Headed back down the coast on Hwy 101. It was VERY windy and there were sheets of rain. There are lots of small towns along the way with little shops or...

Oct 31, 2012 - McMinnville

October 31, 2012 Another wet morning and it is All Hallows Eve. We walked to the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum. What a magnificent and well maintained facility that Hertz has even put a small rental car booth with a few cars. Not sure what that is about as this is not a commercial style operation. This is an extremely well run and obvious militarily compassionate organization whose multiple building dedications have been on D-Day. Evergreen is a private global aviation freight and service company that services airlines and the...

Aug 24, 2012 - Last day in McMinnville

Yesterday we drove to a nearby outlet mall where Adele found a couple of pairs of pants. Fred found out how great it is to have MIFI available anywhere, anytime, as he checked things out on the laptop while patiently waiting in the truck. After leaving the shopping centre the GPS took us on a different route back to the campground. We thought it was interesting, and ended up at a little river ferry. We were first in line and Fred faked like he knew what he was doing because all the directions from the ferry staff were by way of bells and...

Aug 22, 2012 - McMinnville

We took a last look at that impressive view of the ocean in Winchester Bay and headed inland to McMinnville. The trip took a total of four hours. Once we arrived, we set up camp, had a light lunch and got back into the truck to do a little sightseeing. We travelled north towards Portland stopping in Tigard to do a little shopping. On the way back, we landed up in traffic which looked as though it was from an accident so we set off through the country roads and came across vineyard after vineyard. This area is definitely wine country!...

Aug 8, 2012 - McMinnville, Mount Ranier, Washington

Sorry it has been awhile since I made an entry. I had used most of my data for the month and had to wait until a new pay period started. We arrived in McMinnville OR on July 20th. I did some wine tasting and we went to the Air Museum. That was quite interesting. The Spruce Goose is there, and Chuck enjoyed the space shuttles and old airplanes. We left there on the 23rd and headed for Packwood WA to hike Mt. Rainier. Chucks back was feeling much better but we decided not to push it and just went on 2 short hikes. It is still one of my...

Jul 9, 2012 - Exploring the "Spruce Goose"

Our neighbor here at Phoenix RV Park is a continual source of information on things to see and do in the local area. Apparently, Phil comes here every summer for the past decade and has come to know this area like it’s a second home. This time his recommendation took us to the northwest, approximately 30 miles to McMinnville, or the home of the Evergreen Aviation Museum and the home of the famed “Spruce Goose”. There are actually two separate museums; one an aviation museum and the other a space museum. Again, another spectacular drive...
