Sep 24, 2014 - 9 years and counting

Today Blaze and celebrated our 9 year wedding anniversary by swimming in the ocean and having chicken curry at our new favorite Indonesian Wurang (restaurant). We found the place by accident yesterday as the beach shack we had eaten lunch at the day before wasn't serving food as their chef never showed up. We walked down a paved road for a little way and found a small hotel and restaurant that looked promising but nobody was there. We turned to leave and a Indonesian man ran after us and asked in English "what you need?". We replied that...

Sep 22, 2014 - Lazy Americans

Today we got up and went down to the beach to secure our place in the shade with our bean bag loungers. We love those loungers and we have decided to replace our couch at home with two of them. It will be perfect but awkward if we ever have guests over. Too bad for you hypothetical guests! We marched back up the 56 steps to our "villa" to join the other guests for breakfast around the pool. The setting looked like it was out of a magazine spread with canopied tables draped in white cloth like you would see in a Calvin Klien perfume...

Sep 21, 2014 - Island of Lombok

We left our hotel on Gili Air this morning at 7:30 and walked 10 minutes to the harbor to catch a public boat to the island of Lombok. We paid our $1.90 and got in line with a bunch of locals and their cargo (chickens etc.). We waded into the ocean, but just up to our ankles, to get on the boat. The seating was a wooded bench on each side of the boats perimeter and we held our packs in our laps for the 20 minute trip. Once we landed at the port of Bengsal in Lombok, we met our driver Herman who would take us to southern Lombok to stay at a...

Sep 19, 2014 - Last day in Gili Air

Blaze and I are both feeling much better and so today, our last day on the island, we decided to walk around the perimeter of most of it. This can be done in about two hours - its not that big a place. The western side of the island is less populated than where we are on the Eastern side and the beaches there are cleaner and more natural. We could see the island of Meno Air from the west coast and then the island of Lombok from the South. We will take a public boat to Lombok tommorrow at 8:30 am which from the looks of it may be a little...

Sep 17, 2014 - A better day today

I had some semi -solid food for breakfast and felt I had turned the corner to better health. After eating, we decided to upgrade to a better room that had hot water and better A/C. The little luxuries of life become important when you been under the weather. It felt great to take a hot shower. We wandered into town and found a beach cabana to sit in at look at the ocean. We ordered some sodas and then we just watched the world go by. We decided to get massages and found a place that specializes in traditional massages which turned out to be...

Sep 16, 2014 - Not so friendly a welcome to Gili Air

The fast boat shuttle to Gili Air went pretty smoothly with only one person getting sea sick and it wasn't one of the Gallingers! We arrived in Gili Air yesterday at 11am and walked from the boat landing (really just the beach) to our hotel. There are no cars on any of the Gili islands so you either walk, ride a bike, or take a bemo which is a horse drawn carriage. All the horses wear sleigh bells so you can hear the bemos coming but it keeps making us think of Santa every time we hear it. We settled into our hotel and then the manager...

Sep 15, 2014 - Liberty and goodbye to Bali

We got up early on Monday to meet our driver for a snorkeling trip to the sunken US Liberty cargo ship. This ship was sunk by a Japanese destroyer in WWII and the hulk rests conviently close to the shore in a town north of here called Trawangen. This town is focused on diving mostly due to the shipwreck. The sea was rough yesterday and the beach at Trawangan is really rocky (big rocks) so getting in/out of the ocean there is difficult and a little scary. Once in the water, we swam out 100 yards until we could make out the wreck below us. It...

Sep 13, 2014 - Laundry in a grocery bag

Today was laundry day for we Gallingers and after discovering that our bathroom sink was un-stoppable, I found a plastic grocery bag with minimal holes and set to washing our clothes. The end result is acceptable but i wouldn't say they are "clean" exactly. It's the best I could do in a plastic bag washing machine. We used the clothesline we bought at REI to hang our underwear from the front porch railing for all to see. Good that things dry fast here. We then did our usual routine of snorkeling followed by some time relaxing by the pool....

Sep 13, 2014 - Scooter

We did it. We ride a scooter in Bali and put our motorcycle class skills to use. We didn't intend to ride a scooter but it bacame a reality due to a very generous security guard and some communication breakdown. We originally asked the guard at the front desk how to get to a silver shop in town whose sign I saw from the ride into town yesterday on our drive with Adang. The guard said its too far to walk and that we should just take his scooter. We insisted that we couldn't take his only mode of transportation all the while he insists that...

Sep 12, 2014 - Tour of Eastern Bali sites

We met our driver (real name is Adang) this morning at 8 am to start a tour of some of the main sites in Eastern Bali. Adang started going south down the coast road toward Amapura where there is a huge outdoor market that sells anything you would need. The coast is beautiful with so many views of the little fishing villages that dot the coastline. We saw entire coves filled with handmade fishing boats each with outriggers and sails. The sails, when in use, make a colorful panorama in contrast to the deep blue ocean. Adang is my new favorite...

Sep 11, 2014 - R&R in Amed

Blaze and I spent the day relaxing by the pool where despite wearing 50 SPF and sitting in the shade, I still managed to get sunburned. We had breakfast at the hotel and we picked something called Flaffle which turned out to be a toast turnover with fruit on the inside. Odd but not bad. They made us fresh juice that had watermelon, papaya, mango and banana. It was delicious as was the coffee! We relaxed by the pool until it was time for lunch at which time we ordered club sandwiches Bali stlyle (with chicken and boiled egg). We snorkled...

Sep 10, 2014 - Bali!

We said goodbye to Mike and Monica this morning at 7 am and took a taxi to the airport to begin our Indonesia adventure. We landed in Despenar Bali at 2 pm and then waited in line at immigration for 1 hour and 15 very long minutes. We have no idea why it was taking so long but it was excruciating as we had t had anything to eat since 6 am. We were over zealous in getting rid of all our Malaysian currency at the currency exchange and then no one would take Visa at the restaurants in the airport or on the plane. Stupid rookie mistake! So,...
