We have spent the last 2 days at Crater Lake. It is the deepest lake in the United States (1,943 ft.). It was Mt. Mazama, a 12,000-foot peak, until it erupted about 7,700 years ago. The magma chamber was emptied and the volcano collapsed leaving a huge caldera. The eruption was so big that ash was spread 6 inches deep over 5,000 square miles. It produced 150 times more ash than the Mt. St. Helens eruption. Slowly the caldera filled with rainwater and snow. We drove around the lake, stopping often to take short hikes and pictures.
