May 22, 2015 - Flowers and waterfalls

It is springtime in this part of Oregon and the flowers are blooming. Florence had their Rhody (Rhododendron) Festival and Keizer had their Iris Festival – both on the same weekend. We decided to hang out for nine days on the coast in Florence and use it as a base to explore the surrounding area. We really lucked out on the weather! Although not bright and sunny, it was good enough to get out and become a tourist. No raincoats were needed! On our hike near Carl Washburne State Park, we enjoyed a walk along the beach, then up through a Sitka...

Apr 7, 2015 - Journey's end

12038 miles later, the nearly 5 month journey ends in Forest Grove. Was a much nicer drive up the coast today. All in all a nice journey, interesting adventures, new friends along the way and a continuing passion for the blue highways of America. “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived”. – Henry David Thoreau

Jan 14, 2013 - And So It Begins......

Well, today the journey begins. After picking up a pair of new eyeglasses, making a trip to the storage unit, getting gas, going to the bank, saying goodbye to Mom, and dislodging various frozen parts of the trailer, departure occured around 1:00 p.m. from Forest Grove. Due to the later departure, the travel day was a bit shorter than usual, and a desire NOT to travel at night, my overnight is in the parking lot of the Myrtle Creek Elks Lodge - nothing pretty, but economical. No hookups, so am dry-camping and putting the solar panels to...

Nov 16, 2010 - We're off

Day 1: Forest Grove to Weed, CA. Well, we finally made it. Sort of mixed feelings today, as I leave Mom behind (we waved at each other when I went past her window on my way out of the parking lot), and head over to pick up Ryan. Ryan had to work this morning, so I drove to a point across the street from his complex and waited for him to join me. I'm glad he was able to join me during the first few days of this adventure, as it helped to take my mind off of Melinda not being there. I also think it actually helped with this transition by...

Jul 2, 2008 - Visiting Alan and Carol in the Portland area

Portland Oregon area.(Alan and Carol’s) We stayed with Alan(Bruce's cousin) and Carol for several days. Bruce and Alan have only seen each other a couple of times in the past so it was great spending some time together and for us all to get to know each other. Alan works in the semiconductor equipment industry. Carol teaches drawing and gave Erik and Carly some pointers while we were there. She also rescues wayward, injured, or lost animals. Alan and Bruce compared notes on making home-brew as they both have this hobby. A funny coincidence...
