Aug 23, 2015 - Crater Lake, Oregon

Crater Lake area has been having fires over the last few weeks. The campground informed us before we arrived that they were open but the north entrance to Crater Lake was closed due to the fires. We traveled through some smokey areas to get the the campground but it was pretty clear at the campground the day we arrived. The next day we drove to some of the many waterfalls in the area. We took Trip with us and got some good photos. That evening the smoke settled in around the campground and there was ash in the air but the forest service...

Jun 10, 2015 - Diamond Lake, OR

June 9, 2015 - Tuesday Arrived at Diamond Lake RV Resort today about 11:45 am after a nice, short drive from Bend. The drive was fairly easy, but as we left the outskirts of Bend, it started to rain. Not much at first, just big drops every 5 seconds, or so. It began to increase until we had a steady rain coming down. Roads are mostly two-lane, but well paved and fairly straight. The roads wind through stands of Fir, Pine and Cedar which line the roads. Almost feels like you are driving through tunnels! RV park is nice. Sites are wide and...

Sep 1, 2013 - Oregon!!

Typing this on my phone because the campground doesn't have wifi. This also means no pics other than my iPhone ones. Hopefully I'll get some connectivity at some point tomorrow. I encountered several different landscapes on today's drive. First, green rolling hills similar to PA. Lots of cows and this thing called a cow guard every so many miles. It looked like a grate. Not sure if the cows can't cross it? I did encounter a couple of cows in the road though. The semi in front of me blew his horn and scared them off before I could get a...

Aug 12, 2013 - Diamond Lake, OR (Crater Lake)

We are camped near the shores of Diamond Lake which is huge. Crater Lake is only about 15 miles from here (Park entrance is 5 miles). So our plan is to drive around the lake Wednesday and have a better look at it. Last year when we were here, the roads around the lake and the north entrance road (the one closest to us) were closed due to snow. 8/13/13, Tuesday. We took a leisurely drive around Crater Lake today. There are many turnouts along the 33 mile long rim road offering phenomenal views of Crater Lake. We started at the North Entrance...

2013 USA Trip

Jul 5, 2013 - Diamond Lake, Oregon

We traveled from Shingletown, CA to Diamond Lake, Oregon on July 2nd. The route was west from Shingletown to Redding, CA where we turned north on I-5; we turned off I-5 onto US 97 going northeast through Klamath Falls, OR, then continuing north on US 97 to the intersection with Oregon state highway 138 where we turned west to Diamond Lake. The Diamond Lake RV Park is located at the southeast end of Diamond Lake, a separate entity from the Diamond Lake Resort, located about 2.5 miles farther east on the Diamond Lake Road. The total trip was...

Sep 14, 2012 - Redding CA - Heading Home (boo-hoo!!)

Got packed up and then took the bikes to the east side of Diamond Lake, here the bike trail starts of in the campground, and continues, and continues, and….well after 2.5 miles we get to the end of the campground and the start of the bike trail, but alas our time is limited so we have to turn around and head back to make the check out time. It is warm up here, and as we head back down the hill towards 97, a strange thing happens it starts getting cooler. Also today a lot more smoke and haze so visibility is not like it was during Crater...

Sep 13, 2012 - Diamond Lake Oregon - Near Crater Lake

Crater lake day. Got up and headed for the big crater, cold here in Diamond lake land, but at the north rim of Crater it was already 66 degrees, no wind and you could see all the way to Shasta. Took the loop starting east, not much traffic until we got to the Rim facilities on the south end. We ate lunch, then toured (a short bike ride) around the rim area on the bikes. The south area had a lot more traffic (also interesting that now we are seeing families and younger folks whereas on the North and East side all we saw were the retired...

Sep 12, 2012 - Diamond Lake Oregon - Near Crater Lake

Wake up and get the trailer buttoned up by 8:30 and decide that instead of goofing off for a while (it was really cold today 42 degrees) we would just head out. On the road by 9am and heading east on 58. Another gorgeous ride, with one small construction issue as they are rebuilding the road inside the tunnel and have it down to a single lane and 24 hour flagging (we saw on the sign boards that they close the road at night to work on it). Then we head down hill along some very straight plateaus, we almost hit a large fox and then 2 deer,...

Jul 11, 2012 - On the Road to Crater Lake

It’s time to leave the Oregon coast – I have really enjoyed being on the coast and seeing all the beautiful sites. We are moving on to visit Crater Lake National Park. The park is southeast from where we are on the coast. We are traveling on state highways, so it is slower than being on an interstate, plus there is the ever-present road construction going on. The drive is very scenic and the North Umpqua River is flowing alongside the road for a long way. It is flowing down from the mountains, so it is clear and tumbling over boulders...

Weather Forecast: 90% Chance of Rain We drive two miles up the road to the marina. We rent a boat for half a day. There is a ten mile an hour speed limit on the lake. There are no jet skis or water skiers. There are many fishing boats. Unfortunately, fishing is slow. There are no bites. We only see two small rainbow trout caught. We have the boat back by 12:30. It is not raining but it was cloudy all day. It would not have been a good day to go to Crater Lake. It was a good day on the water. Tomorrow we will go exploring. Campground:...

We make a right out of the campground. We go over the bridge into Gold City. We make a right onto Route 234. We are relocating today. We are back on the Rogue Umpqua Scenic Byway. We follow the Rogue River. It is daylight. We can see where we are going. We turn onto Route 62. As we near Shady Cove, we can see the sections of the river that we fished yesterday. We see boats and anglers along the shore. We enter a National Forest and stop at the Mt Mazama viewpoint. Seven thousand seven hundred years ago, the volcano erupted. What is left is...
