Aug 16, 2011 - Coos Bay, OR, USA

We left the Diamond Lake RV Park which was a great campground with lots of trees and headed for Coos Bay, Oregon. We stayed at the Mill Casino RV Park located on the bay. We ate dinner at the casino and the meal was one of the best we have had. They did not get much money from us as I only put one dollar in a machine to try to figure out how it worked. I ended up with 19 cents of the dollar and still didn't really understand their system. This morning we took the casino shuttle to the Shore Acres State Park. It is perched on a scenic high...

Aug 16, 2011 - Coos Bay/North Bend, Oregon

We traveled 168 miles from Crater Lake to Coos Bay in North Bend, Oregon. We went from an altitude of 5312 feet to 36 feet. We only stayed one night in Coos Bay at the Mill Casino and RV Park. Our campsite was located right on the bay and the scenery was nice. Several of us ate at the Plank House Restaurant at the Casino and it was very good. We did a little gambling at the slot machines but we had a hard time figuring out how the machines worked. We didn't loose alot of money but we didn't win anything either. In the morning we took a...

Jun 18, 2011 - Sightseeing

Thursday night we went to eat at the Waterfront Depot. The Crab Encrusted Halibut with sweet chili sauce was so good!! Ron didn't want to swallow as the taste would go away and I wondered if it would be tacky to lick the plate. Friday was our southern sightseeing tour. We just headed down the 101. We decided that we would stop when we got hungry and find somewhere to eat and then we would head back north to our campground. We would note things we wanted to see on the way back or stop on the way down if they were easier to reach from the...

May 6, 2011 - On the Oregon Coast

Today we slept in then took a ride to the beaches south of Coos Bay. The garmin took us the long way around but it was our fault for listening to her when we knew the better way. When we finally got to the coast, it was beautiful. There are rocky cliff going down to the ocean which is pounding against them creating huge sprays of surf. The rock formations go out into the water. There are interesting trees on the cliffs leaning from years of wind. We even saw a whale outside the waves moving north. He never came far enough out of the water...

West Coast Trip 2011

May 5, 2011 - Headed North with Good Friends

After a fun dinner at Shamus T-bone in Carlotta on Wednesday eve, we were up early to head north. The weather was good for traveling and the trip was smooth to our destination. We enjoyed a lunch near the Trees of Mystery, and determined that we would return (weather permitting) to wander thru the Trees of Mystery. The campground for our next week is eight miles east of Crescent City in the ‘burg of Hiouchi, CA. This is the area of Jed Smith state park and the landscape is full of gorgeous redwood trees. The campground is lovely, with...

We take a slight detour north of Orik,CA to take the Scenic Highway through the National Redwood Forest. We are once again amazed at the size of these giants, especially their height. It is probably 10 degrees cooler in the redwood forest because so little sun gets to the forest floor. After the redwood forest the road goes right along the coast. We stopped in...

West Coast Trip 2011

Oct 28, 2010 - Coos Bay

Pulled out of Florence around noon and headed for Coos Bay which was about 50 miles from where we were. The sky was gray but the rain had let up so we decided to take off. We were so far up in the mountains that it felt like we were in the clouds. Came down the mountain to a large bay area to a town called Reedsport. Went on to Winchester. The forests are full of fiddle neck ferns and rhododendrons plants that grow wild here. I am also noticing some palm trees. Headed on in to Coos Bay and found an RV park right on the marina. There was an...

Aug 19, 2010 - On to Oregon!

Today was moving day--about 130 miles up US 101 to Coos Bay, Oregon. We had to say goodbye to the beautiful redwoods. But, we said hello to the grand Oregon coast. US 101 goes from cliff hanging near the coast to over the coastal mountains for a short distance. As we drove north, the weather cleared and the beaches, rocks and waves just got prettier. When we got to Coos Bay,the wind was about 20 mph from the northwest and the temp was about 60! Got to love it! In Coos Bay, we stopped at the Visitor's Center to get the schedule of activities...

Jul 24, 2010 - Kayak Eel Lake

We drove about 15 miles north of Coos Bay to kayak 10 Mile Lake. The sheriff met us and informed us we had to have the kayaks inspected for mollusks before launching and that we had to obtain a special license. After completing a page of paperwork and a kayak inspection we decided it would be better to change our destination to a quieter lake. Guns and sheriffs make us nervous-and besides, it was foggy and the start of a huge bass fishing tourney there. We envisioned being caught in the cross hairs of bass boats charging to their fishing...

Jul 19, 2010 - Mt. Shasta to Coos Bay,OR

We reluctantly departed Mt. Shasta for Cos Bay,OR at 8AM. The drive was through spectacular scenery. It was 250 miles but took over six hours because the last 70 miles were constant twists and turns There was a severe accident near the end of our journey which closed the road and necessitated an impossible detour directed by the police down a steep and narrow farm road with no shoulder on the right and a string of traffic stopped in the opposite direction. I inadvertantly caught my left hub cap on a vehicle on the stopped traffic line. I...
