May 24, 2017 - Long borring drive and Capulin Volcano National Monument

A very long boring day of driving in Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma. We did stop and go for a hike at Capulin Volcano National Monument. We hiked around the cone of an extinct volcano and into the crater. Except for my damaged old dad who whined about his knee and couldn't keep up.

Sep 20, 2016 - AR to Oklahoma

We left a little earlier, before 9 a.m. traveling along Interstate 40 all the way, except for going around Oklahoma City. We are now in Cherokee and Potawatomi Nation territory. There were several Indian Casinos along the way. We crossed Lake Eufaula, part of the Canadian River which is the longest tributary of the Arkansas River. It is about 906 miles long, starting in Colorado and traveling through New Mexico, the Texas Panhandle, and Oklahoma. We passed a sign marking “America’s Corner” where the major interstates I-35, I-44 and I-40 –...

Apr 27, 2009 - Day Trois

Greeting from Oklahoma! Where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain! And the wavin' wheat can sure smell sweet. Hmmm, I just googled the lyrics to that, and I'm suddenly a bit disconcerted because I've already driven across the better part of the state, and I have yet to see even ONE STALK of wheat! Tell me the musicals don't lie. I mean, what's next? Was the Phantom of the Opera, in fact, NOT inside my mind?! This morning, Otto "Ja, Baby" Mueller and I departed the thriving metropolis of Lonoke, Arkansas, desperately trying to contain...

Apr 26, 2009 - Day 6

This could be a historic day with a possible outbreak of tornadic activity. The NWS in Norman has issued a High Risk update for all of OK. This happens only about once a year. We hit the ground running today, tracking a supercell around noon. We saw some great wall clouds but no funnels. We left that storm and headed southwest OK past the Wichita mountains to wait for further development. Unfortunately, the outbreak never happened. We did track a few cells and drove right under rotating wall clouds which was a real thrill! The adrenaline...

Nov 4, 2007 - To Benson - Day 2

Sunday, November 4, 2007 Daylight Savings Ends The drive across Missouri was lovely - a beautiful state. The trees still had most of their leaves and though the colors had begun to mute, the sight was still very enjoyable. Early afternoon we crossed the state line into Oklahoma. We realized it was going to be about dinner time when we got to OKC, so we called Randall & Angie to see if they could meet us for dinner and a quick visit. They could, and it was great to see them again. After dinner we drove on to Weatherford, OK before stopping...

Mar 16, 2007 - Tumbling Tumbleweeds

I have now posted photos on yesterday's entry. From WalMart parking lot in Weatherford, Oklahoma, just off of I-40 82 miles east of the Texas / Oklahoma border. 357 miles later (102 miles across New Mexico, 177 miles across the north Texas Panhandle & 78 miles in OK), & we meet again here at the coffee pot. Today was our longest day yet, in miles traveled. It was a relatively easy drive, straight across I-40. Winds were minimal for most of the day & the scenery was changing significantly as we came eastward. After leaving the campground...
