Friday we spent the day at Chickasaw Recreation Area where the Arbuckle Lake is, so first we walked a trail by the lake it is so colourful there with loads of spring flowers in bloom plus lots of different bugs as you will see in the photos. It is a very large area so back in the car to park near another trail where we hiked from Bromide Hill (where it overlooks the mountains) to see the Bison, it was about a 3-4 mile loop walk, we saw about 10 Bison with 2 calves. We came home about 4pm for a couple of hours then drove out to another part...

May 19, 2013 - Turner Falls & Gene Autry
Saturday off to Turner Falls- Turner Falls Park, the oldest park in Oklahoma, has received national publicity and has served as a classroom for the naturalist with its distinction as one of three geological windows into our past. The other two sites include the Grand Canyon and the Black Hills of South Dakota. Many springs from the world famous Arbuckle Mountains form Honey Creek, which cascades down a seventy-seven (77) foot fall to a natural swimming pool, making the majestic Turner Falls the largest waterfall in Oklahoma. The park is...

Oct 29, 2011 - A Day of Reading
– Woke up rather early and went out and sat on the couch to watch the quiet park. It was cold; frost was on my truck’s windshield. Water out of the faucet was cold as if it had been in the refrigerator. Fog was rising from the lake. Canadian geese swam by – I guess the water is actually warmer than the air but it just seems too cold for a swim. The early morning light is struggling to find its way through the trees; it occasionally succeeds with a streak of bright. This was the perfect time to catch up on my blog. I have been having some...

Oct 27, 2011 - Two Museums in One Day
Woke up to a rainy morning; soon after I got up I got a call from Mrs. Smith and the camp staff had decided that I did not need to try to walk down to the fishing area in the slippery rain. They assigned me to going to the Children's Museum with half of the campers and chaperones. This year we have so many chaperones that we never have to worry about something going undone and someone being unsupervised. The children love the museum. They have a spectacular dinosaur/fossil display room. Additionally, they have a room to teach the children...

Oct 26, 2011 - I Got to Fish Too
The weather forecast for today is for a front to blow in, the temperatures to drop, and for a possibility of rain. I stuffed by backpack with a sweatshirt and a rain poncho, just in case. I arrived at Camp in time for breakfast. Then, I went down to the fishing area; all of the stuff was just as I had left it. Today I will need to put it away to avoid the possible rain storms. I only have three groups today, which will give me some time off to pack up the equipment and get to the Outdoor Strings Concert in plenty of time. Just as we were...

Oct 25, 2011 - A Day of Fishing
The late game and the early alarm came too close together. I am not an early-riser and I was tired. But, the thoughts of another fun day with the kids got me up. I was on the road by 7:45, thinking I could get there in time for the last part of the breakfast line. I had gotten my mail the day before and I needed to call my insurance company to get them to take my home owner’s fee off of my bill. I decided to call at 8:00 while I was on the road. Good idea/bad idea. I got the problem fixed, but I was so busy driving down the road, I missed...

Oct 24, 2011 - First Day at Camp Goddard
– I woke extra early, looked at the clock – it was 5:45. If I were at home in Garland and I was getting ready for camp, Ann would have already come by to pick me up and I’d be helping get all of the equipment loaded on the buses. But, this year, I just turned over and went back to sleep. I’m not going to get to camp until about 11:00. I left my campsite about 10:20 and drove to Camp Goddard; it’s about a 25-minute drive. I got there in time to join everyone at the Chapel for sack-lunch time and the review of the rules. As I walked up,...

Oct 23, 2011 - Headed to Oklahoma
The alarm went off several times this morning and my plans for going to the 8:00 service at First Baptist of Wiley turned into the 8:45 service and finally, into the 10:45 service. I had seen their sign on Hgwy. 78 as I drove north to my campsite; recently they began four service Sundays – 8:00, 8:45, 10:45 and 11:35. I had not been to a large church in quite a while. I parked and went in – found a seat with the help of a friendly usher. People were very nice during the “hand-shaking” time. I was amazed to find that several people noticed I...
