Apr 1, 2020 - Captain's Log - 2020.04.01

Change happens… It’s amazing how things have changed in the world, in this country, and in our own lives since I posted my last Log entry. Sorry that it’s been so long since I sent out a new edition of my “Captain’s Log” but for a while, things were pretty routine with nothing significant to report. The last time I sent out an update was on December 25, 2019. We were hanging out on our leased lot in Benson, Arizona where we had gotten involved in our volunteer activities and were planning to stay there until mid-March. We even had a chance...

Feb 2, 2020 - February 2, 2020 – Stillwater, Oklahoma

February 2, 2020 – Stillwater, Oklahoma Well, the groundhog saw his shadow so there will be 6 more weeks of winter. Just to prove that point, while it was 76 today and tomorrow is supposed to be 70, there is supposed to be 1”-2” of snow Tuesday night into Wednesday. I am going to head to Texas tomorrow. I want to get out ahead of the storm. Also Patsy is leaving on Saturday for her trip to Egypt. I need to get out of her way so she can finish her preparations for that trip. I called Sue this evening, and she and her mother were having a...

Feb 1, 2020 - February 1, 2020 – Stillwater, Oklahoma

February 1, 2020 – Stillwater, Oklahoma Donnie had persuaded Guyla to clean out Donald’s room today. Patsy and I got our signals crossed because we thought they were going to call us as they left the house to go over there. So, we got there after most of the work was done. We did follow them back to the house and help unload. Afterwards, Connie, Debbie, Patsy and I sat and visited for an hour or so. Patsy and I had stopped at Red Rock and got some goodies. The rest of the day has been quiet. Patsy and I both took naps this afternoon. This...

Jan 31, 2020 - January 31, 2020 – Stillwater, Oklahoma

January 31, 2020 – Stillwater, Oklahoma A group of retired OSU librarians got together for lunch. It was fun to see folks that I used to work with. We were all glad that Guyla came. The talk was light and full of reminisces about our time working together which was good for Guyla. After lunch Patsy took her car to have the tires checked because the low pressure light was on. We also ran a couple of errands. We came home and both of us took naps. We went to Connie’s for supper. Debbie had brought salad and soup when she came up from Texas...

Jan 30, 2020 - January 30, 2020 – Stillwater, Oklahoma

January 30, 2020 – Stillwater, Oklahoma Donald’s funeral was this morning at 10. There was a small group of people, and the OSU library was well represented. Fortunately or unfortunately, like many of us in the older category, we have outlived our contemporaries so the attendance at the funeral was small. There was a volley at the beginning of the service and the playing of taps. That was quite moving. The service was simple but very nice. After the service, Connie, Debbie, Patsy and I climbed in the car to make the 2 hour drive to Fort...

Jan 29, 2020 - January 29, 2020 – Stillwater, Oklahoma

January 29, 2020 – Stillwater, Oklahoma I finished reading a mystery this morning. I liked the story, but I didn’t like any of the characters. Don’t think I’ll ready any more by that author. Debbie is coming from Texas today. She will stay with Connie. We’ll all get together for supper. Mary is not coming from Iowa. She has just had some surgery and can’t make the trip. We talked to Guyla and tried to get her to come for lunch, but she wanted to stay home because Donnie was going to call to tell her what time his plane was getting in. She...

Jan 28, 2020 - January 28, 2020 – Stillwater, Oklahoma

January 28, 2020 – Stillwater, Oklahoma This morning it was raining. It was a miserable day to be out. Guyla called about 9:30 and asked if Patsy and/or I could meet her at the assisted living facility to get the plants from Donald’s apartment. She was afraid that no one there would water them and that they would die. Patsy had other things to do so I met Guyla at Primrose. After we got the plants, we went to Red Rock to have a drink and something to eat. I was really bad and got an apricot turnover. We sat and visited for a while and...

Jan 27, 2020 - January 27, 2020 – Stillwater, Oklahoma

January 27, 2020 – Stillwater, Oklahoma Today was a waiting day. Patsy, Connie and I decided that we would get KFC for supper and have Guyla come over. She called to say that the kids had left about 2. We invited her over, and she came for supper. I met Patsy at Boom-a-rang’s for lunch so we could take advantage of their ½ price hamburgers on Monday. A couple of women that also volunteer at the Hospice Thrift Shop were also there. We all had the ½ price burgers. The funeral arrangements have been made. The service will be here in...

Jan 26, 2020 - January 26, 2020 – Stillwater, Oklahoma

January 26, 2020 – Stillwater, Oklahoma Guyla called last night about 10:30. Donald had died. Fortunately, Donnie and his family are still here so she has someone with her. They have a lot to attend to, so Patsy, Connie and I will just stay out of the way. I’m still really tired so will use today to try to get some rest. This afternoon, Patsy and I decided to get out and prowl around. We went to TJ Maxx where I found a couple of things. Other than that, it was a quiet day. jnd

Jan 25, 2020 - January 25, 2020 – Albuquerque, New Mexico to Stillwater, Oklahoma

January 25, 2020 – Albuquerque, New Mexico to Stillwater, Oklahoma I was driving out of the parking lot at 6 this morning. It was still dark, but I had a good night’s sleep so I was fresh. I figured that if I had to do any driving in the dark, I’d rather do it 1st thing in the morning while I was fresh. Fortunately, it was 4 lane highway all the way. New Mexico has a 75 mph speed limit as did Texas so I was able to set the cruise control on 77 and just go. It was an uneventful trip, and I got here at 4 p.m. central time. I made the 609...

Dec 25, 2019 - Captain's Log - Stillwater, OK to Benson, AZ

Captain’s Log: 2019.12.25 Christmas has arrived and Dee Dee and I are hanging out in our Earthship enjoying a peaceful morning. Black Friday is behind us and all of the shopping push and shove is over except for one more day…the day after Christmas when the stores will once again be flooded with people returning the gifts they received in hopes that they can score a better deal as the stores unload their remaining Christmas inventory. We will not get involved in that sport. The sun is just coming up spreading glory all around us. It’s been...
