Oct 31, 2017 - Haw Creek Falls
We slept in until about 7 this morning and then did NOT hurry. It was at least 10 am before we hit the road. We drove up into the Ozark National Forest where we saw a bit more color, but still not spectacular: lots of yellow and brown leaves and a few burgundy red ones. We also learned that when the road on the Arkansas state highway map changes from black to gray on paper, it changes from paved to dirt on the ground. Oct 30, 2017 - Away we go--like a herd of turtles!
We got up very early because Barbara had a dentist’s appointment at 9:00 am. Did the last frantic loading of the RV and headed out. Sam ran errands while Barbara got a tooth patched and then headed up the Talimena Drive into Oklahoma. It was beautiful in spite of very little fall color yet, and I think we passed a sum total of 4 cars getting to Highway 259 where we turned north. We rambled on up Oklahoma to Fort Smith where we crossed back into Arkansas started looking for a campground. Ended up at a Corps of Engineers campground right on...Jump to full entry
Jul 11, 2007 - Heading North (July 11 Part 2)
Day 14 - Wednesday (Continued) We also practiced something I learned yesterday: the courtesy pass. We were riding along behind a truck at 65 mph in 70 mph zone on a two lane (one each way) blacktop when the truck pulled onto the shoulder and kept doing 65. This is known as a courtesy pass and not only is legal, but expected, in Texas. Ray tells me when you leave Texas you often see signs in the neighboring states that say "Driving on the shoulder is not permitted". But the system makes sense to me with the sparse traffic.
