Jan 3, 2016 - Wichita Mountains NWR, Medicine Park, OK

Stardust Inn and the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge is a special place to us. We spend our 25th wedding anniversary there in July 2011. We have returned several times since then. Clark and Pegi Brown are the owners/inn keepers. We have become friends and usually enjoy a meal together at the Old Plantation Restaurant. They are special folks. We spent the day in the Wichita Mountains NWR. We did a 5.7 mile hike on the Bison Trail. Only saw one other person on the trail. We did see on bison which we stayed our distance from. This...

Aug 2, 2014 - Medicine Park, Oklahoma

Our journey continued east. We visited Blue Hole in Santa Rosa before leaving. The Blue Hole is an artesian well. It is a clear blue body of water with a constant 64 °F temperature and constant inflow of 3000 gallons per minute. While the surface is only 80 feet in diameter, it expands to a diameter of 130 feet at the bottom. We arrived in Medicine Park, Ok to the Stardust Inn. Our friends Clark and Pegi Brown are the owners of this wonderful restful place. We enjoyed sharing dinner with Clark and Pegi at the The Old Plantation Restaurant....

Oct 18, 2012 - Wichita Mountains NWR

A few more than 100 miles SW of Oklahoma City is Lawton. Just north of Lawton is Fort Sill and abutting the north border of Fort Sill is the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, one of our favorite places to visit. On the 18th, we arrived at the Refuge and a circus began. Every other time we'd been there, it was practically empty. Not this time. Oklahoma City schools were on Fall Break. Do kids ever go to school, anymore? We checked in at the campground gate and she told us to let her know what space we'd chosen. We went back to tell...

May 22, 2009 - Oklahoma

In the morning we wandered up through the rolling hills of north TX into OK. We drove to Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge in Medicine Park, OK where the longhorn cattle, elk and buffalo roam freely, unfortunately the campground was full and we didn’t see any buffalo or elk. Makes you want to sing the old favorite “Home on The Range”. The Ft Sills military reservation is where Geronimo was held as prisoner and he is also buried near here. Comanche Territory!!!!! Since we want to get to NM we decided to drive on to Sayre, OK (the...

Apr 19, 2009 - Wichita Mts. Wildlife Refuge

Sunday, April 19 John is feeling well enough for a drive today and I will take him into a shorter one. Leaving the campground headed north to Oklahoma. His goal was Oklahoma City, but I knew we would stop before that. We headed for the Wichita Mts. Wildlife Refuge. What an awesome choice that was. The weather was good and the drive easy. Our first stop in the Mts. was the "Holy City" This is the background for the longest running Passion Play in America. Of course we were a week late for the play, but that's OK, because just being there was...
