Sep 12, 2010 - Lawton, OK

We had probably the most difficult day of driving from Little Rock to Lawton, OK. There was a cross wind all the way across Oklahoma. Virg really had to fight the wheel all day. To say the least, he was pretty tired when we finally arrived at our son, Bret's house. After seeing the family, he forgot all about being tired. We haven't seen Bret and his family since last fall before he left for his third tour in Iraq. We are so thankful that he came home safely. We are also very proud because he has been selected for Sargeant Major. He won't...

Oct 19, 2009 - Ft. Sill Oklahoma (Lawton, OK)

We stopped at Ft Sill to setup in the PX (Thursday thru Sunday). We parked at a Famcamp on base (They have 2 - one near the PX and one 10 miles from the PX on base, by a small lake). the one by the PX was full, so we parked in the other one called LETRA, short for Lake Elmer Thomas Rec Area. It is next to the Ft Sill Artillery Range. We at times thought there were "incoming"!! Also..helicopters everywhere the first day... We had small mountains surrounding us and protecting us. :-} Thank heavens. It is a very nice camp ground with all...

The Groth Adventures

Oct 7, 2009 - Wichita Mountains NWR

Oklahoma’s Premier Wildlife Refuge and home to the BIG critters - Wednesday, October 7 Before leaving Red Rock Canyon State Park we took a couple of hikes, one to the top of the canyon walls, and another up a box canyon where the environment is reminiscent of prehistoric times. Both were worth the effort. Rain is predicted, and the ranger last night told us a severe storm is expected today. As we left the park and headed south the skies were already dark and getting darker. The only light place seemed to be the place we were leaving. In...

2009 Spring 2 Fall

Oct 4, 2008 - Fort Sill, Oklahoma

Since the last post we have been on the move every couple day’s and not doing anything to really talk about, other than going to Fort Sill, Oklahoma to see our oldest grandson Jimmy Lee who’s stationed there with the Army. I call him Jim Rod, West Virginias answer to John Rambo. We are just taking it easy and enjoying the country side. We decided to pass on the Balloon festival in Albuquerque because of the large crowd that would be there……we just don’t like trying to enjoy our selves with nearly one million people all at the same time. I...

May 20, 2008 - Buffalo, Longhorns, Prairie Dogs, Lawton, Oklahoma

Tuesday, May 20, 2008 We had another short stay. The Cadillac Ranch, Historic Route 66 District, and antique shops were what we saw while staying in Amarillo. The Brake-Pro was not cooperative on this morning. After several attempts it finally connected and we left the Oasis RV Resort at 8:42 am. The skies were clear, with a little wind, and 68˚. We started out on Arnot Road. Before turning onto West I-40 Frontage Road we stopped at the Texas Trading Company. It was closed the day before. We were looking for a Texas Bluebonnet kitchen towel...

Jan 28, 2008 - Our First RV Trip

Our RV had been sitting on the lot for over one year, so you can imagine there would be a few bugs to work out. A screw in a tire, a dead battery, roof vents that disintegrated at the slightest touch, and water valves that had to be figured out to get water in the hot water tank. Also, outfitting a new RV is like buying for a new house...it never seems to end. The first trip to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, just north of Lawton, OK, went well and was a good trip. We learned a lot about the RV and corrected some problems. On the...

May 18, 2007 - We Start North For Home

Thursday we stayed around the resort. In the morning we walked over to the activity center where Joyce did some laundry and I posted some stuff on line and checked the mail. Later we got everything ready to go and loaded a good part of it in the trunk. Friday morning it was easy to load the rest and get on the road. When we went to checkout the office was not open yet, but I saw a key drop and dropped our keys. One of the security guys was nearby so I confirmed with him that was all we needed to do and we were on the road. It was another...

Apr 29, 2007 - Oklahoma Odes

Where the corn is as high as an elephants eye! Saturday 28th April 2007 So, today we drive from Arlington, Forth Worth to Great Plains State Park in Oklahoma. An easy drive on nice roads without too much traffic. Though once we cross the border between Texas and Oklahoma, which is the Red River in Texas and the Oklahoma River, the towns look a little run down and much poorer than Texas. But after talking to local folks it transpires that the State have bought up large tracts of property on either side of the road we drove along to make it...
