Apr 11, 2018 - Buda to Lawton via Waco

On my drive north today I stopped in Waco to eat at The Magnolia Table - Chip and Joanna Gaines new restaurant. Last time I passed through this town I visited the Silos - another one of their projects. I took many photos of the eatery to give an overview of the place. It is a very busy, fun place. They close at three o'oclock and sometimes stop taking names 4 hours before that - that's how many people are checking it out. I sat with three young ladies. One flew in from Phoenix for a few days just to check out Waco. The other two were from...

Aug 8, 2017 - Wichita Mountain National Wildlife Refuge

We drove up to the Wichita Mountain National Wildlife Refuge today. It is near Lawton OK. We saw buffalos, wild turkeys, prairie dogs and some Texas longhorns. The area is very pretty. The visitor’s center has a lot of good information. They have an Elk bugle tour in Sept and a Buffalo auction Oct 19th. They said there are too many buffalo for the amount of land so every year they have a round up and auction off some of them. I would like to go to one of the auctions sometime. In the Refuge they have a Holy City site. Every Easter they put...

Big Bend Excitement

Sep 13, 2014 - Lawton Oklahoma

Leaving Aledo, Texas we headed north to Wichita, Texas and realized we were close to Oklahoma so we decided to keep heading north into Oklahoma. The area was dry and flat but once we got to Lawton we continued west and got a good look of the Wichita Mountains. We went through a lot of small towns, some that appeared pretty dried up with many empty strip malls and overrun yards. In Altus the roads were lined with cars and police controlled the traffic as a Air show was underway at the Altus AFB. We re-entered Texas at just west of Hollis and...

Oct 26, 2013 - Lawton, OK

Day 74-75 - Lawton, OK 10/25-26/2013 We arrived at Lori's in the afternoon. We spent the afternoon visiting with her and Brady. Later we took Brady and Chester to the park close by, they had a great time. I think the slide is Brady's favorite. Jeff came home while we were at the park, he and Bob had a good time visiting while we were gone. We had a good spaghetti dinner that Lori fixed and visited more. Saturday we woke up to rain that wasn't supposed to start until later in the afternoon. We went to the wildlife refuge, saw a couple of...

2013 Fall Colors

Aug 6, 2013 - The Haunted Jail of Matador

On our way out of Lubbock yesterday, we passed the Buddy Holley Museum and the American Wind Power Center and Museum. I wasn’t able to stop at the Buddy Holley Museum, but I stopped at the windmill place long enough to get some pictures of those displayed outside. The Center has its own working wind turbine that supplies most of the power used in the buildings. Inside there are over 100 windmills of all types that represent the history of wind mills and outside there are dozens of working wind mills. The Center is in Lubbock because of...

May 23, 2013 - Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge

Wednesday off to Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge which was about 18 miles from the campground, where the Bison & Longhorn Cattle roam free, there are Elk here as well but we did not see any. A visit to the visitor centre to pick up trail maps and decide what to do for the day, this is the most beautiful park we have been into in a long time, it probably helps because loads of flowers are in bloom, where ever you look & walk it is carpets of wild flowers. First hike was French Lake about a 2.5 hour walk this is where we saw the Eastern...

Wandering America

May 23, 2013 - Lawton

Monday a 90 mile journey to Lawton where Wal wants to go to various Indian places here and I want to visit the Wichita Wildlife Refuge, we are here for 3-4 nights. We thought we were driving away from all these storms to now find out on arrival it is on Tornado Alert here as well, there is a storm shelter on the campground, after all we are in Tornado season but they do seem to be having quite a lot around us at the moment. Sitting here watching the clouds darken and hope we do not get a storm tonight, areas have been having hail the size...

May 21, 2013 - Oklahoma Tornado

Just to let you all know we are fine. The latest tornado that hit outer suburbs of Oklahoma City Monday is about 70 miles from us, we are south west of Oklahoma City, we moved on Monday thinking we were getting out of the Tornado predicted but on arrival we find we are still on Tornado alert, there is a storm shelter at the campground. There are sirens that go off in every town and we have been advised what to do if we see one.

Wandering America

Apr 4, 2011 - The Barite Rose Rock

Still cold and windy this morning when we left to drive into Lawton to see the Prairie Museum and then go next door for the Comanche Nation Museum. The coolest item on display was The Barite Rose Rock, the State Rock of Oklahoma, I don't know how to describe it so I guess you'll have to look it up on the web. After lunch we drove over to Fort Sill to see their military museum, we got on base ok but the museum is closed on Mondays. Still early afternoon so we took a drive to Duncan a town about 25 miles east of Lawton to the Chisholm Trail...

Apr 3, 2011 - Red Neck Kind of Day

Cool and windy this morning so we stayed home and watched the NASCAR race. Earnhardt Jr almost pulled one off but Harvick did a late race bump and run for the win, that's two weeks in a row. About 4:30PM we left for the Comanche Casino in Lawton, after a couple of hours and a small donation we decided to find someplace for soup and salad, then call it a day.

Apr 2, 2011 - Beautiful Weather & Location

Short drive today it's only a 125 miles up to Lake Lawtonka which is just north of Lawton and next to Fort Sills AFB. Our space is just up from the beach of Lake Lawtonka, what a beautiful place. The weather has been great lately, you need to turn the heat on when you first get out of bed and then you need the air conditioner on during the mid afternoon. Spent most of the afternoon catching up with the laundry I think we had five machine loads. We've had a light tail wind since we left the RGV, the wind here is blowing 20-25MPH, maybe that...
