Jul 31, 2016 - Guymon, OK.

We drove 318 miles today. Kansas is suppose to be somewhat flat. It felt like we were going uphill all day. We were running 3500 RPM's half the time. The reason a min. 16 mph wind going the opposite direction we were. Notice we said minimum! The gas mileage went south with it. Fortunately gas prices are in the $1.80's here. We are in the Corral Drive-in RV Park. It is exactly that. An old drive-in converted to RV Park that still shows movies and sells Pizza, Popcorn and Snowcones, just like the good old days. There were people there for the...

Jul 20, 2016 - RV Park & Drive-in

Our goal today was Guymon and the Corral RV Park, which is not only a nice campground but they even have a Drive-in theater too. We fueled at a truck stop just outside Raton, figuring that would get us to Oklahoma City. The drive was uneventful even though the GPS routed us a way we probably wouldn't have chosen ourselves. It was OK until we saw a sign that said 'low clearance'....OK, how low? We kept going and it turned out it was a bridge with 13' 7" clearance, whew, we'd be OK. Traffic was heavier than we expected, but we arrived at the...

Summer 2016 & Beyond

Apr 17, 2015 - Going North East

The nights have been cold over the last 3 days even below freezing one night. This meant that we wanted to get out of the mountains, lower where it is usually warmer and further east. We stayed one night in Navajo Lake State Park. Another very nice and well kept State park as we have found most to be. At $14.00 a night you can't beat it. We drove some very nice roads into and through New Mexico except for the garbage and bottles along the highways. Someone could make a mint here just on deposit money alone. We stopped at the 4 state point...

Oct 13, 2014 - The Dalton Gang & drive to New Mexico

We hit the road about 10:30 for Oklahoma to spend the night. On the way we decided to stop at the Dalton Gang’s Hideout and Underground Tunnel. It is in Meade, Kansas just about 40 minutes from Dodge City. The Dalton Gang Hideout in Meade Kansas was the home of Mrs. J. N. Whipple from 1887 until 1892. Eva Whipple was the sister of Grat Dalton, Bob Dalton, and Emmett Dalton. The Dalton Gang was a notorious group of outlaws from 1890-1892, that robbed banks and trains. Many people suspected Eva Dalton of hiding her brothers, but it wasn't...

Oct 12, 2014 - Downtown Dodge & Santa Fe Trail

We are currently in Guymon, Oklahoma. A small town in the Panhandle of Oklahoma close to New Mexico. This is merely an overnight stay, as we leave for New Mexico tomorrow. Yesterday, we went to downtown Dodge City and stopped at the Santa Fe Trail. In 1821, the Santa Fe Trail became America's first great international commercial highway, and for nearly sixty years thereafter was one of the nation's great routes for western expansion. As you walk the paved walkway there are many places to stop to read the boards provided with history of the...

Apr 28, 2014 - feelin' 'bout half-past dead......

so my lovely wife has gone back to our lovely house and lovely grandkids and lovely dogs, leaving her despondent husband to forge on alone on this herculean effort. ok, a little bit of an overstatement, but as the title says, right now i’m feelin’ ‘bout half-past dead. i pushed as hard as i could while she was here, because every mile i walk while she’s driving is the equivalent of two miles when i’m on my own. so by my calculations, i progressed 293 miles in the 12 days she was here – a much better average than the 10 i netted yesterday...
