Apr 5, 2014 - Ah Spring

From Albuquerque to Oklahoma City on I-40 is about 550 miles. If there is a section of highway in this great country of ours hat is more consistently windy, I don’t want to experience it. We’ve been driving this route (except for some years when Sara’s crew was in Utah or Texas) twice a year since 2005, and I can’t think of a single trip when we weren’t fighting nasty high winds on a significant portion of the trip. You’ve heard me whine plenty in the past about controlling a “high profile vehicle” in such conditions, so I won’t go...

They're At It Again!

Jun 1, 2013 - Guthrie, OK

It was an EXTREMELY long day on the road. We started at 8am and pulled into Guthrie around 4pm, with just a short stop for lunch and one rest stop to walk Duke. The weather was great and it was nice to see blue skies after hearing about all the storms up this way. When we checked into the campground, we were told that many people in Guthrie tried to evacuate last night due to a tornado. Glad we missed that! As we approached Oklahoma City from the south, the traffic slowed down to a crawl. It turned out we were at Moore, which is the town...

May 31, 2011 - Guthrie, Oklahoma

The wind has been roaring since a few hours after we arrived in Oklahoma City. Unfortunately, this isn't good for travel in a high profile vehicle like a motor home. Luckily, this morning is as calm as can be. Perfect driving weather. Whew! We left Oklahoma City and headed north into Kansas. On the way, we stopped at a truck stop to get the RV and car washed. Thanks Mike Shelley for the recommendation. Easy on and off the freeway and they did a great job! We also stopped in Guthrie, Oklahoma on the way. We parked at the local Walmart,...

Apr 13, 2011 - Guthrie, Oklahoma

Drove north again today and stopped at Guthrie Oklahoma. Still hot but much less humidity. Without the high humidity, 30 degrees (83F) feels like 30 degrees instead of 45. Very windy. Anywhere near the Gulf of Mexico is very humid. Would not want to be there in summer. Eating in restaurants until I get further north. It is too hot for my refrigerator and too hot to cook.

Apr 7, 2011 - OK City Stockyard & Guthrie, OK

After the emotional morning of visiting the museum and memorial for the Federal building bombing, we decided to head over to the Oklahoma City Stockyards. They call it “Stockyard City”. First stop was The Cattlemen’s Café. I’d read the reviews on it and sounded like a great spot for lunch. Lunch was a great time to go, because they have “lunch” steak specials. We ordered the luncheon steak with salad, bread and baked potato. Yummy!!! The steaks are never frozen and grilled to perfection. The waitress waits for you to cut into your steak as...

Nov 20, 2010 - Visiting old friends (Ben and Dixie)

I put a couple pictures on here showing a cottonfield in bloom, and after it’s picked. 11/18/10 Didn’t do much today except laundry. Watched Grey’s/Private Practice. Pork Chops/Rice for supper. 11/19/10 Cleaned up around water spigot. Hooked up gas bottle to LP. Vacuumed RV. Watched Office and Apprentice. Went to Ben’s for supper. Delicious very thick hamburgers. Dixie (Elkins) Merritt and her husband Bob (Biscuit) also came. Had a good time reminiscing about the old days at DAC, the bowling team, etc. MARC (Midland ARC - where they all...

Nov 17, 2010 - Windy weather

11/16/10 Got set up this morning (Tuesday) – got slightly lost on the way here but I just kept following Bob (in addition to stopping at a gas station and asking!) and we finally got here. Had to cross the tracks at one point and a train was coming. I thought Bob had seen it (I was following in the car) but he hadn’t and it almost ran him over (scarred the begeeses out of him)! Met Ben for lunch at Cici’s Pizza, then went to Walmart and back to the RV to finish getting set up. We weren’t able to put our slide-out out until we got more...

Nov 14, 2010 - Guthrie to Haskell

11/14/10 Drove into Guthrie this morning and gassed up, then headed out for Texas. It was pretty chilly (colder than Maquoketa), so Bob got under the hood to turn the heater on (we have a few idiosyncrasies in this RV). About 30 miles from Guthrie we went through Kingfisher, OK – which is the birthplace of Sam Walton. They have a statue in the middle of town, but it’s definitely not him… It’s just turning “fall” down here – the leaves are all starting to change but they are more muted than back home. Not nearly as pretty to look at. Drove...

Nov 13, 2010 - Reality TV Day

Spent almost the entire day waiting for my brother-in-law (who I’ve never met) to audition (on a live feed) for a new reality show. Finally got to see him about 3 in the afternoon and he seemed to really impress the judges. Other than that we didn’t do much of anything today. Tried to figure out our route for tomorrow but we changed our minds so many times I think we’ll just “wing it” – that’s what us Wingers do. Melissa called to let us know Bob’s meds, etc. arrived today so we’ll pick them up when we get down to Midland. Talked to one of...

Nov 12, 2010 - Gloomy Guthrie Day

11/12/10 – Happy Birthday Dan Gloomy, chilly, rainy day. Drove into town this morning to get some equipment to try to get the TV working. Finally got some channels in (Bob is soooo good). Watched The Office, the Apprentice and Survivor. Now just need to catch up on Grey’s and Private Practice. We’ll head to town later today to have Mexican and make it back to the RV before it gets dark. It’s about 5 miles into town, and I don’t see well to drive at night. (I’ve been taking over the car driving since he won’t have his drivers license in his...

Nov 11, 2010 - Guthrie, OK

11/11/10 Thanks to all the veterans out there. We got out of town about 8:30 and made it to Guthrie, OK about 12:45. Wasn’t nearly as windy today, but we did run into rain and fog. Weather her in Guthrie doesn’t look good – rain tomorrow and it sounds like to “clubs” are arriving tomorrow so that may mean that if it does stop raining there will be a lot of golfers out. Drove into Walmart and picked up a few things, and then to the liquor store as you can’t buy gin at Walmart here in Oklahoma (or Texas for that matter). And Bob had to have...

Oct 4, 2010 - Stopped for the night

I finally left town at 7:35 PM and drove to Guthrie OK arriving at 11:00 PM. I realized that driving through OK at night is not a bad way to travel through OK. I pulled into the RV park being careful not to make a lot of noise, successful until I accidently hit the panic button on my car keys. I am not sure if the flashing light and honking horn woke anyone, I will leave early in the morning before the mad people arise. Good Night. Remember: God won't ask what kind of car you drove. He'll ask how many people you drove who didn't have...
