Jul 6, 2010 - Hitting the road... no really....we are!!

We leave tomorrow morning to head north. Sure was hard to say goodbye to the kids and grandkids! I hope that part gets easier! We were gone all weekend visiting relatives and could not wait to get back to the 5th wheel!! It really seems like home now. Even the dogs were happy to be home. Tomorrow we head for South Dakota by way of Kansas and Nebraska. We will probably stop at Eisenhower State Park in Kansas tomorrow night. May not have computer access for a while but will update when I can.

Jun 14, 2010 - Cedar Oaks RV Park

Well, the adventure continues. Just realised I have not been writing about any of the problems we have had....it has not all been smooth sailing. Or RVing. Things we have learned so far: 1.DO NOT think you can walk under the front of the 5th wheel just because you could when it was parked at home. (in my defense it I also had a hat on and did not see it coming) First time I ever hit my head so hard it knocked me down! LOL 2.DO NOT go out and buy a big toolbox for your truck that your 5th wheel will hit when you make a tight turn! (we did...

Jun 12, 2010 - Still in Oklahoma!! :(

Well we have been on the road for over a week now. We stayed at Bernice State Park for a week waiting for the house to close. The first night we had a really bad storm and no TV, weather radio, or regular radio... the people in the tent next door kept us advised via their internet on their phone. WOW did it rain!! But no leaks in the RV and we did not blow away. The rain sounds nice on the roof. The next day I figured how to set up the TV and we have a few channels to watch. Some nights it is cool enough to open up and enjoy the lake...

May 25, 2010 - From Iowa to Missouri and Oklahoma Family

IOWA TO MISSOURI and Cousin John R. Short III: As we leave Iowa, we note two particular things. First, we regret we did not have time to visit the Amish Amana Colonies during our visit to Cedar Rapids area this trip; we hope to catch that another time, perhaps camping at Colony Country sometime when it is open, between April 1 and Nov 1. Second, the purple and yellow wildflowers are lovely. The rolling hills of Iowa give way to the much flatter plains as we approach and enter Missouri. The capital, Jefferson City, is prettier than I...

May 24, 2010 - Getting ready to hit the road

We are continuing to empty the house of our belongings, some to storage, some to the kids and selling/giving away the rest. The fun part is loading the 5th wheel and finding places for everything. I know this sounds crazy but we seem to have plenty of room so far... Our rig is a 1997 34.5 ft Avion Westport 5th wheel and a 2005 Dodge 3500 dually diesel truck. We are also taking the porte-a-bote, a folding 12 ft boat with a 2 hp motor. First and foremost I just want to let everyone know that we are newbies in the truest sense of the word. If...

May 11, 2010 - Cedar Oaks RV Resort, Grove, OK

After a wonderful visit with family and camp hosting at Ft. Cobb, OK we are on the road again! Arrived at Cedar Oaks RV Resort, Grove, OK and what a great check-in experience! They took us around on a golf cart to let us pick a site then since we were undecided on how long we would be staying said "No problem, we'll just make you as open and you can pay when you leave." We finally decided on site 79 which was a back in site in a tree line. It was also close to the cabins since Stacy, Gary and Owen are going to come spend a week-end visiting...

Apr 28, 2010 - Oklahoma

We are beginning to feel like we are being led on our travels by a pillar of rain. Wherever we go they seem to need rain and we bring it with us. In Clinton we were hermits most of the time because we were having work done on our Freightliner, and it was too wet to go out on the bike. One day we did get to the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum. In every state 66 traversed, there is a museum. We probably won’t go to another since they all must be very similar; however, seeing one was interesting. We did receive a surprise which was really...

Aug 20, 2009 - Leaving Grand Lake

Bears's Den Resort looked like one huge puddle this morning after the thunderstorm we had last night. I was so glad that we had packed most of the stuff yesterday preparing for our departure. We had breakfast and unhooked and we were on our way by 10 AM. We are not going far today, about 30 miles to the other side of the lake. We arrived at the Quapaw Casino in Miami, OK We did the paper work necessary for this FREE site. There are so many Casinos in Oklahoma with RV parking and hookups. This one has 50 AMP and water with dump. Cocktails at...

Aug 17, 2009 - Pensacola Dam

We spent the day taking a drive around Grand Lake O' the Cherokees. This is such a beautiful area, it is difficult to pick one particular area. We found our way to the southeast part of the lake and decided to tour Pensacola Dam. This Dam is considered the largest muliple arch da in the world. At 6,565 ft long, it has 51 arches and 21 spillways. Water going through the spillways is controlled by spillgates measuring 25 ft by 36 ft. The dam towers approximatly 150 ft above the riverbed. The tour was very well given by the guide. I didn't...
