Oct 18, 2018 - On to Grove

This morning, we did a tour of the Frank Phillips Home. Again, this was the 26-room abode of oil baron Frank Phillips. It was built in 1909 and still contains much of its original furnishings. There's a carriage house, greenhouse, and gardener's cottage. The home is on the National Register of Historic Sites. The home is now operated by the Frank Phillips Foundation. Joe's admission was free due to Veteran status. Our tour guide was really good; but, I was disappointed we couldn't take any pictures inside the home. But, it was pretty...

Adventures for 2018

Sep 6, 2018 - Uncle Keith

While in Oklahoma we drove over to Missouri to visit Don's Uncle Keith. He originally lived in Branson, but moved to an assisted living facililty in Nixa just south of Springfield when it became apparent that they needed more assistance at home. Sadly, Muriel, his wife of many years passed away shortly after the move. He had come to Monument to visit, but we missed being able to see him as that coincided with our trip to Oklahoma. Finally able to connect, we had a good visit.

Sep 3, 2018 - Exodus

Almost everyone planned to leave this day, those that had to go back to work that is. Jeanne and Mike decided to stay another day, so after everyone left we sat by the pool again. Dinner was no problem since we still had tons of leftovers. In fact, it was a struggle to sort everything out and get it ready to go the next day. Jeanne and Mike took us to lunch at a marina bar, then we all went back to the condo and just vegged.

Sep 2, 2018 - The Memorial

The day finally came for our final memorial. Jeanne had brought all the pictures, so I placed them around our room, along with enough chairs to accommodate us all. We were a bit late getting started, but finally everyone was seated and ready. Don had written a history of Mama and all the children and grandchildren. And after all his kidding around, he got really choked up and had trouble getting started. My cousin Sonny said a prayer, then we opened the floor to stories and remembrances, of which there were many. Mama and Daddy had lived at...

Sep 1, 2018 - Family Time

We all went our separate ways in the morning. Some to finish shopping and others to do who knows what. Scott and Amber were in charge of dinner this night. They coordinated with Jen and Marc to come up with steaks and chops, mac and cheese, squash casserole and baked potatoes for dinner. We all spent time at the pool in the afternoon while waiting for Mac, Michael and Rusty to show up. Dinner was fashionably late again, but no one cared, and we all went to bed tired and full.

Aug 31, 2018 - Our First Night

We checked in to the Wyndham around 2 in the afternoon. I sorted out who was going to be in which room, then we carried in all of our stuff, and settled down to wait for the others to arrive. I was planning dinner for that night so spent some time cutting a half dozen Cornish hens in half and getting them seasoned for the grill. I also cut up a bunch of veggies to roast in the oven. I had just finished when the others started arriving. It was a madhouse at first getting everyone sorted out, but finally we were settled and got dinner...

Aug 30, 2018 - Grove

We finally had a day to ourselves to get stocked up on things we would need for the stay at the Wyndham. We also checked in with a friend of my parents, Janiece and Les Elder. We wanted to be sure they were aware of the time and place for the memorial. With everything in place, we had a light supper and went to bed.

Aug 29, 2018 - Moving to Oklahoma

We finally made it out of town, and began our long trek across Kansas. We had originally planned to stay in Garden City, but since Michael travels a lot in Kansas I thought to call to see where he might be working, and sure enough, he was supposed to be in Dodge City that evening. So we changed our plans and drove on into Dodge to the Walmart there where we could meet him for dinner. His turn to buy; he brought sub sandwiches. We always have a good time when we get together, and this time was no exception. Since he was in his work truck, he...

Oct 24, 2015 - Back to Branson

We did go back to Branson to have lunch with Sue and John. Just that would have been great but they had also invited another couple we had met when we were all at Big Bend last year. Dan and Rosemary are also full timers who were traveling through this area on vacation between volunteer gigs. The four of them had worked in the same park over the summer. What a great thing that the six of us could spend a few hours together again! And what fun to listen to their stories. On Friday we stayed home to relax (ha!) and get some cleaning and...

Oct 21, 2015 - Grove

Well it looks as if I am running behind. After Bartlesville we headed to Grove on Grand Lake o' the Cherokees. This is where my parents lived after my dad retired. It is not the same without family here but it is a beautiful area all the same. We still know some people here and it is a good place to camp while we branch out to visit. On Sunday we drove to Rogers, Arkansas to visit Don's aunt. On Monday we drove to Branson, Missouri to visit an elderly aunt and uncle. It was a beautiful drive through the Ozarks. That evening we heard from...
