Oct 12, 2012 - Chicken Creek, Oklahoma

We are in Cookson, OK at the Chicken Creek Campground for our annual rally with Wes, Tonia and the rest of the HitchHiker group. Highlights here is eating at Sam & Ella's Chicken Palace, BBQ Brisket dinner, football, and campfires. At Sam & Ellas (say that really fast), they do not serve chicken, it is a pizza place and just about the best we have ever had. Wes BBQ's brisket and ribs, and everybody brings the sides and we have a really great dinner. That is being held tonight. Then tomorrow we will drink beer and watch college football...

Home Sweet RV - 2011

Oct 5, 2011 - Chicken Creek, Oklahoma

We went to Chicken Creek Campground which is on Lake Tenkiller near Cookson, Oklahoma. We were there for a gathering off HitchHiker friends. It was hosted by Wes and Tonia Williams. On Saturday Wes and Tonia smoke brisket and ribs and we have a fantastic bbq dinner. But on Friday we have our traditional dinner at Sam and Ellas Chicken Palace. You wouldn't know it from the name but it is a pizza place. It has just about the best pizza we have had. There is a place in Seattle that is great also. We were there for a week and we just spent our...

May 4, 2010 - Cookson Bend

We had a beautiful drive through the Ouachita National Forest area and arrived at Cookson Bend COE park about 3pm, just 130 miles north of Beavers Bend. Nice travel day. This park is not taking reservations at this time because of some construction work being done, but the camp host assured us there were plenty of spaces available. He wasn't wrong!! I think we are the only ones here. We picked our favorite spot right on the shore of Tenkiller Ferry lake. We have wonderful views in all directions. The sun is shining and there are only a few...

Apr 17, 2010 - Days 35, 36 - Chicken Creek

I'm behing myself again. And I won't be able to catch up right now...hopefully tonight. Friday was a waitin'-for-the-brisket-to-smoke day. And it was worth the wait. Wes and Tonia provided the brisket and lots of ribs for our big potluck and we ate like kings. The weather held for us...it was beautiful all day. I spent much of the late morning and early afternoon just exploring Tahlequah. It's a vibrant community with the University and Cherokee Nation headquarters there. Lots of history... Saturday the weather turned on us and it...

Apr 15, 2010 - Day 34 - Life is good here!

I didn't get to bed until after midnight last night after I updated this journal. Hence, I slept 'til eight. Hunter patiently waited for me to get up but I knew he needed to go so I pushed the coffee button to ON and we immediately went for a walk. The morning was beautiful. T-shirt temp, sunny, no wind. Just perfect. So when we returned, I brought my laptop and coffee outside, sat down at the big table...when just then, Wes (head of IT for the Cherokee Nation) came over...then Roy (retired Lt., Wichita police dept.) came wandering down the...

Apr 14, 2010 - Day 33 - Chicken Creek Classic 2.5

Today was a travel day, but only about 165 miles. When I have a short one, it seems it takes me longer to pull out of the park. Read emails, check the news and weather.com... is there a tornado expected?, drink coffee and do everything at a slower pace. It was eleven before I got going. I love the layout of the Oklahoma highways, but it was the roughest ride I've been on yet. We had a horrible time getting my hitch to unhitch and I think it was because of the ride. We'll see. Lots of people here to help me figure it out before I take off...

Oct 24, 2009 - Chicken Creek, Oklahoma

We are spending about 7 night here with fellow HitchHiker friends. The weather has been all over the place but today it was sunny and 70 degrees. We had a big BBQ today. Our friend Wes smoked about 25 lbs of brisket and a bunch of ribs. It was in the smoker about 12 hours. There are 23 people here for this little get together. We are having a bunch of fun.
