May 17, 2013 - Elk City, OK
OOOOOOOOOOOklahoma! Well, you know the rest..... Our first impression of Oklahoma is very favorable! We left Amarillo, TX where the land is just as flat as it could be, and mostly dry. If you don't water it, it won't grow. Oklahoma, on the other hand, has a little roll to the landscape! There are trees! The grass is green! Wow! It has been a while! Elk City is just a one night stop, but it's a nice stop. As of morning, the weather is still good. It is warm at 75. It is also somewhat humid, and it has been a while since I have said that!

May 16, 2013 - Oklahoma City
Tuesday moved on again a 1.5 hour drive to Oklahoma City where we are stopping just 2 nights. We arrived by lunchtime today which gave us time to visit some of the city, today we walked along the canal in Bricktown, loads of murals in the area, painted Bison as well. Very windy here but just as well as it is so hot would be unbearable without the wind. Along the canal we saw lots of Ducks & ducklings, as well as a stray rabbit and a bird that had fallen out of its nest. Now to find today one of the air cons is not working & we really could...

May 16, 2013 - Tulsa
Sunday on the move again driving to Tulsa only 47 miles away. Sunday afternoon headed out to Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness where you can get on a walking trail alongside the Arkansas River, we walked about 4 miles, where we came across another long thin green snake, white tailed deer and a red shouldered hawk. Monday off to Tulsa downtown ( Tulsa is known as The Oil Capital City of the World) we walked miles around all the different streets looking at all the Art Deco buildings and went into many lobbies of them too as we were told they...

May 16, 2013 - Deep Fork Wildlife Refuge
Friday we drove to Deep Fork Wildlife Refuge where there are quite a few boardwalks you can wander around, I had read to watch out for rattle snakes on the board walks but we did not see any there, as we walked though saw 2 Garter Snakes entwined with each other on a tree ( these are harmless). Saw different turtles here the caterpillars & bugs. We went back to the visitor centre to show him the photos of the snakes, just to check they were what we thought they were, while we were there we saw the Lunar Moth on the grass, also got talking...

May 16, 2013 - Okmulgee State Park
Wednesday we drove to Okmulgee State Park in Oklahoma, parked by the lake with lots of hiking trails about, there is also another state park just down the road- Dripping Springs. First night here we had a thunder storm that kept us awake most of the night, but since then the weather has been lovely until Saturday afternoon and another thunder storm now going on. We have walked miles & miles while staying here, seen loads of different birds but too fast to photograph.

May 16, 2013 - RV Repairs and Covering Miles
Tuesday, May 14 The best laid plans sometimes don't work. When we were driving up to Raton Pass this afternoon, the “check engine soon” light came on. We managed to make it over the pass and into Raton, but the Ford dealer here couldn't get it in until tomorrow morning. So we're staying at an unlovely KOA campground tonight (one of our least favorite types), but we have an 8:00 am appointment in the morning. If we're lucky, it is something they can fix and we'll continue with our schedule for the rest of the trip just a day late. Wednesday,...

May 15, 2013 - Across Oklahoma on Route 66
On the road early. Straight south to I-40 and Tulsa, Oklahoma. After passing through Tulsa we got off the interstate and followed RTE 66 to Oklahoma City. Marilyn wanted to go to Russ's ribs in Bristow but when we arrived we found that it had closed. Ate lunch in the trailer in a church parking lot. The disappointing thing was that 10 miles before Bristow we had stopped for gas and noticed a BBQ place across the road. Locals we going in for lunch. We considered it but decided to go to Bristow. Bad decision. Back on I-40 around Oklahoma...

May 9, 2013 - East by South-East
I realized that when I spoke about feed lots last time not everybody might have known what I was talking about. Feed lots or Feed yards as they are called here are huge beef growing operations. There are literally thousands of beef cows penned up in large outside pens laid out around feed silos. As we were driving further east we noticed many of these along the highway with Garden City,KS being at the centre of it both east and west. We stopped in Dodge City famous for it's Wild West days. We went to see a large museum and Boot Hill were...

May 9, 2013 - Tahlequah Project Ending
Today was our last work day at Circle of Care Children's Home in Tahlequah. We say goodbye for now to the great staff and to our fellow Nomads for this project. We have accomplished a lot in our 3 weeks of work. These are some "before" and "after" pictures of the clothing co-op. It's hard to get good photos of the remodeled bathrooms, but they look really great and should be really be comfortable and functional for those who live and visit here. Looks like the decision has been made and we are going on from here! We will take off Sunday or...

May 6, 2013 - Oklahoma City National Memorial
The Memorial was incredibly moving bringing tears. It is unimaginable how beautifully peaceful this history was revealed and so chilling an event. We had to visit again at night. Plans now include Waco (David Koresh's bulldozed compound) to see where Tim McVeigh began his plans involving Terry Nichols, his service buddy.

May 6, 2013 - Monday Chapel and Indian Heritage Center
Each Monday we attend the staff chapel service in this beautiful little chapel on the grounds. The staff here are truly God's people, quietly doing His work every day. They are really remarkable. Also, this Monday was our "day off" since we had worked on Saturday. So we took the opportunity to visit the Cherokee Heritage Center here in Tahlaquah which included a replica of a native village from the 1700-early 1800s, and a museum mostly dedicated to the story of the Trail of Tears. It was all very interesting, including the fact that unlike...
