Jul 3, 2012 - Farewell

Yes goodbye to one of my favorite spots, Vermilion OH. I really like it here because it reminds me of Long Island specifically Freeport NY where my grandparents lived on the water and where I spent many a summer. We also have enjoyed our visit with our great friends Tom and Shirley. They rolled out the red carpet and their hospitality was excellent. We all went to lunch on the water yesterday and ate outside watching the boat traffic. Tom had to work late yesterday going in at 4 pm so he was able to join us for lunch. Their daughter Erica,...

Jul 2, 2012 - Holy Thunder Storms Batman

We went to Tom and Shirley's Church for an excellent service. We had been there last year when we stopped by. Very nice indeed, excellent music and sermon. It is a very upbeat Bible based Church. Later in the day Tom and I went swimming in the lake. We packed a picnic dinner and headed to music in the park. A polish band was going to play as the sky's darkened we ate our dinner. We sat down the band began to play and a few sprinkles began. They played 2 songs and it looked to be a fun evening in store. A man walked up to the band and talked...

Jul 1, 2012 - There's a summer place

If there is a place for summer it is Vermilion Ohio. We have been here a number of times in the summer and this would be a great place for a summer home. Boats, beaches and water everywhere (Lake Erie). We had a BF'er Banquet not far from here a few years ago and we really like this area. Tom and I strolled the quaint downtown area of Vermilion inclucing the beach. We stopped for root beer floats and drove around some beautiful areas as we waited for his Shiley to come home from work. My Shirley did laundry and a craft she is working on....

Jun 30, 2012 - A blow out

But not the kind you're thinking of. We got our propane tank (we have 2) filled in Kokomo before we left. When we pulled into our campground with the lake I smelled propane and noticed the newly filled tank was leaking. I took it to be looked at and the gas company told me the safety pressure valve had blown out and done its job. The guy overfilled the tank. So I had to get a new tank and 7 gallons of propane. Overall the fill up cost us $100! But at least we know we are safe. A bit delayed but we pulled into Vermilion OH and are again at...

Jun 16, 2012 - Vermilion Lighthouse

Since the day was still young, and we knew there was a Fish Festival going on in Vermilion, we headed that direction. Since there is a lighthouse in Vermilion, we stopped to see that along the way. The lighthouse at Vermilion sits at the edge of downtown, adjacent to the Inland Seas Maritime Museum. The structure is a replica of the original, wooden lighthouse, built in 1847. This is one of the newer lighthouses built in Ohio. It is a replica of the original Vermilion lighthouse that was built in 1877. The original lighthouse was at the end...

Our 2012 Travels

Jul 11, 2011 - What the heck is a corn hole?

We went to an inspiring worship service at Tom and Shirley's church. Awesome music and a preacher who understood how to relate to his congregation. Their Sunday school class had the annual summer picnic hosted by a couple that owns and runs a grain farm. They also have a truck camper! Fabulous food and then the fun began. Corn hole. It is a game, somewhat similar to horse shoes, but way different. You play in teams and the game is played with slanted boards 35 feet apart with a hole near the top. Each player has 4 bean bags and you try and...

Jul 10, 2011 - Parade Rest

The festival weekend continued yesterday with a parade. We can't even remember the last time we went to a parade. Floats and twirlers, bands and fire equipment. Another beautiful day and a parade. We had great seats in the shade right in front of the library where Shirley Mann works. After the parade the 7 of us hiked across the street for a chicken bar b q.....yum. Shirley went back to work and Tom, my Shirley and I sat and talked in the shade of their yard and I had the brilliant idea of going swimming. Well Tom and his Shirley belong to...

Jul 9, 2011 - Another favorite place

If you like boats and water then Vermilion OH is for you. We have been here before about 5 years ago at a BF'er Banquet up the road just west of Sandusky OH. Tom and Shirley live here and we visited and fell in love with this place. So we are back. Quaint town with hanging baskets of flowers EVERYWHERE. This is the Ft. Lauderdale of the north. Canals with colonial style houses and yachts. Beaches, flat road surfaces for biking and great restaurants. We could spend a week here. We rode our bikes yesterday between 15 and 18 miles and toured...

Jul 8, 2011 - Man did we hall

Well actually I halled. The Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton OH was our first stop. It was fantastic. My first sports love is baseball followed by hockey then football. I have been to both the baseball and hockey halls of fame and this one was just as impressive. Shirley opted and walked around the grounds and read while I took my time. Being a Buffalo fan I ran across a number of Bill's Hall of Famer's stuff but I do watch and follow football so I knew about all the other players. I was especially interested in all the leagues that...

May 1, 2009 - Lots of Rain in Cleveland

I finally got out on the road about 3:50PM on Friday. Had a good run and made good time to the Flying J in Austinburg, OH, refuled there and met a couple from Syracuse. They were also headed to the rally. They spend the night at Flying J. I wanted to get in another 100 miles so headed out. When I got to Cleveland the skys opened up and it got pretty dark because of the rain and clouds. Traffic was pretty light so I made it through there with out any issues. Then on to the Ohio Turnpike, went in the truck lane, they do not have ezpass so had...

Aug 18, 2007 - Vermilion, Ohio

At 10:09 on Wednesday, August 15 we picked up our Big Sky from the RV dealer where we had left it for some minor tweaking and headed out westward on our great adventure. First stop will be in Ohio, where we will visit family before heading westward. The travel north and west through the Allegheny Mountains on the PA Turnpike in our Big RV proved to be less challenging then we feared. The truck proved equal to the task of hauling our 22,000 pound “camper” through the mountains, although David was quite appreciative of the extra gauges he had...
