Sep 6, 2012 - Birding and Trucking

If birds are something you're not exactly fond of, this journal entry will probably have your head spinning because I tend to go overboard when it comes to birds and birding. I even have a hard time walking past bird books without buying one although I have gotten much better since we have become RVers and our space is limited. My mother gave me an appreciation for birds early in life. She always had feeders out to attract them and planted bushes that provides berries in the winter. But I remember the first bird that really peaked my...

Jul 16, 2012 - Springfield, Ohio

We went out for breakfast at a Bob Evans Restaurant. They seem to be pretty popular here in the Mid-West as we have seen them in Wisconsin, Indiana and now Ohio. If you are a west-coaster, think Denny’s. John had his usual Biscuits and Sausage gravy which almost rivaled Mom’s which is quite a feat in itself. I have never tried to cook it, cause it wouldn’t be Mom’s I know it just couldn’t muster up. In fact, I try not to cook any of her meals for that reason. Nobody can match your Mom’s unless she was a terrible cook. I have the same...

Yippee Tyo's!

Jul 15, 2012 - Springfield, Oh. & Clouds

We headed for Springfield, Ohio today to stay for 2 days. It was about a 4 ½ hour drive, with a half hour at a rest stop getting sandwiches out of the trailer. Many of my photos are quick shots through the bug stained front windshield, or on my right with the window either up or down (depending on how fast I am), then through John’s window and of course, the back seat window. Keeping in mind that most of the time these photos are taken at 60 miles per hours down the freeway. This is my explanation should they appear fuzzy or weird looking,...

Today was spent with odd jobs and visiting with my mom. I did manage to get some exercise in, since it went below 90 degrees - OMG. 90 degrees and the humidity. Makes me miss my beautiful Colorado. Jun 1, 2011 - Day 4 - Springfield, OH

First thing in the morning, we went to a roadside flower stand to buy my mom some Hula Hoop petunias - aren't they beautiful. Because of the hard rain and wind, everyone here has had trouble sustaining their hanging baskets. Then, of course, it was a stop to the neighborhood German bakery (Shuler's)to get our peanut butter rolls and maple bars and Gene's doughnut holes on a stick. We will be going there later today to get homemade noodles to bring home. In the afternoon, we went to Plain City to the Der Dutchman Amish restaurant. My Uncle...

Aug 15, 2009 - Bethlehem, PA to Springfield, OH

509 miles total I slept like a log last night. Kim was up at 4:30 and had trouble getting back to sleep. By the time I rolled out of bed and was dressed and ready, she was having breakfast out on the back patio. She has an awesome setup back there, with a pond and waterfall, and some comfy furniture. It was so humid this morning, we felt like we had just stepped out of a shower once we were done getting the bikes ready. I said at least it wasn't raining. Kim agreed. But we try not to say the four letter word that begins with "R". We...

Tomorrow’s Stars RV Resort They have a great Air Force Museum here in Dayton, OH so we had to go and visit. There were planes from all the different eras and wars many of which I had not seen before. One plane was shaped like a flying saucer which was pretty interesting. Also, Orange County Choppers was commissioned to create a B2 motorcycle which turned out really cool. The Doolittle Co. had some toasting glasses there commemorating their raid against Japan. The surviving Raider’s have periodic reunions and toast with these glasses. The...

Sep 7, 2007 - Beaver Valley Campground, S. Charleston, OH

Hello Everybody, We have now arrived in South Charleston, that's between Springfield and Columbus, OH. It's a nice little place, nothing fancy but it's in an area where we'll be able to see lots of people. Barb and Oakie, my big sister, invited us to their annual Church Picnic on Sat, and even though I've been gone from that church for many years, I'm hoping to see some people from 35 years ago, of course they'll all recognize me because I haven't changed at all in 35 years. Oh wait a minute, I have a road map on my face, you can go from...

Sunday July 15th - Day 74 - Mile 14,707 We finished Illinois and Indiana today and got a start on Ohio. The day started great with very little traffic. Then we hit Indianapolis and the day went to hell. Super 70 through the city was closed and the long bypass seemed to go on forever in heavy traffic. We finally reached 70 east but not too long after everything stopped because of an accident. We eventually got going again but them came to another long stretch of construction. Just to put a little icing on the cake, the front end of the truck...

Arrived in Springfield, OH on the 27th. Carl and Jane were excellent hosts providing us with not only a free parking place on their acreage, but electric and a garage for our car that color coordinated with our motorhome. Jane, the closet domestic diva, even baked Dean a German Chocolate birthday cake and prepared us a home-cooked meatloaf dinner which included an extra meatloaf that we could take with us for sandwiches. We are getting spoiled. She doesn't want it known that she can cook, but I decided to let the cat out of the bag anyway....

The trip to Goshen, IN was uneventful and we pulled into the Goshen Fairgrounds by Thursday afternoon. We had the weekend to set up and get acquainted with the town before Sunday when some of the classes and welcoming meetings were started. For those readers just tuning in, we had arranged to go to Goshen, IN for a week of Maintenance Seminars that was put on by one of the chapters within the Holiday Rambler Recreational Vehicle Club. The Goshen County Fairgrounds was the perfect location for this since it is within a few miles of the...

May 4, 2007 - First planned stop

May 3rd - Mile 319 Traveled 319 miles to New Stanton, PA. Missed the planned turn off for the PA turnpike but didn't mind a bit. Continued on through Amish country which was clean and beautiful. Fields were bright green and yellow with mustard flowers -Amish girls on bicycles -horse and buggies. Took up half the day. Picked up the PA turnpike in Adamstown - still familiar territory. Turnpike through Lancaster County was lavender with red buds just blooming. Spring disappeared in the mountains. Truck handled very well. Made up some time...
