Jul 29, 2013 - Port Clinton, OH

Days 143 - 147 of The Big Trip We've been playing tourist so fast and furiously that I think Clark and I both were willing to take a break and do little things. After getting our grandson on the plane, on the 24th, we left St. Clair, on the 25th, and drove to Port Clinton, Ohio. Driving through Detroit, we saw the same desolation we'd seen the day before and then hit the worst highway we've ever driven. Sections of Interstate 75 south, out of Detroit, have the worst potholes I've ever seen - huge holes in the cement and so many of them,...

Sep 17, 2012 - East Harbor State Park

Monday, September 17 East Harbor State Park Port Clinton, OH The weather has been pleasant here the entire weekend. We enjoyed biking around the island, as well as the state park. This is the largest state park in Ohio with over 500 camping sites. The park has not only camping but also several harbors and marinas incorporated into it giving lots of places to ride bikes and hike. There were bike lanes on the roads making it even more convenient. We also went to Marblehead Lighthouse at Lakeside that is the oldest lighthouse on the Great...

Aug 23, 2012 - Port Clinton

We headed to Port Clinton today to get a look at the Marblehead Lighthouse and to eat some of the famous Lake Erie Perch. The first stop was Marblehead State Park which is a lovely spot for everyone to sit and relax or have a family picnic. Lee climbed the tower at the lighthouse and took several shots from there. I stayed on the beach and relaxed and did a bunch of boat and people watching! Later on we headed for downtown Port Clinton. We stopped first at the Great Lakes Popcorn Company and their tasting bar where we tasted many kinds of...

Sep 27, 2011 - Egg Harbor SP and Port Clinton,Ohio

Drove to Nappanee from Chicago/Belvidere on Sunday. Initially, the weather was good but it started to rain near Nappanee. The Newmar lot (Camp Newmar) was almost totally full but we got a spot. After we parked, there was an incredible sunset even though it was pouring rain – the horizon was bright orange and clear yet we were under thick black clouds. It rained all night, was very windy and the train, with its insistent whistle passed every twenty minutes or so. Needless to say, Dixie was a wreck and so…her pacing disturbed both of us all...

Sep 16, 2011 - Erie Isles Resort

Pulled into the Erie Isles Resorts right in front of friends, Linda and Cary Fox. This is a fabulous resort...definitely the nicest one I have visited. Sits on the Portage River which is a shot distance to Lake Erie. The town of Port Clinton is a nice little town with Walmart and Krogers. Linda, Cary and I had dinner with each other every night they were here during their 4 day stay..last night went in to the Jolly Roger and had fish...walleye was deliscious. Swam in the large indoor pool, hot tubbed and enjoyed the sauna. Beautiful grounds...

Aug 3, 2011 - Lake Erie

On the night of July 31, after leaving Oshkosh, we found a beautiful, small RV park behind a motel in Indiana. On the 1st, we drove about 200 miles to Port Clinton, Ohio, where we stayed in one of our membership parks. Just before we arrived, we passed a nuclear power plant, so our grandson saw a first for him. Our campground was very close to Lake Erie. It was hot and the mosquitoes were thick. I did lots of laundry and cleaning on the 2nd and, on the 3rd, we took off to explore the shore of Lake Erie. We discovered the Marblehead...

Jun 3, 2011 - Eagles and Sightseeing

To our surprise just a 100 feet from our room was nesting pair of Eagles! We were able to walk to the back of the property, look up and see the Eagles on the nest. We would also see them fly off to go across the road to Lake Erie to fish. We never saw them fish in the lagoon. This was a surprise and special treat for us. On Wednesday we decided to drive US Highway 6 along Lake Erie to Cleveland. This highway hugs the coast line of Lake Erie. Our first stop was in Sandusky. We had lunch in Sandusky when we were here before and could tell...

Jun 3, 2011 - On Vacation

So Tuesday morning we traveled to Port Clinton, OH. On the way we dropped Alba off to be boarded for 2 days and we did our laundry, had fresh Perch at Jolly Rogers for lunch and went by the vistors center. Now we are ready to play and relax. About 3 1/2 years ago we brought the Airstream to Jackson Center, OH to have some work done on. After we left it at the factory, we decided since we had never seen any of the Great Lakes we would drive up to Lake Erie. On the way up we stopped at a vistors center to get information on the area. The...

Sep 11, 2009 - Port Clinton, OH - Erie Islands Resort

Port Clinton, Ohio was a very nice stop along our way to the east coast. The Erie Island Resort where we camped for the town nights was a very nice site. Close to Port Clinton and Lake Erie it was a great opportunity to visit the lake and see some of the local community. We also enjoyed a very good fish and chips meal while touring. I had some of the walleye which they named as their claim to fame. Port Clinton claims to be the walleye capital of the world. That was my second experience at eating walleye. I also had some in a little...
