Oct 14, 2011 - Ohio Amish Country Mt Eaton Halloween Party Day 6

Nancy and I are members of the Tri State Traveliers, a RV Club that covers Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. They hold rallies in all three states on a regular basis. Every now and then we have the final summer rally in other States. This year the Rally was held in Ohio Amish Country at the Evergreen RV Park. This park is rated Ten's in all categories by industry publications. They were right. This RV park is really really nice. Good Water, Good Power, Good Sanitation and a great place for dogs. The Dog Walk is one of the best we have...

Oct 10, 2011 - Ohio Amish Country in the Fall Day 1

Ohio Amish Country covers four different counties. Wayne, Holmes, Stark and Tuscarawas Counties is home to the largest community of Amish in the world. The roots of the Amish began in Switzerland among the Swiss Brethren in 1693 under the leadership of Jakob Amman. There are over 40,000 Amish families living in these counties with half of the families living in Holmes county In the early 18th century, the Amish began immigrating to Pennsylvania due to intense religious persecution in Europe. From 1813 to 1860, another wave of immigrants,...

Sep 16, 2011 - Day 18

Today we finished up our sightseeing in the Amish area of Ohio. Starting out on our trip, we headed towards Berlin, OH to stop at Heini's Cheese House to view the making of cheese. Our tour guide was an Amish gentleman named Atlee who grew up in this area and had a great knowledge of the cheese making process. One of the cheeses they were making this morning was a chedder. They make abour 35 different cheeses. Following the tour, we were able to sample their cheeses and purchase any that we liked. From there, we proceeded into Berlin to...

Summer 2011

Sep 14, 2011 - Day 16

Today we drove up to Akron, OH to Camping World to pick up a couple of items and hopefully a replacement door handle for our washer. Unfortunately, the one they had was for another version of our machine. On the return trip, we stopped at Shisler's Cheese shop, primarily to find out what Trail Bologna was. It is a spicy bologna made in Trail, OH. We purchased some along with some Guggisburg Baby Swiss Cheese. The weather today was sunny with temps in the 70's. Loving it.

Summer 2011

Sep 13, 2011 - Day 15

Today was a very nice day, sunny, mid-70's. The countryside is beautiful. As I wrote yeaterday, we are staying at the Evergreen RV Park in Mt Eaton, in the Amish area of Ohio. We have observed several of the Amish carriages as we traveled about. Most of the Amish farms in this area are without electrical power and use horses for most farm chores. As we set out on our sightseeing for the day, we went to "Lehman's" in Kidron, OH. Lehman's has just about everything that anyone would want except clothes or cars. We spent about 2 hours just...

Summer 2011

Sep 12, 2011 - Day 14

Today was a travel day, leaving Wright-Patterson AFB to head to eastern Ohis and the Amish area below Akron. We are now settled into our campground at Evergreen RV Park in Mt. Eaton, OH. The last few days have been very sunny and much warmer than when we were in Western VA and Frankfort, KY. When we approached Dayton, we were beginning to wonder what the big yellow orb was up in the sky, it had been several days since we did not have overcast skies and no sun. Tomorrow we will do some sightseeing in the area around Wooster and Berlin,...

Nov 6, 2009 - Behalt & Football Hall of Fame

Well, Brad decided he wanted to stay another night here in the Amish area. We will be leaving here tomorrow and going to Indianapolis for a few nights. Yesterday we went to Behalt - the Amish and Menonite Heritage Center in Berlin. We had our own private guided tour of the cyclorama a 10 ft. x 265 ft. floor to ceiling painting depicting the history of the sects. It was very interesting. We also went to a craft barn and Christmas shop. The Christmas shop was three floors of trees and decorations. It's a good thing there's not room for a lot...

Nov 4, 2009 - President McKinley Museum

Most of you know that when we travel we try to visit as many Presidential Sites that are close to our route as we can. Today we went to the President McKinley Library/Museum. It is run by the county historical commission and extremely well done. You not only learn a lot about President and Mrs. McKinley but the museum integrates their lives into the history of Canton at that time. In addition there is quite a hands on Discovery Center on the lower level that we didn't get into at all. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to turn the...

Nov 3, 2009 - Ohio Amish Area

Today was a down day. We rested from 3 days driving. In the afternoon we took a ride around the area. It's not as commercial as the PA Dutch area. Tomorrow we will go into Canton. Brad wants to go to the Football Hall of Fame. There are also some Presidential sites we'd like to see. This RV park we are in is beautiful. It has a triple 10 rating in Trialer Life. The sites are large and level. We are overlooking a horse farm. There are about 6 horses, a couple of ponies and a donkey grazing. There is an indoor pool, hot tub, exercise room,...

Apr 15, 2009 - Mt. Eaton, Ohio Update 4-15-09

Mt. Eaton, Ohio 4-15-09 Our goal was to find an Amish farm and tour it. We even hoped to get in on an Amish dinner with dessert, too. But it was not meant to be because the farm offering this package doesn’t open until……April 18th! That’s okay, because we discovered and enjoyed other wonders of this part of the country. First, we got excited seeing the Amish horse drawn buggies and Jim loved taking pictures of them. But as the day wears on their appearance became old hat. Many of the towns have hitching posts for the horses and many have...

Apr 14, 2009 - Mt. Eaton, Ohio 4-14-09

Mt. Eaton. Ohio 4-14-09 Unlike the weather in Everett, we started out our next leg of our adventure in the rain. Fortunately the wind backed off and the traffic was light making for a pleasant trip to our next campground. Rated #1 by Good Sam Club, Evergreen Park is located in the middle of Ohio’s Amish Country. In fact, tonight Sandy and I swam in the covered pool, and we relaxed in the hot tub before getting ready for bed. I discovered when I showered off after swimming that the tile floors are heated! This is one of the nicest RV parks...

Jul 2, 2008 - Moving Out- First Stop- Holmes County, Ohio

We took a side trip on our way to Michigan. We added a day to our trip and spent that day sight-seeing in the the Amish communities in and around Holmes County, Ohio. I was in charge of our day's itinerary which started with a visit to the local hardware store in Mt. Eaton which claimed to have old-fashioned items. It did, but was not unusual enough to warrant another visit. Second stop was Lehman's on the square in Kidron. That was impressive and certainly worth a return visit. It draws tourists and carries essentials for the Amish...
