Jul 5, 2013 - Travel day - Dickinson, ND to Menoken

WHILE IN DICKINSON ........ We toured the town and enjoyed a visit to the Dakota Dinosaur Museum. It was made very interesting by the creator and archaeologist/geologist, Larry League. He and his wife, Alice started this museum in 1994. Larry is a professor at the local university - he takes his students out for digs (I find that very interesting). Anyway, he joined us on our tour thru the museum and that was great. We had his undivided attention and he explained so much to both of us. Having him to answer questions, we learned more about...

2013 - Here we come

Aug 12, 2012 - State Capitol and fort Abraham lincoln

Yesterday it rained all day. It was a good soaking rain and the fields of sunflowers seemed to be enjoying it. We did go to the former governors mansion, built by a wealthy businessman in 1884 and used as the mansion from 1893 to 1960. It wss well constructed with double lath walls, but no insulation. In the carriage house we saw an old carriage and info. How quickly things changed in the early 1900's. The governors campaigned in a horse drawn carriage in 1904, in an automobile in 1907, and in an airplane in 1914. We then took the self...

Aug 10, 2012 - Dakota gasification

We are staying in the middle of nowhere, but off the interstate, east of Bismarck. The campground hosts are great and made room for us. Today we drove to Beulah to see the only plant in the US that converts coal to natural gas. The plant site is large, we saw rr tanker cars waiting to be filled, a huge ammonia tank, several tall stacks and lots of piping. We took a guided "tour" that included a video presentation on the history of the plant, then were given an explanation of the 1200 sq ft model of the plant that was built to assist the...

Summer 2012

May 20, 2012 - across the Continental Divide

Heading west through Minnesota we saw numerous signs for the Lake Woebegone Trail. A bit of research revealed that it is for biker riders who are above average. Garrison Keillor fans will understand this reference. This flat area dotted with trees looked like an easy ride. Duly noted as a possible stop on the trip back home in September. The population of the entire state of North Dakota is only 672,000 people. The state encourages full time RV'ers who need to have an official address somewhere, to select a fictitious spot here to call...

Apr 26, 2012 - Better Done Today

Mary and Kathy are off to the bingo parlor again while I'm off to the lumber yard and some hardware stores. I needed to locate some matching siding to replace some dry rot on Ajays garage, I'm also looking for a couple brackets for an idea I have for holding the door open when it's breezy out. I decided to put the bikes up on the rack ready for travel It took a little finagling to figure it out, better to do it today when it is cold and windy than tomorrow when it is supposed to be cold, windy and wet.

Apr 25, 2012 - Happy But Frustrated

Another nice day so I went into Ajays to mow the lawn because starting tonight we have rain and cold weather in the forecast for the next 4 or 5 days with highs in the 40's & 50's. If I don't get a haircut soon I'll have to start carrying a comb again. Mary came home a happy winner again as well as still frustrated at how close they came to winning the big jackpot

Apr 24, 2012 - Interesting Chat

Got up to 88F today so I got some work done around the coach cleaning and polishing the wheels as well as getting a good start at putting a coat of wax on the coach. Mary spent her day in town helping with her mom and playing bingo, they finally hit a couple of good jackpots today. I had an interesting chat with the old man that owns the RV park, their farm is right next door. His dad started farming a few hundred acres in the area during the 1920's now his three sons run the farm and they currently farm 280,000 acres, they have three new...

Apr 23, 2012 - Never Pass Up A Waffle

I never pass up a chance to have a waffle so I took advantage of the continental breakfast at the motel and started my day off with a couple. What you don't see here is houses for sale, I only seen three as I drove around town but what you do see is help wanted signs every where you go even the thrift store had a help wanted sign starting at $9.00Hr. We had a very nice lunch with my aunt Ellen and cousin Melody at out usual stop when in Minot, the China Star Buffet. Before heading back to Bismarck we stopped by Tires Plus where my brother...

Apr 22, 2012 - Trip to Minot

Beautiful clear blue skies with plenty of sunshine and best of all no wind, it got down to 31F last night so everything has a coat of frost on it but that shouldn't last long. Nice day for our 100 mile drive up hwy 83 to Minot. We had made reservations at the Hillcrest motel for $79 a night but when we got there and looked at the rooms we decided it wasn't for us especially when we seen the office it was so full of junk that the lady could have been a star on the reality show "Hoarders", we ended up at the Days Inn for $109. We were invited...

Apr 21, 2012 - The Raisins That Is

Started out with clear skies but then the wind kicked up to 30-40MPH bringing in heavy cloud cover from the northwest with a patch of blue every now and then. Not feeling too chipper lately due to a bit of a head cold or sinus problems lately so I will be staying home kicking back. A couple of observations from my walk around the RV park on a very windy day. It's amazing how much a tree line can break the wind even if they don't have any leaves yet, birds roosting in the trees face into the wind, well at least black birds do. I been on the...

Apr 20, 2012 - Into Four Figures

I'm not sure if it is a good thing or not but I think of what I would do if I were a workamper at every park we stay at. Too bad I'm not going fishing because there are worms crawling all over this morning, not big night crawlers but would still make for good bait. Mary went in early again this morning to help with taking her Mom to a couple of doctors appointments. This afternoon Myron took all of us out for lunch at Cracker Barrel, he is flying out at 6:30 tomorrow morning. Mary and Kathy finally won a decent jackpot last night, they...

Apr 19, 2012 - Tougher Than Me

Light rain most of the night and then on and off for most of the day, I don't think it got out of the forties all day. Mary went in early because Kathy had some appointments this morning. I stayed home all day working on my trip log, finally up to 2012. It is 6:30PM with a light drizzle coming down and I'm looking out the window at a guy setting up a small tent for the night and it is supposed to get down to 36F tonight, I guess they make em tough up here. There are an incredible number of black birds flying around and roosting in the trees...
