It was a day of spectacular discovery including some beautiful scenery that we have traveled five days to see. We got our first glimpse of the Badlands of North Dakota and we were not disappointed. But before we reached the Badlands we took in some other attractions. The first was New Salem Sue, a hugh Holstein cow that looks over the interstate from a hilltop outside the town of New Salem. More than 130 years ago Teddy Roosevelt traveled by train from New York for five days to reach North Dakota for a hunting expedition. He fell in love with the wide-open spaces and bought a ranch that he returned to over the next several years. His experiences in North Dakota sparked his passion for conservation and, after becoming president in 1901, he led the effort to create the national park system.
