Jul 4, 2017 - 4th of July in the Heartland

After leaving Lewistown our original plan was to take a few days to get to North Dakota however that changed when I googled activities in Dickinson where we had reservations beginning July 1st. I saw that the annual Rough Riders Days had started earlier that week but there were other activities we were interested in and one was a concert featuring a country duo we like, Big and Rich. I called the campground and they were able to accommodate our earlier arrival so I purchased tickets online for the concert and we powered through to...

Jun 13, 2017 - Theodore Roosevelt National Park

"The Days are Just Packed" We had a somewhat slow start to the day. North Dakota had some pretty severe storms yesterday. I think the weather channel reported 30 different significant hail and wind/tornado events across Wyoming, ND and Mn yesterday. Regardless, rain is my least favorite weather for driving and so even though more severe storms were forecast for later today we hung around Fargo until the rain passed around 10:00 am. 8:00pm now and so far the weather is still gorgeous. I think I mentioned that we saw swans yesterday. Today we...

Road Trip 2017

Jun 27, 2016 - Third night in Dickinson ND

So we got here Saturday night an found a nice campground. It was so windy they put us next to a large motorhome to give us a buffer from the blasts that were shaking the camper. Frank walked to the showers and came back and said...you should see how many agates are in the gravel on the roads in here. Well that got me out there quickly and sure enough, they had dumped new gravel from Montana and all the pieces were around two inches diameter but as long as 5 inches. So we found many and filled 2 large ziplock bags, and went to bed. the wind...

Sep 17, 2014 - Into North Dakota

For the first time in several months we have returned to the interstate highway system. Our drive today from Miles City to Dickinson, ND was all on I-94. I expected that we would be on mostly flat terrain, but was surprised by what we saw. I-94 followed the path of the Yellowstone River as did the BNSF Railroad. The landscape continued to be rolling hills punctuated by geologic domes. When we reached the North Dakota border we entered the Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the National Grasslands that run between the two sections of that...

Aug 31, 2014 - Dickenson, ND Day 1 and 2

Yesterday was a drive day. The weather was very overcast and we only saw a few glimpses of sunshine. Another storm is coming our way from the west and we expect thunderstorms and lightning this evening. We will be staying in Dickinson because our first choice of Midora had full campgrounds. North Dakota has excellent highways and very little traffic. It was a very easy drive. On our route we stopped in Bismarck, the state capital of North Dakota which is known as the Peace Garden State. It became a state on 11/2/1889. The current Capitol...

Jun 16, 2014 - North Dakota Bound

On our way to North Dakota, we passed through Belle Fourche, SD - the geographical center of the nation. We thought when we visited Smith Center, KS that the center was there. Obviously it has been moved. In North Dakota there is a 30 mile stretch of highway called The Enchanted Highway. Along this road are giant metal sculptures. Something different.

Our Dakotas Trip

Jul 3, 2013 - Travel day - Miles City, MT to Dickinson, ND

We woke up to a sad sound today - after paying $250.00 for the coach to be cleaned in Billings, this park sprinklers came on and watered our nice clean coach (after they had told us they would by-pass the section we were in). The day started out ok but 100 miles from our stop the winds picked up and blew and blew. We had never been in North Dakota and we were amazed at the beauty. Well actually we have not been disappointed in the views this whole trip. God had given us a beautiful country. One of our rest stops today was about 30-40 miles...

Jul 23, 2012 - Grand Forks & Minot AFB, Dickinson & Medora, ND

The next leg of our trip was to Grand Forks AFB and Minot AFB, North Dakota, with a stop in Bismarck, North Dakota to visit the Mormon Temple. Your history lesson for these bases: Grand Forks Air Force Base was established on 1 December 1955 and was occupied for use on January 28, 1957. It was named after the neighboring city of Grand Forks, North Dakota. On September 1, 1958, Strategic Air Command established the 4133d Strategic Wing at Grand Forks AFB, North Dakota as part of SAC's plan to disperse its B-52 Stratofortress heavy bombers...
