Jul 23, 2012 - Grand Forks & Minot AFB, Dickinson & Medora, ND

The next leg of our trip was to Grand Forks AFB and Minot AFB, North Dakota, with a stop in Bismarck, North Dakota to visit the Mormon Temple. Your history lesson for these bases: Grand Forks Air Force Base was established on 1 December 1955 and was occupied for use on January 28, 1957. It was named after the neighboring city of Grand Forks, North Dakota. On September 1, 1958, Strategic Air Command established the 4133d Strategic Wing at Grand Forks AFB, North Dakota as part of SAC's plan to disperse its B-52 Stratofortress heavy bombers...

Day 4 AM, 55 Degrees and Drizzly. Traveled from Bismarck North Dakota to Dickinson, North Dakota 8:40 AM to 4:40 PM, 8 hour day Stayed at North Park Campground OK, we're definitely not in the right place weather wise! 90s in Columbus, 70s in Alaska, and 40s and 50s here the last 2 days in North Dakota with rain and gloom! Thankfully we have had uneventful days so far, and not all of our trips have started off that way. We used to do very long days when our time was limited, because we never wanted to give up time where we were going to...

May 23, 2012 - Day Two-Asbury Minn to Dickinson N.D.

Day Two: Low temp 63, high temp 79. We logged 368 miles today. Weather was overcast to start and ended up partly cloudy. We had the wind right in our faces today and only got 8.1 mpg, but the gas was only $3.49, I hope it stays low! We survived last night!! A huge storm rolled in overnight and the wind was just howling! It really felt like we were sleeping in a boat instead of a motor home. We were really rocking and there were several large trees in the area. Luckily, they were all standing yet in the morning. In the past, with most of our...

Aug 6, 2011 - Day #2 @ Camp on the Heart RV Park

Take I 94 West to the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt NP. Heavy rain on the way but clears to a nice day 75 degrees. Enter at Painted Canyon Visitor Center, Overlook of the upper margin of the badlands and a panorama of the topography is colorful---maybe later, it's misting and overcast. On to 2nd entrance off I 94, Medora. We take the 36 mile Scenic Loop Drive, stop at some overlooks and walk the Coal Vein Trail. The trail took us thru an area noted for a fire that burned from 1951-77 in a coal vein. This is pretty common in the...

Aug 5, 2011 - Camp on the Heart RV Park, Dickinson, ND

Awake to sunshine on a field of partially blooming sunflowers. For some reason can't get a picture in focus, but it's in my mind. Stop in Bismark @ an automotive supply store for not much to fix the RV. Walmart however, comes thru, including a lightweight step ladder. We certainly didn't plan on carrying that for the trip. It gets stowed in the Saturn. I. 94 “The Enchanted Highway” as this section is called has enormous metal sculptures along the way (black and white cow on a hill, a flock of geese) Severe storms are predicted for today....

When it's springtime in North Dakota, And the gentle breezes blow About seventy miles an hour And it's fifty-two below. You can tell you're in North Dakota 'Cause the snow's up to your butt. And you take a breath of springtime air And your nose holes both freeze shut. The weather here is wonderful, So I guess I'll hang around. I could never leave North Dakota. My feet are frozen to the ground! I just loved this poem when I saw it on the web site for the campground. Glad we're here in the summer! Dickinson, North Dakota turned out to be a...

Left Ten Sleep at 8:40AM. Took Rt 16(E) which goes up through Big Horn National Forest. I love this place. If you are ever in WY, this is a must see. In Buffalo,WY got gas: $50 for 14.5 gal @ $3.439. then jumped on I90(E) through Sundance to Spearfish,SD. There we took Rt 85(N). This road is about as straight as you can get for over 100 miles. Along the way we crossed over White Butte (the "highest" point in ND) at only 3,506 feet. Thus as you can see ND is FLAT. In Belfield,ND we took I64(E) to North Park Campground in Dickinson,ND....

Jul 11, 2011 - North Dakota-Teddy Roosevelt Natl Park

Hi all-it's been a while since I added an entry. It's not easy to find good wifi. So I am writing this a week after we visited. I think I can remember the big stuff. We went to Theodore Roosevelt National Park today. It was pretty overcast and we drove thru occasional rain drops, but that meant it was cooler and no sunburn. The sun came out briefly in the afternoon-but not much and not for long. We visited the South Unit and started off at the Painted Canyon visitor center. There is no charge for this stop-it's like a highway rest stop with...

Jul 10, 2011 - Home!

Up early for a head start on the road home. Stopped in Livingstone MT for a truck stop breakfast and then back in the truck for more miles and more miles. A quick stop in Miles City and then we could finally see the ND border! A great site for all. The Badlands looked so good, in part because they are so green with all the moisture and in part because we were only 33 miles from home! Lori came up and surprised the kids to take them home as the kids didn't think they were going back for a couple more days. Bruizer was sooo excited to see...
