Jun 2, 2014 - Moving Northward

Mon., June 2nd – Leaving Minneapolis/St. Paul at rush hour was not the best plan, but we managed to endure the heavy traffic. Our trip through North Dakota took us to Fargo, Grand Forks, and you guessed it – another Walmart parking lot in Devil’s Lake where we spent the night.

May 5, 2014 - The Geographic Center of North America

The Fit started without a jump this morning for some reason and the sun came out again as we drove out of Boomtown USA so we were off to a good start. Williston is the epicenter of all of the oil and gas activities in the Bakken shale region. Since we passed through this area in 2009 on “Vince and Sue’s Excellent Adventure”, it has grown considerably and it appears that there is a lot of the oil and gas production infrastructure is in place with much more in progress. Exploration wells are still seen along US 2 so the end of development...

Jul 26, 2013 - Devil's Lake ND

Well, we’re not screaming. Things actually went pretty well this morning. The package that FedEx said would be delivered at 4:30 was actually dropped off in the office at about 10:30 and the latest jack problem was solved after a phone call to the manufacturer at about the same time. Suhweet. Since we had both things taken care of early enough we settled up with the office and hit the road just before noon under nasty looking skies, but the only rain was done by about 10:00. The trip west on US 2 was uneventful most of the way except for a...

Wouldn't you know it we have had such beautiful weather and driving conditions and we get closer to home and it changes. It was snowing and blowing when we left the hotel but even though it was drifting across the highway it didn't seem icy. It was 12 f when we got up but they must salt the highway because it was slushy. We stopped at Fargo for dinner and when we were between there and Grand Forks seen our first wreck. It was on the other side of the divided highway, It looked like a semi must have side swiped a van because the van was...

Jul 16, 2011 - Poo Coffee Anyone?

This morning we woke up to the sound of the smoke alarm screeching, best I can figure is that it went off due to the high humidity. To help defray the cost of the reunion everyone brought something to be sold at a silent auction. Between the auction and donations over $2,000 was raised, it was later decided to give the proceeds to Tom & Melody because their house was in the flood in Minot. My cousin Dale is a missionary who travels the world converting Muslims to Christianity, his donation to the silent auction was Kopi Luwak, aka Kopi Luak...

Jul 15, 2011 - I Can't Believe I Was That Foolish

After breakfast we left for Devils Lake to meet up with more of the family coming in from Minot at Roosevelt Park for an impromptu lunch. After lunch we all caravanned out to the Lakewood Park Bible Camp where we will be having our family reunion. Due to all the flooding we had to use a built up levee road to get to the camp, I can't believe I was foolish enough to take our coach down that road, fortunately we made it in ok. Walked down to the lake to do a little fishing with Shane, we managed to catch a few small walleyes in a short amount...

Aug 29, 2010 - Spirit Lake II

The day started at about 68 degrees and with a heavy rainstorm - maybe we could contract to drought-stricken areas and make a living trailing rain behind us. It got hot later in the day. We took care of chores, updated this journal, and after lunch visited the casino again. Marcia had a modest win to put us ahead by enough to play again at the next venue. It was a relaxing evening and we scoped out the next couple of days of travel. (This is a RV park we will keep in mind and have already recommended to others. Fishing and boating are...

Aug 28, 2010 - Spirit Lake

After we packed up in the rain, the sun came out. We stopped at the visitor center for a postcard and headed out on 85 > 23 > 8 > 2. We got an air filter warning on the truck – hardly surprising after two runs on the Alcan – and stopped at a NAPA for a new element, the Ford dealer being closed 15 minutes before our arrival. Rugby, North Dakota’s claim to fame is that it is the geographical center of North America. We decided to stop in Devil’s Lake, ND. The Spirit Lake Casino and Resort RV Park is beautiful. Our site is full hookup, has...

Jun 21, 2010 - Summer 2010/To Alaska - Travel (Devils Lake, ND)

This is another of the dreaded travel days today. We drove from the shore of Lake Superior, across part of Wisconsin, across all of Minnesota and well into North Dakota. As is our custom on travel days, we got going before breakfast but stopped at a McDonalds around 9:30 AM for breakfast. Lunch is in the motor home at a rest area. For the night, we found a Wal-Mart in Devils Lake, ND. Gary has discovered something new for breakfast at McDonalds – Carmel frappes. They are as close to coffee as he can stand but Marty says they are too sweet!...

May 31, 2010 - To Devils Lake, ND

Happy Memorial Day! We are on the road again. It has been a great four days at Cass Lake but North Dakota is calling us. Our goal for the day is Turtle River State Park, which is just past Grand Forks, ND. We make three stops. One stop is at a rest area, one at Wal-Mart and one at Cabela’s. Unbelievably, it is still early in the day and goals can be changed. We head to Devil’s Lake. The weather is good and we have a straight road in front of us. We see some deer and some hawks. Sorry, no picture taking. We stop in Lakota. We think we will...

Jul 5, 2009 - Farewell to all

After breakfast we had our own church service, Dale was the M/C, Uncle Earl recited a tongue twisting Prodigal Son proverb, then played harmonica for us. Jim & Janet's daughter Holley recited a poem she wrote for them. Gene & Eileen's girls presented them with a scrapbook. All the little kids sang a few songs. Dale & Judy's son Chad gave the service then took up a collection for the church he is trying to get started in Cincinnati. By 3:00 most everybody had left.

Jul 4, 2009 - Enjoyable 4TH

We get 3 meals a day, breakfast is $3.50, lunch & dinner is $5.50 ea. Finally played my first game of washers, did ok. Another night at the campfire, of course there were stories of Louie Huwey, Hector Hagen & others from our childhood, more smores & a little singing. Stan's girlfriend Jen brought her Walleye she caught down to the fire wrapped in foil, we threw it in the fire, tasted great. Mary didn't come down to the fire tonite because the smoke bothers her asthma, I got back to the coach shortly after midnite. I couldn't believe the...
